Darryanna's Tale
Melavane watched with evident pride as his youngest daughter eagerly paged her way though book after book. Father to four children Melvane took special pride in his youngest.....Sul'lina. Named for his wifes grandmother. Melavane, when the two where alone, called her by his own grandmothers name: Darryanna. His grandmother had ignited in him his love of knowledge and he saw this as well in his youngest daughter; which gave him a warmth and closeness to her he had not known before from any of his family.
Darryanna, who was only 40 at his time, was unaware of her fathers feelings for her. She knew he loved her dea
rly, that he called her in secret her special name, that he held her closely when she was scared, and fed her mind when it hungered. In order to please her father she wanted to become a mage, as he was, above all other things. But While Darrys potentional for magic was great, fate would set her upon another path.
She loved her time with her father..but her greatess joy came from her time spent in the barnches of her home, Sudanessalar. Hours upon end she would spend climbing, sliding, and sneaking up on her friends and best of all her older sister. Jenaya was almost 80 by now, and rarely saw Darry as anything but an annoyance. Inwardly Jenaya loved her sister, took pride in her agility and quick wits, but mostly Darry was a troublesome brat to her. Always covered in pink clothing and perching upon high branches, Darry had often rained down rotten fruit or nuts on her, almost invariably after Jenaya had spent hours preparing herself to meet with one boy or another. As such thier relationship was often adversarial. Jenaya trying to escape clean from home, and Darry attempting to splatter some over-rippened fruit upon her sisters well groomed clothes.
Darry's brothers Wythelail, and the eldest child Gatherial were both grown men. Both were established warriors Strong and tall, and distant to young Darry. Niether of them were particuly pleased with either her manner of dress, or with her wild behaivor. Both young men were well disciplined and destined it seemed for great honors among their people as fearless defenders of Tehyer. For Wyth and Gath it seemed few days passed that someone did not come to them with complaints about their youngest sister, much to their displearure. They would often on returning to their fathers home complain to him of her latest antics, and later leave in frustration after Melavane explained away his daughters behavior. But like Jenaya, they as well loved Darry while hoping the small monkey like child would grow out of her wild ways.
Darrys playground as a child was the tree's and undercover of the great forest and she pursued her time there with reckless abandon. On many occasions the citys guard had come across her trapped by wolves or a bear in a tree. Her reputation as a trouble maker grew among all except for her father, who would obstentily hear nothing of it. She had spent much of her time as of late watching a dryad who's tree was close to the city. Darry found as she watched the beautiful creature that she didn't like it, always combing out it's hair and staring into it hand mirror. When the dryad wasn't admiring herself she flirting with the rangers who patrolled near the city, which Darry could not understand at all. She thought the men were as foolish as the boys who followed her sister around and decided it was up to her to teach the uppity dryad a lesson.
A simple plan was hatched....simply take the stupid dryad mirror. She reveled in the thought of the dryad, lost without it's hand mirror, retreating forever into her tree. Quietly one day she lay not far from the dryad as she gaze into her mirror, and when it lay the mirror down to raise the comb to her hair Darry bolted from her hiding spot. She leaped forward and dove on the mirrors resting spot quickly scooping it up and rolling clear of the scene of the crime, then sprinted for the limb back to the city. Darrys heart beat rapidly and his face flushed with success.......right until she found herself frozen in her tracks.
The spell was quite simple for the dryad, taken off gaurd at first by the sneaky little elven girl she had not even had time to let out a cry of surprise. But her shock quickly passed and the spell was cast... the child froze imeadiatly and the dryad quite calmly walked up and took the mirror from the pink claded child. "hmmm.....you are a swift little one aren't you...." she said tapping her chin..."and this color..." running a finger along Darry's tunics hem "so bright ....one you like?". Darry struggled against the magic in vain and tried to shout at the dryad but only muffled words came out "mppphah....yofffe..aajhhere" eventually she gave up and went limp...defeated. A smile crossed the dryads face "a child....I will not harm you child...but you shall learn to respect what is not yours...perhaps a reminder...". The dryad reached out and ran her hands along Darrys hair several times then step back and released her from the spell with a flourish of her hands. "now off with you" and she swatted the young elf hard on her backside....and Darry ran as fast as her little legs would carry her back to Suldanessar.
Darryanna was still shivering from her expierance when she reached the steps of her home......outside her sister sat talking with several boys. As she approached several of the boys errupted into laughter and her sister's face went red with anger. "What have you done Sul'lina!!" she screamed and lept forward grapping Darry by her ear hard. Darry was still in shock and neither responed or attempted to kick Jenaya as she had before when she had pinched at her ears. Almost lifelessly she allowed herself to be dragged into their home and down the hall toward her mothers room. As she struggled to keep up with her sister Darry glanced in the mirror, her hair..it was a bright pink now and no longer the raven black it had always been. Darry would never wear pink again.
