Told from the Rant Stand

  • Hammerhand mutters "Magic. Why is it always magic.".

  • Yana’s eyes get rather wide at the announcement, and when realization soon hits her regarding the consequences and what it means to the ill prepared guards, she looks ill

By the gods Ronan, what were you thinking?

  • Daveth looks to Ronan, then looks to Benji, then looks to Ronan, then looks to Benji, then his mouth gapes open as he notices all the guards and defenders unprepared for the riots.

"…Did no one tell the Legion, Defenders or Norwick anything before this announcement?"

For once he seems genuinely shocked.

  • Legion

Benji looks up from suit shopping.

    "Notable individuals like who?"

  • Ronan takes the rant stand, making sure a considerable crowd is gathered first before he begins to speak. Oddly enough, it's not another protest about Oscura.

    Citizens of the jewel,

I come before you today to give warning. Peltarch has been experiencing supernatural events concerning the N'jast war. Many of you may have heard about this, or even witnessed it yourselves when armatures came trampling the commons. These events are very dangerous, and I fear they will not be letting up anytime soon.

With the help of a few friends, and my attunement to the weave, I have sensed that there is a rise in chaotic magics, surrounding all of Peltarch. It has not stopped, and it will soon reach its maximum. What happens then? I'm not completely sure, but it will not be good. Peltarch is in danger.

But it's not too late. You've a few days to decide whether or not to evacuate to a safer haven. Either in Norwick, or Hoarsgate across the icelace, wherever you feel safest. In a few days time, Peltarch will be a very unsafe place when the chaotic magics reaches its maximum. Many notable individuals are working on the situation, as I stand here and speak.. and I will, of course, personally help in any way I can.

When Peltarch is more safe again, I will again take the stand and announce it.

Good luck to all of you..

  • Smush nods happily

"I name Brutus Smushface, I be happy for speaks to you about da Lord of de Deads."

sits down, the chair lets out a loud creak in protest, the chair slightly bends under his weight

  • ::Mariston looks to the half-orc::
Thou art a paladin of Kelemvor, how wonderful. Thou really shouldst seek me at the Temple, I wouldst speak with on matters that Kelemvors faithful are best suited to answer. Excellent news.
::Mariston smiles warmly to the half-orc::

  • a huge half orc with filed-down fangs and a long, flowing, golden cloak stands up slowly and clumsily

_"Smush nut think dat mustache man be doing wrongs, he just saying dat de laws are nut clears, I agree wiv dat 'cus I nut know many da laws and it hard to follow dem if nut know.

Hard to be paladins for Kelemvors if always get in truble for thing dat I nut know wus bads in da town. Nut make fun for Davids."_

  • "Boo!" Hammer begins exclaiming towards Daveth, seeming to take quite some amusement in the whole discussion. In all likelihood, he never took it very seriously to begin with.

  • ::The charismatic knight looks at Daveth, those around him feeling bolstered by his presence, with a deep sigh he takes the stand to repudiate the previous statement::

You seem to change to direction as often as the wind changes on the Icelace. You clearly hath issues with being banned from the Temple and the very fact thou do not know the aid given to the city by the followers of said gods is astounding. I do not just mean the priests and the Order, the very people of this city, who worship in that holy place. Who hath strived all these days to make the city a better, fairer place to live for all.
Frankly it appears you are without any sense, your lack of honour, respect and duty sees you standing here, berating those thou claim to defend.
Nothing more than a tantrum, like that of a spoilt child. There are consequences to our actions, a fact thou hath learned and take badly so seek to vilify the people of this city and their devotion to their gods. I find that in poor taste, to demean Lady Daisy, Priest Galin and all those within the Temple who hath done so much for Peltarch is to not know this city at all.
Again I ask what hath thou ever done for this city? Do not claim any moral authority unless thou can provide some example by which to follow. Twouldst appear thou hath done nothing, save seek to insult the people of this city.

As to Senator Redralen’s statement I do fully agree with this.

::With that Mariston steps down from the stand and speaks with those in the crowd if there are any 🙂 ::

  • _"To be fair, they constantly heal people and even bring them back from the dead. Making potions isn't cheap or easy either. 'sides.. nobody forces you to buy from them. All this talking is pointless. If you can do better, start your own town.

    You could call it Whinertown."_

  • @1f36e8a945=Archon_Prime:

_Hammer comments. "Does -anyone- understand these laws? Or do they just make up whatever meaning they want when it suits them?

