Forgotten Memories
-
Hey guys this is pretty short and snappy, it's just helping me to fill out my character's backstory in sort of a general framework. Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think. Some of it is supposed to be actual journal writing, some of it is just his backstory that even he doesn't know…yet.
Entry 1: Introspection.
Who… am I? I must begin there.
An elf.
A wizard. No more... perhaps much less. What does wisdom say? We all must face some difficulty. I seem to have seen my fair share... but, such hubris.
Perhaps I truly am a Gold Elf. A gilded elf. A misguided token of a past age and a forgotten truth. My mind! My mind...! What havoc in a wizard's mind. Remember, forget. Remember, forget. My life is spent in the pursuit of shredding my memories.
The microcosm of a spell, the macrocosm of my life. I wonder, what have I forgotten?
A pull at the edge of memory. A frightening sorrow I have known these for the past 70 years of my life. Perhaps the time has finally come to confront the shadow, and run no longer.
Entry 2: A Haunting Vision
That face, that haunting face. Who is she?
Entry 3: The Beginning of Memory
Sitting on the cliffs, the elf watched the breakers for days on end. He had sympathy for the waves, forever destined to smash themselves upon the jagged rocks.
The headaches were back. Not enough reverie, they told him.
The forest rose behind him, and beyond that the concerns of a gold elf loomed large. Bickering, infighting... aristocracy. Bullshit.
Sometimes, it was all he could do not to throw himself off these damned cliffs.
Entry 4: East
The face, and a softly-spoken word. "East."
Entry 5: The Beginning of Loss
The bustling city of Waterdeep was like nothing he had ever seen. And he wanted to be rid of it even more than Evermeet.
So when a caravan to the South sought to hire the tavern-dwelling novice wizard, he jumped at the opportunity.
It was a hell of a long trip. But he found himself enjoying it. Having never before thought of himself a wandering spirit, the freedom was fresh and he savored it, despite the difficulties of the road.
A year passed, quickly for the elf. He seemed to come out of himself during this time, finding an airy and friendly personality within.
He made human friends, he even began to pick up on their habits and speech. He felt happy, and his reverie was as a new thing, untroubled and bright.
Entry 6: Meeting
It had been a year, and he hadn't seen her. He had almost forgotten. Almost.
So it came as quite a shock when he saw her in a small tavern in Northern Calimshan. She was sitting with what was obviously an adventuring party.
She was human at first glance, but half-elven at second. Crimson hair to her shoulders, and a symbol of Ilmater around her neck, she sat quietly and smiled as a drunk and bawdy dwarf at her table told jokes.
He was mesmerized, seeing the face he had known in his dreams for years.
Afraid to stare, he remained in the tavern until it was closing. It came as a surprise when she and the dwarf approached his table.
"Ey elfy. Ye lookin' fer werk? Us'n needin ee mage."
"Wh-where are you going...?" he asked.
"East." She spoke, and he was speechless as he looked at her. She smiled, shy.
The dwarf looked between them with a leery eye and spoke finally, "Well ah guess tha' settled."
Diana. That was her name.
