Character Name:Samin GeigneStaring across the street at the entourage of people following the Noble, Samin sneered to himself. Too many Nobles these days wandered around niave, pompous and arrogant. Individuals who claimed glory and great deeds but rarely acknowledging that the majority of their accomplishments were achieved on the backs of the common citizen.
Samin's mind clouded with dark thoughts, drifting back to his earlier youth
It had been a rather pleasant day, when Samin and his brothers had watched the Army pass their fathers farm. The King surrounded by dozens of glistening knights at the forefront leading his men off to some distant war. Soldiers with long pikes carried over their shoulders and hundreds of archers with the largest bows he had ever seen added to the cloud of dust that Samin and his brothers had watched snake across the valley since early morning. Up and down the lines, Officers on horse back shouted orders, and the occasional dispatch rider or scout rode up ahead and beyond the Army. It was mind boggling how many men Samin now looked upon. An officer on horse back finished speaking to one of the riders and moved his horse over to where Samin and his brothers stood gawking. "The King could use any help you could lend, you Lads looks strong and tough and our quest is noble…We march to fight off an invading force of evil orcs and goblin folk that would surely lay waste to your farms and carry off your women! Join us to protect the lives of those you love!" Samin couldn't believe it, his brothers and himself had always dreamed of being hero's vanquishing evil and saving the damsels, many a summer day when the chores had been finished they would go off with their wooden swords or other improvised weapons and act out sieges and rescues and other noble deeds. It only took a quick glance between them to see their minds were made up. "
We are proud to serve!", Samin's older brother spoke up voicing their concent.
"Good lads, just fall in to the rear an officer will give you further instructions, when we stop our quartermaster will outfit you with what gear we can provide. Make sure you keep up!", with that the Officer reigned his horse back into the procession.
It was later that evening when their father returned back from market that he found the note and began to cry.
The novelty of being a soldier quickly wore off with the Geigne brothers as the army moved towards its destination. The blisters, endless pace and the shortage of food were the first indications that soldiering wasn't exactly what they had imagined. But the stark realization of what they had got themselves into dawned upon the Geigne Brothers when they stood upon the field of battle.....
Pitch, Fire and smoke permeated the air. The screams of the dying and stench of death were nerve racking. Never before had Samin seen such carnage as he did that day. The viciousness of their enemy was unbelievable as they slashed and tore at their ranks. Samin had lost count of the number of men he had seen killed, but at least his brothers and himself had remained alive, huddling with their other comrades. A glutteral horn sounded across the battlefield, and a pack of worg riders emerged out of the smoke on their left flank tearing into the unsuspecting men, those not impaled on the orc spears were ripped to shreds by the worgs. All Samin could do to stay alive was lash out wildly with his sword trying to keep the enemy at bay. A scream went up beside him and he turned to see his older brother fall to the ground hewn nearly in half by an orcish axe, the wielder placed his boot on the body to retrieve the weapon. In that instant Samin lashed out driving his blade through the orc's intestines. Suddenly the sky filled with thousands of dark raven feathered arrows, and Samin barely managed to raise his shield above his head. Nearly knocked to the ground by the impacting arrows he glanced around as glutteral screams of agony rose up, his younger brother was not as quick and an arrow penetrated deep through his skull. Samin's youngest brother fell to the ground, eyes open starring back at him dead.
A familiar horn sounded from behind, and Samin glanced up to see the King and his entourage turn their horses to leave, one of the officers broke off to gather some remaining men and make a stand to cover the retreating King. The battle which was on the brink turned into utter chaos as those left behind realized their cause had been abandoned, the orcs sensing their victory renewed their assaults. Samin cast one last glance across his shoulder at the retreating King and nobles and turned to face the attackers.
With no time to grieve for his fallen brothers he tried to bolster the remaining Men's morale,"We fight or we die for sure, make your life count!"
The abandoned army fought on, out of a sheer will to survive and victory was barely managed at great cost.
A nobleman returned to the battlefield with a small contingent of knights the next day. Samin looked up from the recently dug graves of his brothers as the Nobleman approached. The Nobleman stopped and looked down at Samin,"It looks like our great King has led us to a most fortunate victory, Helm be praised!" The noble turned around to ride off leaving Samin standing there furious.
Samin returned home to his father's farm, to deliver the news of his two brothers. Heart broken, it was no surprise that Samin's father took ill that winter with fever and died.
Samin later learned their precious King had returned home at the head of a glorious procession of his nobles and knights, claiming to have led his army in vanquishing the evil marauding army of orcs.
With nothing to keep him at the farm, he sold it to the first buyer he could find and took to drinking. Eventually the money ran out and Samin was forced to pursue a new line of work. All that was left was the sword, for Samin realized that killing had come easily to him on that battlefield. Thus began Samin's mercenary days.
Samin's thoughts returned to his surroundings
A bell somewhere in Peltarch sounded, signaling it was noon, which quickly reminded Samin just how hungry he was. He would have to find work soon or face the possibility of starving to death. Quickly he set off insearch of opportunity.