    Pssh. Laws."_

"Ah, and my point is made clear right there. You don't tell us the laws, how are we to know them? Every time I confront you, you change the laws. Notice none of them take any care in commenting on the legalized torture. Now what? He calls me a liar because they don't even tell us what the laws are. If you think for one second I even care about being banned from your precious temple, I don't! Go on, dance around in circles in your temple and sing about how great laws are, or whatever it is you do. So what if you helped save Peltarch? No use saving it then leaving it to rot from the inside out. The fact that they never do anything until doom is impending, or until someone points it out is clear evidence that they're a bunch of chumps! Yes, indeed! Then what, oh you proposed a law to change the gold from ten to five? How gracious of you. Lets just sweep the poor out of the city and leave them to rot at the gates, shall we? The only thing temples are good for is spending all the thousands of gold they make in donations on fancy robes and funny little hats."

    He pauses

"What have I done? I've pointed out what you haven't. He lists off wars like he was leading every fight. You can bet your sweet arse a hundred times more Defenders gave up their lives than these supposed "holy people", and they probably did it without asking for donations, without trying to convert people and without bragging about how great they are."

  • Ronan lifts a hand..

This isn't about Daveth's rantings anyway, or the Temple of the Triad. I wish not to get off track here and not humor the man that laughs when people die.

I came to point out the murderous acts of our neighbors, and some people -still- seem to think Oscura isn't as bad a place as it is rumored. That action they took right there is proof, and if that does not sway the minds of even the people that are most in denial about Oscura, then I have absolutely no idea what will.

  • _Hammer comments. "Does -anyone- understand these laws? Or do they just make up whatever meaning they want when it suits them?

    Pssh. Laws."_

  • ::Mariston takes the stand::
Sadly some of the laws on the available posters have not been updated to represent Senate decisions made in the past(an ooc oversight in redoing areas I guess). The Vagrancy law was altered a I recall some decades ago.

The following laws were altered or put before the senate by myself some (2 RL years ago..however long that is in game time)

::Maristin reads from a book of records::
    @cdbacc5bf2:

I propose to remove some of the more outdated and draconian laws

The following laws to be struck from the books or altered

2.19: It is illegal to mispronounce Peltarch while in Peltarch
-Recommended Sentence: A minor fine of 10 gold

2.20: It is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a loincloth.
    -Recommended Sentence: Fine

2.28: You may be arrested for vagrancy if you do not have at least 10 Gold
    Coin on your person
-Recommended Sentence: Community Service/Fine/Short Jail Time
I note that this law has not been updated to show our previous vote.

These laws offer nothing to the city, and merely cause unnecessary bureaucracy.

The initial law of 2.28 was voted and changed some (Aug 2007…again X game years ago) by Lady Elenwyd

::Mariston again reads from a book of records::

    @cdbacc5bf2:

2.28: You may be arrested for vagrancy if you do not have at least 10 Gold
    Coin on your person
-Recommended Sentence: Community Service/Fine/Short Jail Time"

is changed to a lower amount of gold. Ten gold is a lot of money and some might not have that kind of money. As it is now the law will not serve the purpose and it's unfair. Further more I think it will ruin the reputation of the prosperous city of Peltarch more than it does any good.

I would like to suggest an amount of five gold instead of ten gold.

Thank you all senators for listening to my proposition.

It seems the person known as Daveth, whose vitriol against the Triad is due to his banning from our Temples, due to a flagrant disregard for the gods of the Triad and their holy place, is clearly lacking information on which to base his vitriol.
What of the poor in the docks, well regarding that matter the Temple has recently provided ships, fishing vessels and coin to those that seek employment. Again it seems a lack of information is abundantly clear here, the poor fellow seems bereft of sense.
The Fire Giants, we have a treaty there old chap, though in regard the safety of the city The Order of the Divine Shield has up until this month since the time of the N’Jast wars rebuilding been paying the wages of our fine Defenders, we also saw to the reconstruction of our Western Defences.
As to the cultists that live in the sewers, a hard egg to crack that one, again it may be of interest to our vitriolic friend the Order and the temple saved city from being drawn into the Abyss by the machinations of said cultists. Again he shows a lack of information, basing his accusations on his hatred of the Triad.
Shall I continue with what hath been achieved by the Order and the Temple of the Triad, curing the plague with aid of allies, fighting in the forefront of the Eastlander war, Fighting in the forefront of the Civil War, Stopping the creature known as The Little Lady, Preventing the Hells from spilling into this city, Preventing a Talonian curse from poisoning and spreading disease in the city, stopping a cult of the demon of the undead from gaining a foothold in the city….::pauses and catches his breath:: ..the list rather does go on. I think I can suggest we have done a good deal more than him….what exactly hath thou done?

