Thradring's travels

  • Thradring didn't know for how long she had been sleeping. It was way past noon she opened her eyes to the clear blue sky. She squinted to the bright light. Now that it was daytime she should be able to find out where she exactly had wound up.

First things first, she thought and got up to wash her face in a small pool that lay in the centre of the clearing where she had apparently fallen asleep. She splashed the water over her face, under her armpits and washed her hands. For a moment she gazed at the face that was staring back at her from the surface.

She took some bread from her backpack and gathered her stuff whilst having a meager breakfast.

How could she have been this stupid, she questioned herself as she rolled up her small blanket. How could she have done this because of.. because of some guy!

She clearly saw the scene before her, like she was reliving the whole ordeal. She had been training with the other archers from Veria. Due to the last war with the drow, the number of Vakhar en'Quessir had greatly decreased to protect the city so from all over the city young people had been drafted to ensure some sort of defense again.

The war had been a bloody one. The enemy struck when they had least expected it, during the annual moon fest and had entered through the back door, the crypts. The battle continued for days, weeks even and on both parties many bodies hit the ground, never to get up again.

In the end however they had come out victorious. Though losses were great, they had managed to drive the drow from their city and even had managed to negotiate some kind of truce. Neither ofthe parties would show itself in the other's territory. The border of which was marked by the small forest river Ka'Luil.

In the weeks that passed they had counted their losses and Thradring, like many others had been drafted to become a Vakhar. Every day she trained her shooting skills outside the city, in the open grounds near the river. She had improved a great deal over the last 3 days, and was promoted to the advanced class by the Nikerym of the Vakhar.

And then she had met him… Belurion, the son of the Nikerym. Thradring blushed at the mere though of him. Seeing hem would make her knees feel like pudding. Speaking to him, she hadn't even dared. His hair was long, hanging casually over his shoulders and his armor glittered in the sun.

And then that day, he had called out. Vedui, Thradring, he had said. He had known her name, he had noticed her. She was aiming her bow at the disk on the training field but she could see him approaching her from the corner of her eye. Concentrate, come on, concentrate, she told herself, but all she could think about was Belurion.

And then it happened. Her palms had gotten sweaty by the anxiety and she had felt the arrow slip. It flew through the air, past the target and over the river where it struck a female drow, who was fishing with some companions in the river.

A moment of silence fell, even the birds have seemed to have lost their song. She just stared at the fallen drow, but she didn't get up. Then a cry pierced the silence from across the river. She couldn't understand the words that were shouted but she, and everyone present knew what it meant. It was a battle cry.

And then she ran. Away from home, away from the drow, away from everything. She knew this death, though accidental would ruin the delicate agreements between the Verians and the drow, and it wouldn't take a day for the drow to attack again. She couldn't face that. She had brought the entire city in danger. She wouldn't live with it. She had to get away. Far away.

She ran untill she couldn't run anymore and simply had to sleep. Where exactly she was running to, she didn't know, but it was far from home. Since then she had travelled north for a moon and a half untill now.

Thradruin looked over the pool and saw smoke at the horizon. A village. She swallowed the last piece of bread. She needed new rations anyway, and maybe someone there could tell her where she was.

She took her backpack and bow and walked towards the village.
