Varimathras Maleficence
-
A good tempered, highly intelligent and friendly rock gnome, Varimathras is owner to a turbulent past and a troubling uncertain future, which exist in starkly contrasting juxtaposition to his warm demeanor. Identified at an early age as a magical prodigy, though only recently involved in the mystical arts, he wields an affinity yet unparalleled (save for his appreciation of strong alcohol) for sorcery and the manipulation of arcane energies, tirelessly striving to advance his powers, and mastry over them. Varimathras furthermore exudes a vast charm which he utilizes to great effect in his interactions with others, possessed of a strong natural charisma in seeming contradiction to his unconventional, and some may say (the non-hin/gnomish at least) repulsive appearance. He speaks fluent common, gnomish and hin, in addition to multiple outsider languages as a consequence of his extensive experience with extra planar entities; knowledge that may very well be attributable to his empathic connection with Malice, his Ice Mephit familiar.
Short and stocky, as gnomes tend to be, with the trademark jet black skin familiar to his particular sub-species, these otherwise mundane features are interrupted by unusual dark red hair and eyes, a hue as if of blood, and enigmatic crimson tattoos which adorn much of his body. These tattoos seem to radiate palpable magical power, and a malign aura which follows the gnome like an unerring shadow. Though attractive as his race goes, the remainder of his appearance is far from exceptional, sporting trimmed facial hair, baldness and smooth even features. He is lean, and fit, stalwart, healthy and enduring. The very face of constitution.
Refugee to Narfell from lands gripped in the vicious maw of civil war and chaos between Gnomish magi and technologists, his psyche struggles under a terrible and grevious burden, a memento of the pain in having to flee his homelands, while his family, friends and peers were slaughtered in the name of ignorance and undue suspicion. Forsaking the gods for having failed him as he struggles to cope with his agony, and himself, it is a tragedy that has yet to be resolved in his mind, forever repeating in a cycle of guilt, sorrow and reminiscence until it threatens to consume the very noble and endearing soul that permitted it to proliferate…
