Or: How I quit my job and became a wandering sorcerer at age 30
Character full name: Cassio
Account name: ruwin1Cassio Ara was born the grandson of a famed wizard, although this was kept from him by his parents. His parents were members of the Norwick guard - very by-the-book, law-and-order types. They demanded much of their children.
Cassio was the second son, however - his older brother, Eridus, was every bit the son his family wanted: skilled with a sword, sharp as a tack and with a strong sense of justice. Eridus became a guardsman, like his father, and remains one to this day. Cassio was born handsome, but never very strong, and with only average intelligence.
He didn't have what it took to become a fighter, but he shared his brother's sense of right and wrong. He ended up getting a job working in the prison doing paperwork - processing prisoners, filing and sorting, sometimes attending trial hearings. Most of his spare time he spent reading books on various subjects, doodling or daydreaming.
It wasn't until his late 20's when his magic powers came about. Seemingly from nowhere, a pixie named Vera appeared before him, telling him she was a part of his soul - that they were destined to be friends forever. As you can imagine, this scared the ever-loving piss out of him. He'd thought he'd gone crazy. Eventually, though, he came to realize the nature of his gift, and he decided this was a second chance for him to prove to his family that he IS useful - that he can make a difference in the world beyond sitting behind a desk all day.
Maybe some god out there thought it'd be funny to give a random guy magical abilities? Maybe far darker forces are at work? Maybe it's in the blood? Cassio hasn't even the slightest idea. He doesn't even know what school his spells belong to, or why one hand motion means Protection from Jerks and the other means Summon Magical Labrador. All he knows is evil is out there, and it's gonna get its ass kicked. Hopefully by him. Eventually.
