An ugly mageling
-
Pinya's real name is Pinyaniel Gerreth, but she used the short form to better identify with herself, and less with her family. She was born as the middle one of three daughters to a common family in the outskirts of Harrowdale. Her father was an innkeeper, and her mother was the tavern maid. Pinya was the different one in the family, that much was apparent from her birth. Her mother suffered some sort of illness during her pregnancy, and Pinya was born slightly deformed. Her skin has always had a slight sicklish yellow colour, and is nothing like the smooth, silky skin of her two sisters. Her skull was also slighty off. Her nose is flat and looks like it's broken, and her jawline isn't quite right, which makes her teeth to be not so neatly aligned. Also her voice has always been a little weak, and she speaks very quiet, and has trouble raising her voice above a normal speaking voice. Right from when she was a child, her sisters teased her about her looks, and she could tell that her parents weren't happy with her either. Actually her parents really only felt sorry for her, but were always too busy to really discuss the matter with her.
She never really made any friends, because she was either teased about her looks, or she was too scared to approach anyone. Instead, she spend the time alone, reading books and listening to people talk in her parent's inn. When she was seventeen, a travelling wizardess stayed at the inn, and approached Pinya, curious about the quiet girl in the corner. The wizardess, Maura, was a good-hearted one and Pinya actually chatted with her for many hours. When Maura left, Pinya gathered her meager possensions the following night, and followed her. She only left a note for her parents, explaining that she left to seek her place in the world.
She caught up with Maura in the Harrowdale docks, and begged the wizardess to take her with her. After a few hours of serious talking, Maura said yes, and accepted Pinya as her apprentice, of sorts. With Maura Pinya travelled for almost a year, all around the Sea of Fallen Stars, until they finally arrived at Ilmwatch. From there they continued north, towards Heliogabalus, which was Maura's home. Pinya learned a lot of things during these months. Her first spell was Daze, which she found amusing to use. Maura had noticed that the young girl had a real knack for understanding Illusion and Enchantment spells. At first Pinya was rather reckless with her spells, but Maura taught her to respect the arcane arts, and to always follow the rules, because they were there for a good reason. She also introduced her to Lady Mystra, and Pinya realized that Mystra was the one who had always been whispering little secrets in her heart.
After spending two more years with Maura in Heliogabalus, Pinya had become fluent in both Draconic and Elven, which were to help her study magic. She also picked up Damaran, as that was the language of the people in these parts. She had also grown in confidence, as she had learned to master some of the arcane arts, and even if she still was a little shy, she could now stand up for herself.
One evening Maura finally told her that her training was complete. She was now a real wizard, but she also told her that this was only the beginning. Only by going out and seeing the world for herself she could master the secrets of the Weave. This wasn't a surprise to Pinya, and she had already decided that she would leave for Narfell, to the city of Peltarch. They said goodbye the following day, and Maura gave Pinya a dagger as a parting gift, and wished her on her way. Pinya travelled east, and boarded the first ship to Peltarch.
