  I just recently came back for a "temporary" trip on Narfell with a completely new character. Frankly, I have been away for so long that I have forgotten much of the things that were. Reading your post brought back lots of memories, especially from the names, they truly were part of my Narfell, long time ago! Thanks for a great recalling of past tales. They are the one that makes the fire feel so magical, when listening to them drinking a cup of tea, passing trough those long and cold night of Hammer.

  Aww now why did you go and do that now i have to find my box of tissues. Of all the things this place is it is the people that make is special. Maybe I am vain and just want to think that I've had a part in what makes this place/game special. I really believe though that there have been more friendships and relationships spawns here that will bridge time and distance. I don't think i'm alone in saying that many here will be my friend for years to come and I hope to keep in touch with them even after the server is shut off. T

  Villains One of Meril's first friends (that actually survived for more than a month) was Lolita C Clearbrook. She was a halfling cleric, played by Riverthorn. Meril and her would spend lazy afternoons chatting by the well, lounging on the grass, sharing stories and jokes and gossip. Sometimes they would even get RP xp! This was a whole new thing that had just started up. But even in town, they were not really safe. Norwick was horribly unsafe, in fact. I distinctly remember Norwick having a slow steady trickle of drow. I'm not talking scary DM drow with ten fighter levels. I'm talking about level 1 min-maxed drow with names like 'Drizzle'. They'd log in, buy some kit, port to the Boar's Head and find a nice juicy target. Bards, for instance, were nice juicy targets. And there was only one bard online most of the time. And that would be me. Min-maxed half-orcs were also a common theme. Even at level 5+ you had to watch out for these things. A crit from a scythe - even from a level 1 - could kill you if that level 1 had 20 strength. If someone did this today, you wouldn't be too worried. They couldn't really do any more harm than subdue you. A DM would quickly teach them the rules or boot and ban them. But there was no subdual back then. So they were a real threat. I confess, I did enjoy how they livened things up. One minute you'd be sat chatting with a halfling cleric, the next thing there would a drow shooting at you or a half-orc charging toward you, axe drawn. The number of these attacks was one of the reasons for the 'no weapons out' law in Norwick. But these people were nothing compared to PC-villains. To be fair, they generally tried to avoid killing people unless it was needed. But there was no PK permission required back then, and things tended to get ugly quick. There were only two real villains I frequently encountered. One was Navere. She was an elven vampire who lived in the crypts. She would sometimes come up to Norwick and make grand threats about how she'd destroy the place. One time she did this, I was sat with Lolita, just generally chatting. The halfling decided she wouldn't stand for this, got out her holy symbol, and ran up to the big elven vampire cleric. She called down Avoreen to smite her foe, and turned undead! It didn't work, of course. Navare laughed and cast Hammer of Gods. I don't think it killed Lolita, but had I not frantically clicked to get Meril out of the area effect, the damage would have more than finished off my bard. It was a good tale, though, when spiced up a bit. A nice quick one, for when I wanted coin in a hurry. The other major villain was Vinessa. She'd generally keep to herself, but sometimes she'd wander around Norwick invisible. Some low level who knew just enough to get in trouble, but not enough to avoid being stupid, would recognise the floaty name. "VINESSA IN TOWN!" would go out on the shout channel or (when that was removed) quickly spread around town. A mob would form, lacking only pitchforks and flaming torches. Inevitably, Vinessa would retreat to the crypts. As if scripted, the mob would follow. A few fireballs later, about half the mob would walk out, burned, singed and carrying the other half. I'm proud to say I never chased Vinessa around and got fireballed for my trouble. In fact, the only time I did get fireballed by Vinessa, Raz had forgotten to turn subdual off and I clawed my way to safety! But thats's another story too. Ah, yes. Ways to die. There were a couple of other major ways to die. The first was the goblin elite. There was generally no way to avoid running into this bugger at some point in your career. When I realised sleep spells worked, I would generally be able to take him out 3/4 of the time without loss. But sometimes spells didn't work, and you'd be forced to scarper. Some poor sod (as often me as anyone else) would end up sprinting round and round and round that lake, elite hot on your heels. You'd just have to hope your friends were still alive and smart enough to get help. Or, if you wanted to be chancey, you could try and run into Norwick (it helped if the gates were open) and let the guards take it out. But that tended to be a bad idea; most of the NPCs in Norwick had area effect spells. The number of people that died because of Friar Fred being a bit too liberal with his Hammer of Gods when a goblin elite chased a poor sod into town… The last major way to die was the bugbear archers. A single transition (accidentally, in my case) and you find yourself in a strange new screen. The forest is different. Prettier. What is not so pretty are the poisoned bugbear arrows, which deal Con damage. Thankfully, the high level that had offered to show me around (Mitsu, I think it was) dragged my sorry corpse back to the Friar and my gold covered by raise. That was Meril's first death. Fun times!

