Laeral Nottian, Selune's Servant
-
Laeral Nottian, born to a family of dairy merchants in the City of Waterdeep, had a normal childhood. As she grew, she developed an affinity for the night sky and began attending school at Selune’s temple where she learned to read, write and tend the wounds of the sick.
As she moved into her pubescent years, she began to hear voices as the moon reaches its highest point over the night sky causing her to rant and say all manner of things. It is the voice of Selune and her many Shards filling her head with many thoughts and images and pulling at the edges of her sanity. She regards it has a holy communion with the goddess but has a stark awareness of the effect that it has on others. She has seen the commoners in the streets in Waterdeep run from her as she giggles and talks to herself at night in the streets.
When, she reached the age of 15 her father passed away and her mother was left with a struggling estate and three small children to raise, so Laeral began to work as a seamstress fixing random pieces of clothing for people and mending broken hems and pockets. She made a modest amount of money and was able to help her mother make ends meet.
She, along with her family, enjoyed evenings of song and reverie and days of poetry reading, working, and teaching the children how to read and write. She began to regard her mother as her own person hero.
Three years passed and the High Priestess of Selune’s Temple in Waterdeep offered to take care of her family and tend to their needs if she would enter into the clergy of the Moonmaiden. Laeral quickly agreed and she and her family sold the families meager estate and moved to the temple complex, where she and her family lived very happily for many months.
The High Priestess, asked that Laeral go the icy land of Narfell where there was rumored to be a following of Shar and do what she could to bring the moonmaidens mercy to those afflicted with shadows and other manners of darkness.
Laeral set out on a caravan and saw a great deal of the world as she passed through and acquired many skills including the use of the throwing knife she acquired from her fathers old friend Marin, to whom the caravan belonged. She also learned to discern the variety and make of many manner of goods.
She arrived in Norwick, alone, and confident and set out to spread her faith and deliver the words of the moon maiden.
