The sun rose over the Shining Plains and the smell of lavender and honeysuckle filled the air. In the distance a lion roared and the sounds of the morning were becoming ever louder, the town of Briarmere sat like a small dot on the plains. There were no walls and no gates. A series of small stone buildings with thatched roofs stood in the vastness of the plains. A well, constructed by the finest dwarven stonemasons that money could buy rested in the center of a large grassy area of the small town.

A scream could be heard in the early morning, the sounds of labor pains and the screech of a mother before birth. Outside the stone house stood a man dressed in a leather jerkin pacing back and forth. He turns and says to his friend, “ I think she’s dying in there.” He, then, pauses for a few moments and grits his teeth not being able to comprehend the pain his love was in. His friend looks up from his plate of eggs and says, “ oh, Rilon don’t worry so much. The priests are with her.” Rilon nods as he continues to pace.

Several hours pass and the screams eb and flow with the tides of labor. In a few hours, the sun sits high overhead. A priest bearing the symbol of Chauntea bursts through the door to the house. “Rilon, you have a son.” She holds the child over head and sings praises to the Earthmother. Rilon smiles showing his perfect smile and takes his son from the woman. He turns to her and says, “How is Bia?” The priestess smiles and says, “she is resting peacefully.”

Rilon stood holding his son. He couldn’t believe how beautiful his child was. “I will call you Riley,” he stated as he heard a roar from behind him. He turned and was shocked to see a large male lion standing behind him. He started to run, but he knew this would invoke the animals desire for the chase. Instead he stood still. The animal appeared to be smiling. It walked forward and where fear for his life and of his child should have been in his spirit there was a sense of peace. The lion clawed at the ground. Rilon stepped back and the lion followed roaring again and scratching at the ground. Not wanting to place his child on the ground Rilon knelt before the beast. The lion raised a paw and laid it on the baby. The priestess of Chauntea bowed her head and spoke sweetly, “Rilon, the lion is a symbol of Nobanion…your…son…he’s been chosen of Nobanion.”

Years passed. The babe grew into an attractive towheaded boy who followed his father and adored his mother. He learned to hunt at an early age and the lion from the day of his birth followed him constantly never out of sight. As he grew, it became obvious he was destined to do great things. His skill with an axe and his form improved as he grew into a strapping young man. He began to travel with the lion who he insisted was named Borimot. Rilon and Bia were very proud of their son. In the summer of his 15th year, he set off with Borimot on a grand hunt. The two journeyed far enjoying the wilderness and Riley learning to cooperate with nature and to hide and to stalk. What he lacked in grace, he made up for in effort and charm.

The two traveled for several tendays. Upon their return, they found their home was being pillaged by goblins. The men were fighting and falling to the horde. Riley rushed into the fray. Borimot, on his heels, fought in unison with the young champion. They were an oiled machine until Riley heard the chanting of a goblin caster and heard the crack of the lightning as it seared through Borimots body. The great cat staggered and almost fell. He turned and roared at Riley and charged off at the crowd headed at them. Riley took the moment to flee into the forest. There, he hid and watched as the goblins overwhelmed the entire village wiping out the forces assembled. In a fiery battle of divine and arcane magic, the goblins battled the priests of Chauntea and at last the earthmother embraced her followers and took them to the House of Nature.

The goblins went as quickly as they came. Riley approached the village with caution killing the few goblin grunts that were left picking through the bodies. He found Borimot’s body lying dead on the ground and he fell and wept. He wept for his father, his mother, his entire existence. He knew he had nothing here now. He wandered for days in the woods praying to Nobanion for help and guidance. On the morning of the 14 of Mirtul, Riley spotted a great lion on a hill. The lion roared and turned his head to a caravan that was passing through the woods. Riley approached the caravan cautiously. The sign read Frago Tinook’s Emporium. Riley approached the caravan guards with both hands in the air and asked where the caravan was heading. He was told the caravan was bound for the town of Norwick to deliver good to Frago Tinook. With some of the gold he had on his person and an agreement to hunt for food for the caravan, he was afforded passage and arrived in Norwick.