  Genzir joined the legion pretty early on. I was just then hitting level 5 and realizing the extreme difficulty of finding wizard spells for a non-Spellweaver-member. I asked for suggestions for spells to pick, and they said hold and haste, luckily Genzir is very enchantment-focused so hold was a good fit, so I took that and fireball. So much of Genzir's early days were spent following higher-level legion parties (Lyte was around 8 or 9 at the time), mostly sitting in the back taking potshots with the crossbow, throwing daze spells at enemy archers, and waiting for an orc destroyer so I could throw one of my two hold spells. People are usually pretty grateful when you do this, because nobody wants to melee an orc destroyer. At this time your average Legion party was all these half-orcs, and Lyte, but I tended to be with Lyte, who was leading a lot of lower-level patrols. Genzir was the only (active?) mage in the Legion at that time, so add that to being much lower-level than most of the tanks and it makes things pretty interesting. Genzir also got to run a few laps around Jiyyd, that was part of the Legion experience back then. Genzir had his little moment of glory one day when he followed that big crew to the orc fortress. That was an epic battle like I haven't seen before or since. We were in multiple groups of 10+, just about every high-level PC that I know on Narfell is there. I'm with the archers. When we finally make it into the fortress, I'm stuck on this hill with the other archers. Problem is my spells are too short-range to do much from that distance, so I'm taking potshots with the crossbow again. Then there is one NPC, Orc Priest, played by LowerDenizen (who had not yet become a DM), running around throwing all his tough cleric spells at us. So I position myself on a ledge and he comes into view and starts casting. I might have run, but I decide to try and blind him anyway, and he fails his save…............ right before a blade barrier goes up under my feet. Truth is, even if I had died, I wouldn't have regretted my little stand. A level 4 wizard doesn't get a whole lot of opportunities like that. But somebody ran over and healed me right away and I lived (ICly; OOCly when you get back up you take damage again, but this is considered a bug and so I was spared the XP loss). We carried a lot of dead bodies and gear back after that attack.

  @fb22b18476=Nilla: 1000 gold for a raise was a mystical thing, and I remember being slightly jealous when someone -actually- paid to get little miss Penny Lane raised. Seriously? Who the hell would've paid to get her back? :lol: I have a notoriously terrible memory, but I know that hasn't happened often over the years. On the contrary, lil Miss Lane would probably rival the Peltarch treasury (which she did, in fact, think she could rob at one time, naive though that might've been - nudges Flom) if she didn't die so damn much. Between Gobble's Malachai and LD's Sy'wyn, they must've accounted for a dozen of her raises by themselves. And yes, I too miss the days when bards played music by the fire everyday and got tipped. I'm not sure when or where the culture shifted to end that.

