OOC: Camp Lull?

  • Hello, Campers (sorry, I just always wanted to say that),
Back when I first started playing Narfell, late December '04, the Camp was very much a happening spot. The Fires were always a great place to sit and conversate with great roleplayers, like Norwick's South Fire but . . . Drunker. It was great fun. It took awhile (and a potential war) to get Ty to move to the Gypsy Camp, but the biggest motivation (for me) was that I knew the Camp was a fun place.

Nowadays, it seems like the Camp just stays empty of PCs. All day long . . . There could be 12 or 50 people on the server, there's still 0 by the Fires. Or, occasionally, one or two. This seems sad, to me, in a way, because the Fires, in short, rocked. The Forums haven't been incredibly active lately, either, but Town forums can easily be like that; it's mostly the emptiness of the Camp itself that has me concerned.

I wanted to start this thread as a jumping-off point for discussion about why this may be, and how it can change, if it can change. What does Jiyyd and Peltarch have that the Camp doesn't, right now?

This is not meant to be a complaint thread, or for whiney posts, or anything along those lines. The idea is to have constructive discussion about the Camp. Where have all the big movers and shakers gone, the ex-Elders and the infamous Gali and Rom personalities?

Perhaps, another Gypsy Carnival would help, or some player-run event like that. Not all of the responsibility can be shifted on the DMs, after all. It can be a simple matter of the players wanting to see a more active Gypsy Camp. The new redesign is very nice, and it's a shame to let it sit dormant. I, for one, want to see something happen. After all, what does the Gypsy Camp not have that everybody else does? Dwarves. 😛

Hey, and if the Camp does hop and I am just not playing at the right hours, reply and let me know—I'll play then.

  • Not to ignore this thread, but there will be news after the staff meeting we are having tomorrow evening.

  • Alright…Belade is offering a free sensual massage for everybody who moves to the camp.

is stormed by a mass of people

Calm down people, draw a ticket and get in line please

  • hi fives elrin i remember those days too : ). Ah I missed them.

  • Sorry Sy'wyn has been on walkabout from town to town, he will start appearing in camp much more often. What does that have to do with anything…? I'll tell you... i have a fondness for hold spells, and nothing better to do then target those running from inner camp to the pass

  • Jiyyd has had a lot of DM presence of late, and it is attracting everyone. Rose would be found laying around the camp fires, just staring of into the sky until someone came along with a good little hunt. But, then that damn 😄 Pete came along and with timing and all, she has spent most of her time in Jiyyd. someone has to save that town 😛 I was also thinking Rose might set up a high stakes game which i will post shortly (Star Wars is being released tonight and i can't miss that). Until Kerby gets back, we, the players, will have to run a couple events and keep the camp active.

  • It really is always where the DM's are and where the hunting is for where people are.

Norwick used to always have a large amount of DM attention, many hunting grounds, and the newbie quests. Now with the removal of some goblins and the better spreading of DM's norwick isn't always THE city.

Jiyyd now just got a new SDM that is kicking it into high gear and is excited so is getting a lot of things going on in the city. Along with that it has a guild that is just regaining a lot of activity that is based out of it. As well it has a abundant amount of presently dangerous and needed to be fought spawns.

The camp was booming when Smoo was going dev crazy and Raptor was going event crazy. Now with raptor gone, and smoo dealing with some things and busy after doing all the deving its slowed up some…however it still gets visited a decent bit from the little i've seen due to the nice spawns around it now.

Peltarch has two busy DM's currently and a decent bit of interesting spawns around it as well as some good player driven intrigue plots, so its been rather busy lately.

It all moves with an eb and flow. When Kanen and Vino were burnt out peltarch was a ghost town for MONTHS, when the camp lost its DM's about a year back it was a ghost town, jiyyd had been a ghost town for a long time. It kind of just goes back and forth. I think as more DM's come up, get aquainted with area's, and get plots started you'll see it ebb back to the camp eventually

  • hugs the SMOO

  • @0844c3af3d=Gobbletom:

I actually have a large plot going on in the camp and the areas surrounding it. I just have been busy lately and not gotten to do much, but give me a week and I'll liven things up for you campers. 😉

    ACK!

I would like to take a moment to appologize for my big mouth…. 😉

    tee hee hee

oh look school gets incredibly busy next week.... acutally it does two group presentations and a major test.

The odd thing is that just a couple of weeks ago there was a post called "Camp Fever" that was wondering why the camp was so Full of people 🙂 This was, of course, right before they shipped Bel off to Jiyyd.

And Gobbletom to Pelt and Kerby taking a breather after the overhaul.

/me pokes Elrin in his eye. Tala was there for that 😛

  • Be patient, and it'll start rocking again. It usually does… 😉

  • Psh.. you guys think this lull is bad? This is nothing… Seriously.

Once upon a time... There was a giant stretch of absolutely no dm activity for awhile.. This was partly because of how few PC's chilled around the camp at the time... For a couple months there I honestly believed that Erok and I were the only ones lol. Most of then time I just sat around by myself... Sad isn't it?

Anyways, I haven't been around as much lately as my PC is out of commision. But I should be getting it back today so I'm hoping to be around a little more...

Belthor still has to finish up the undead plotline as far as I know... Not sure if my absence has held that up or not... If I have, my apologies. Hopefully we can get things moving again soon. Your best bet is to gather some people on your own and go see what kind of trouble you can get into. Anyone can start a carnival type event, if you've the motivation.

I think you can all rest assured that Kerby will be back in full force soon enough though... The camp overhaul was heavy and who wouldn't need a little downtime after all that work? ... Have you hugged your SMOO today? 😄 I have no doubt things will get busy again... The population always fluxuates.

  • Unfortunately, you'll never get people to stay in towns when half the server is in some other town.

Which is explainable IC by the fact that most of the PCs are adventurers, and will go where the adventure is.

A good PC-run event like the carnival would be a very good idea for getting people into the camp, but after that, we need to keep them there, and the best way to do that is regular and spontaneous DM attention.

Right now, from what I understand, Kerby is busy most of the time with behind-the-scenes SDM stuff, so asking her to also get in game and run events with frequency would be way too much.

When we had Belthor, it was ideal, because events would fall out of the sky randomly on a nigh-constant basis.

However, we have plenty of wandering DMs, and they tend to go where the people are, as well, so if we can get people into the camp in large numbers, the chances of DM events happening goes up, and therefore, the chance of those people STAYING in the camp goes up.

In other words, sign me up for the carny.

  • Star usually spends a deal of her time around the camp. Occassionally it degenerates into making trees into sawdust or stalking and hunting a few spiders on her own because no-ones around.

She does wander though when she gets really bored 😉

  • The Halfling Defence League

Sad to say its because of Jiyyd. Its the fun town now. Due to frequent dm events spunning there making it like a hot tourist spot. That's only part of the reason of course, and all this is based solely on my own speculation. One way to have even distribution between all the towns is that players DO travel around and live in narfell in an rp fashion instead of going to wherever there's more players and more events, and riches to be had!
