Genzir Malark: itinerant wizard



  • The Malark family are prosperous merchants in a small town in the south of Damara, on the banks of the Icelace River. Being merchants, they value their good name above all else, and Genzir was raised to always be honorable and keep his word. Being merchants, the Malark family also harbors a healthy mistrust of magic, though this could also be because they are embarassed by the misadventures of Genzir's cousin, Faldir, who is a very bad necromancer. Once, he tried to re-animate a sick dog. Poor thing wasn't affected, but it had eaten a couple of chickens earlier, and you shoulda seen it yelp! But I digress.

    Genzir's childhood was happy and relatively unremarkable, except for an awkward holiday dinner when Faldir, to the horror of the whole family, re-animated the carcass of the goose they had just eaten, which ran right off the table and started chasing the cat. Poor thing was never quite the same… And then there was the time when he...oh, nevermind, you get the idea.

    I suppose you could say that Genzir simply wanted something more than the life of a merchant, which he was nonetheless cut-out for. Or maybe he somehow felt the need to prove that magic could be a force for good, or at least good for you. So to his parents' chagrin, Genzir became the apprentice of Vasooga, a local hedge witch who came into town once and a while and sold cures for warts and the skitters. She not only taught him the basics of wizard magic, but helped him to learn Draconic, and the Sylvan tongue--the language of the fey people. Not very practical, you might think, but it helped a lot when he sought out Khanum, a pixie, who is now his clever and loyal companion.

    Genzir, though pretty much a straight-shooter himself, took a liking to Vasooga's clever sneakiness and her tall tales. This, along with his love of lore and knowledge, led him to become a follower of Oghma, the god of knowledge, lore, travel and trickery. True to his merchant blood, he soon took to the road, leaving behind his loving but somewhat relieved family. Vasooga encouraged him to explore the world for himself, but she gave him one last assignment: Genzir must seek out the weakest, most pathetic of creatures, such as kobolds, goblins and young adventurers, who rely on their overwhelming numbers in battle. He must learn how they behave as a group, whether they fight as a mob or as an organized band; whether they tend to their wounded, or whether they leave them to die. He already knew, as he set out, that this would be the most profound of all his lessons.

    Genzir has traveled far and wide, spending a few years with a company of elves, and another on the road by himself. He generally doesn't seek out danger, in fact he avoids it completely, so he has little experience with battle. Despite his modestness and apparent lack of ambition, Genzir has a strength of character, and, it seems, a calling. He just might be destined for great things.