  • @111cbb5d4f:

Also, any slave who escapes to here will receive 100 gold from myself personally. That settles that.

"Just like I said, it took me pointing it out first. They don't even know their own stupid laws!"

  • Ronan motions an arm toward Daveth as he walks off..

If you feel this insane man's words hold true, then the slaves are welcome to escape to Norwick, where the same law is in place. They have no vagrancy law there.

Also, any slave who escapes to here will receive 100 gold from myself personally. That settles that.

  • Daveth struts up to the stand after the Senator is done, and straightens his cloak, then unstraightens it again.

"Well, well, if it isn't the Senate acting high and mighty. I've heard about what Mariston said, how interesting. They hadn't even banned slavery this whole time and they've been acting all morally superior! Whoop-de-shite! It took bloody -Norwick- outlawing it for them to catch on, and then they come up here and spoon feed you talk about how great they are. All this talk is nothing but a distraction. What about right here in Peltarch? What about the problems we have? What about giants? What about the cultists that live in our sewers? What about the poor at the docks? What about the uncertainty? What about the corruption at the Temple of the Triad?"

He thrusts one finger into the air

"Ah-Hah! Would you all like to hear a funny joke? If slaves come to Peltarch they'll be arrested, for vagrancy under Law 2.28 which strictly says you may not be without at least ten coin on your person or you'll be arrested. The best part is, a recommended punishment of a FINE. What's the precious Triad doing about that one? Where's the justice now, Tyr? Speaking of injustice, Law 1.10a allows the Senate and Guard to legally torture you! Where are the priests of Ilmater protesting this? I'll tell you where the Triad is, they're stuffing their pockets full of coin and funneling it to certain individuals in the Senate!"

Daveth wiggles his finger around in the air a lot

"This is more than just same old politics. They want a monopoly on faith. They want a monopoly on your mind. They distract you from the real problems! You think the Senate really cares about you? They're too busy with their own agendas! They preach what your morality should be, and so speaking of slavery…you're their slaves! You get to vote once every bloody generation when a Senator dies. That's the most you've ever gotten to vote for any kind of change. Don't want to be taxed more? Too bad! You have no say, they own you! Before we start worrying about everywhere else, what about right here in Peltarch!?"

He clears his throat and slams his fist on the podium

"And before people from the Triad come up here and start acting, just remember, I had to bloody well point it out before they'd even do a thing! I want freedom, and I want it here first! Long live the Jewel!"

After making his ambiguous speech, Daveth laughs a lot, and then walks off.

  • *Vladimir stands listening to Ronan quietly in a refined suit of armour, topped with a crown.

As, almsot tradition it seems dictates, many would expected to take the stand next, yet he does not move, thinking quietly for a few minutes after the speech before leaving the city*

  • A few days later, Senator Ronan again takes the rant stand..

Recent news has come to my attention. News that is not at all good, but I believe it should be heard.

Recently, a group of slaves attempted to escape Oscura's confines, but were caught. Instead of just being returned to their masters, they were put on pikes on display just outside the cave leading to Oscura. For a city that preaches law, Oscura sure enjoys breaking their own when they wish to send a message.

I quote a law from the Pactus, which holds Oscura's laws:

    @88305089f6:

Any grave mistreatment of slaves as observed by the Red Falcons will equate to punishments as minor fines, with increased punishments for repeat offenders.

I would consider killing the slaves and putting them on pikes as more then just "grave mistreatment.." It's just downright disgusting. Yet even under this supposed law they posted, they would still commit such a horrid act.

Now, you may wonder what this has to do with us, and I will tell you. They put the corpses of these desperate slaves on display on the surface, for all to see. This is clearly a blatant taunt from the dark city, perhaps protesting Norwick's and Peltarch's new laws by being even more cruel to the slaves. To let us know they do not believe in freedom and the rights of others. They would ignore their own laws just to send us all on the surface a message.

They probably think that it was the right move, but it is not. They draw attention to themselves, negative attention. They told the senate they wanted to change. They told us that they want peaceful relations. But, my fellow citizens, they are clearly very contradictory to what they "tell" us.

I imagine some Oscuran will come up here and try to argue my points. It's only natural that they wish to open their big mouths, spout nonsense, and then smirk. But just remember, that no matter what they say, they killed innocent people. Murdered desperate individuals, and basically laughed about it by putting the corpses on display.

Narfell is a land of freedom, and I say any who wish to take anyone's right to their own choices, is not welcome.

After, Ronan steps down from the stand.