  Peram Muddeynarrows Peram was a hin cleric of Mystra, and not only that, but he shared the first name of every single hin that logged into Narfell it seemed. If only I had known that the name Peram was so popular….I'd have chosen Pedro. A little background on Peram will help set the stage for a few memories concerning the hin with a great heart and a desire to be a mage. Peram was a follower of Mystra, whom he called another name that I can't recall right now, but it did take people quite a while to catch on. I think only those who got close enough to him realized what was going on with this over excited, and ambitious halfling. Peram desired above all else to be a mage, but had the intelligence of your average joe. Nothing was special about him really or would have been if it weren't for his prayers to the goddess of magic to one day make him a mage. Instead of flowing robes and the stench of bat dung and sulfur she gifted him in other ways. He never fully understood what was going on with him for quite some time and with the help of a few friends he saw that he didn't need to be a mage, and that he was something different altogether. I remember one day sitting by the south fire, and peram was making himself busy telling everyone on how he was going to be shooting fire from his fingertips and calling down birds of acid on the goblins. This coming from a hin wearing chainmail and sporting a mace. You see Peram was not smart, but he wasn't dumb enough to walk into the forest with no protection hoping the he could do magic. He fully realized that if he couldn't, but that did not stop the desire from being there. It wasn't long until Peram had made new friends. Actually two players who knew my other PC that preceded Peram, Darya Frost and Alijah Arkweld. Still two players and characters that I will likely never forget. The times I had alongside these two were great. Over time Peram had shared story after story of how he wanted to be a mage and people had to have grown tired of me typing out prayer after prayer to Mystra asking for simple little things like a fireball to shoot from his fingertips... The Lady was what he called her. And listen she did. Eventually Peram was gifted with the spell mage armor, and little did he know it was his prayers being answered in the form of divine magic and not his ability to manipulate the Weave as does a mage. But every time he went to cast that did not stop him from waving his hands around, chanting a few words he had heard other mages say, and bringing forth this spell of protection. Every single time he thought that Mystra had let him learn a spell...a real spell. And he was quite possibly the happiest hin in the North. Peram had grown in level and cofidence with his newfound abilities. He wasn't real sure of how he healed people and he just thought it was some ... new, powerful, form of magic that he had unlocked. He knew he could cast while wearing armor and that alone confused him even more. The fact that sometimes he forgot the words he said to cast Mage Armor and often substituted other words that ... well worked just as good never really made him think that... he wasn't a mage. It was this realization about the armor that led him to start crafting and eventually he ran into a legend even at that time in the game. A young Krig Skullboil had recently gained the ability to manipulate Silver and it was the talk of Narfell. Everyone knew he was an armorer and Peram sought him out looking for this amazing material. He sat outside the crafter's hall waiting for a very long time, he could have waited inside just as well, but there were more people walking by that he could see. And finally Krig came grunting along to the smithy, loaded down with ore. Peram's eyes grew large. After some quick chatting with Krig, letting him know he's a crafter too, and he wanted some of this amazing armor that he could make. Krig quoted him a price of four thousand gold, 6500 if it was made very well and master quality. Peram nodded and thus began the quickest accumilation of gold I have ever seen. You should have taken Peram's mace away and given him a shovel and a hoe. It was time to farm goblins and it wasn't long before that 6500 was acquired. Peram returned to Krig, days, yes only days later. He had a bundle of gold stashed away already, but I know I farmed like no one had likely done before me those few days. Peram made his way back to Krig, hands shaking as he showed him his treasure. Krig told him that he even had the ingots for one try. Which in all likelyhood he had more than enough for several tries. Good ol' Kuker. Peram watched as the 2.3 seconds ticked by while the armor was made and handed, somewhat uncerimonously to him. Peram tossed his gold to him and ran off to try on what would be called from that day forth....his Hin Tin. I recall that for a moment there....for a brief moment when Peram came out wearing his new shiney armor and him celebrating in front of the others that everyone stopped. Everyone turned to regard this overjoyed hin for a brief moment....before going back to their conversations. Peram was annoying more often than likeable at times and he didn't know many others besides his small circle of friends, whom he rushed off to find...

  "It's never as good as the first time", is what they say, but to me my true feeling of "clicking" with Narfell came when I rolled up Shyrae. I vowed that one death would be final for her, and as such I made her a dark-skinned ex-slave (original, I know) girl from Anauroch, taught the lore of the wilderness and given the sadness in her past, a devout follower of Kelemvor. (I know Kelemvor technically can't have rangers but I wasn't so sure at the time). I wanted her to be surviveable in combat from first level, so I chose powergaming stats for her and planned to make her the best archers a human could be. Little did I know that if I wanted surviveability I should have chosen a cleric, but at that time I thought high starting HP (13 with 16 con) and powerful archery skills (16 dex) plus some skill at playing the game would see me through. Back in the day regular Eastlanders and their cutpurses would give XP right up to hitting level 9. So that's what I did. I did RP a lot, but most of my off-time, when 5 people were on (out of about 40-50 in the start of 2003) I spent hunting. I played 18 hours a day, so obviously I levelled quite fast. Took me only 3 months to reach level 9 (and I didn't play nights, so saw little in the way of Quest or RP xp). Aside of hunting, Shyrae went through an amazing "life", changing from the very moody and depressed ex-slave girl to a powerful, strong and self-sufficient woman. She became loved and respected as a ranger/fighter in the Wolves of Narfell and honorary member of the Druid's Circle. back then she was still Lawful Neutral, and at times harshly so, uncaring of her friends when they broke the rules of her community (firmly voting out Rodi after he started kegging the forest with Bruno, for example). Through the years, and through her romantic relationship (in it's own odd way) with Zoma Nogardis, right up until the day he left her to die in his homeland (traitor!) she learned gentleness and later she learned to explore fierce passion in the hunt (and in love) with Honsa Aylomen-Wang. That man became the father of her child, Gaedyn Aeron-Wang (who I rolled up as a PC but never played much). In 3 months time she made (despite her attitude at times) a lot of great friends: Her girly friends Linah Lossel and Yhesail Dhelros. The drunk evening in Norwick remains as an all time High/Low. RedJack Rogers, Zoma Nogardis, Honsa Aylomen-Wang and Marcus Endur, for being men that impressed her (and that she was attracted to). Some of the druid circle and most oldschool Wolves: Orock -Hunter-, Fade foxfire, Adlanail, Alandar Ironclaw (the very first Raider Bow), Big Six Mathewson, Grivel Rasheren, Lo'en Jaspenellar, Ravish Blackbow, Equinox Stargazer (never got her :P), Nebril, and yes, even Ashen Lockeheart (who she never forgave for ruining her position as the only human in the Wolves). Meril and Velaria, who were (together with Adlanail) the best bards she's ever known. Vino Sten (for being an uptight but nice guy altogether). Wynn Saal (for being weird). Darrs' Blink, the amazing cleric whose god I still don't know. He used to invoke a different god or goddess every day, and I made a point of rolling an Int check every time with Shyrae to see whether she noticed or not. I rolled abysmally low ever time and she never figured out. Thanks Zro for your amazing characters (yes, I liked Friar Kent, in his purple plate, as well)! Glory moments that stick: The nights of deep talking on the hill in Jiyyd with Big Six, who was often visited by the shade of his lost love. Moving. The surgery performed on her by Kia (terrifying courtesy of Kute DM) after she was stabbed by an Eastlander poison blade while pregnant of her son. Her birth, which I actually RPed. It felt amazingly weird. Thanks to Rith (Emerwyn) and of course Magi13 (R.I.P.) for being the DM to oversee it. Rith even got to trash an extra copy of the child after the server crashed mid-event. The first time she got 1000 xp (by Andelas) by solving a (frankly very easy riddle) while the rest of the people on the server couldn't. Of course I knew the answer, but Shyrae with her 8 int might not know it. I had probably the only good Int check of her existence that time, and got duely rewarded for it. After all, I only played her for about 3 months, yet she was one of the profound and even emotional RP experiences I have ever had. I think in many ways she was a logical reflection of my own state of mind at that time. I was not in a happy place, but the 3 months of playing her got me through my troubles, in a way. After her I rolled up Anakore, and perhaps he was a relfection of my later state of mind, but that's a story for another time. After 3 months her story was finished, her evolution from a broken girl to a mended and secure woman complete. Thanks for all involved.

