Samus Swift. Let me tell you a little bit about him and where he’s from.

A couple of days ride from the town of Jiyyd lies a small forest. It was in that forest that Samus’ father, Blaeric made a homestead.

Blaeric was a hard man who made his living off the land, trapping and hunting. Once every two months, he would load his cart and take his hides into Jiyyd to trade for supplies. The only thing soft about him was the place in his heart for his wife and child.

Samus’ mother, Maegda, was the only daughter of an innkeeper. Blaeric would stay at the inn when he would make his way into town. Maegda worked at her father’s inn as both bard and barkeep. It was her silken singing that softened the hardness of Blaeric’s heart.

On the day Samus was born, Blaeric and Maegda took him into the woods and set him at the root of a massive forest oak. There they prayed that Mielliki would come and bless their child. The chanted together - Make him lithe and strong like the spring willows. Make him swift and kind as the forest breezes. Make him wise and sharp as the forest owls. And as most prayers request go, some were answered and others have yet to be seen.

As the child Samus grew, his father would take him into the forest with him. He taught him the basics of hard work, forest living, and the trades of a woodsman - stalking, tracking, hunting, and fishing. He showed Samus the plants in the forest that made good eating and which were poisonous. And soon Samus was able to walk in harmony with the creatures of the woods.

Maegda, on the other hand, taught her child how to interact with people. She told him the old stories and taught him to read the Common letters. Samus learned from her the courtesy and manners that he should show to others. And Maegda showed him more outward affection than his father did, though his father loved him no less.

Samus was a happy child, quick to laugh and make jokes. He was also dutiful and not one to make trouble. In the forest you had to depend on your family in order to survive. His parents felt that Mielikki had blessed them in their son.

During the year Samus turned twenty, an evil wind took hold of his father and made it’s home in his chest. Blaeric rapidly weakened, coughing blood and barely breathing. Maegda, of course, did her best to take care of her ailing husband using what remedies the forest could provide. However, not long after Blaeric took to bed, so did Samus’ mother. The evil wind spread into her as well.

Samus, who had been spent the past week stalking a large albino hart, came home to find his parents very ill. Determined to make his parents well, he left home to find a healer that would expel the evil from his parents. As he raced to Jiyyd, he prayed that Mielikki would protect his gentle mother and rugged father. Unfortunately, by the time Samus had brought a cleric back to his forest home, Blaeric and Maegda were no longer living.

Driven by his grief, Samus gathered his things and left his home in the forest. In his heart, it seemed nothing was left for him there. That world was too small. The memories would close down upon him and squeeze his heart until he thought it would burst.

Slowly wandering along the path to Jiyyd, he decided to begin anew. And yet even through his sadness, a small spirit in Samus became excited. Further down that road, there were new people to meet and adventures to be had.