  Do What ? Reading Dirtma's (DornMcneil) thread reminded me of one of Ad's first encounters with half-orcs and the eastern rawlins. There were few people around the south fire and Ad waited for a sight of a familiar face. He rarely went hunting with folks he didn't know…without first questioning them on their methods. Anyway Vrugar (Hrugred?) appreared and asked if anyone was going out to the woods. Ad recognised the half orc as a one-time companion of Karion Silverbow, an elf Ad knew well and respected. So, taking that as recommendation, Ad took up the offer to head south. A quick lap round the goblin lake showed that there were a few folks in Ad's favourite spot. A low stone that provided a platform the goblins had to run round and mount from the rear - giving ample firing time for a low-level (Ad was 2nd level) to get in a couple of shots (3 if you had point blank-and he had !). As it was so crowded Vrugar suggested they head East. Not having been east before I was reluctant but Vrugar was around 5th level and a fighter so he promised he'd keep the goblins off me as I took pot-shots. And so it was agreed. We transitioned into the east rawlins and I scrolled around taking in the sights. So much so that I lost track of Vrugar on my screen. The mini-map indicated the he was headed for the first clump of trees eastward and I set off in pursuit. As it turned out I went southwards round the clump and Vrugar went northwards..but it was a relatively small clump...no biggie, or so I thought. At that I see a basher zeroing in on me from the south..now 12 Hp isn't a lot but I figure with large shield and sword I can hold him off so I change weapons...only to see a second basher on his tail from the southwest. That puts a fight out of the question and I take to my heels...northeast (clockwise) round the clump to lead them to Vrugar. ....Only... Vrugar has seen me go south round the clump and is backtracking southwest (again clockwise) round the clump. As I run I spot a shortie eastward start to zero in on me (they didn't have the coward AI till much later) but my clockwise path now leads me north round the clump. Of course north of the clump is another basher and shortie...and who do they spot zooming past ? Meanwhile Vrugar's figured out were both heading clockwise and has backtracked again to intercept me but he's south of the clump now...and I'm north. I've also picked up another couple of goblins from somewhere but finally I can head westward to the transition. Ahead of me I spot Vrugar and frantically type "RUN" as more goblins charge from the north. It was like a scene from the Keystone cops as Vrugar the beefy fighter turned and fled as Ad passed him with a trail of about 8-10 goblins. We made the transition and prayed that we'd get through without any combat...and we were lucky. After stopping Vrugar types " What you do that For?" "Do What?" was all Ad replied as I was laughing so much. In the end we rounded up some of the meatier fighters and braved the transition to slaughter the goblins before they could ambush some unwary player at the transition...but it was a long time before Ad braved the eastern rawlins again.
