Drums!

  • Anyway travelling the nars enar the gnoll woods, can hear, from afar, the constant sound of drums.

dum dum dum dum dum dum

Maybe it's just an archaic type of telegraph, maybe not!

And on a completly unrelated note  there seems to be more webs than usual up the trees.

  • Giant spiders are becoming more of a problem! They have started to move east of the Gnoll Woods, and south into the Gypsy Camp. Romulus was attacked by a giant barking spider near the Nars Bridge. Running to Peltarch to report the ambush, he met Mystic and Victoria, who agreed to help rid the road of this threat. They found webs in the trees near the Gnoll Woods entrance.

Proceding farther south to the bridge, they encountered several barking spiders and a greater silk spider south of the old tower and just north of the Nars River. After dispatching them, the trio headed west into the Gypsy Pass, but found nothing. When they returned to the area of the tower, they were ambushed by a dozen or more giant spiders.

They defeated those too and headed back up the road to check out the webs. Here they found hatchlings, giant silk spiders, oddly shaped spiders and barking spiders in the woods west of the road. They destroyed all the spiders and Mystic burned their webs. Several more webs were found across the road in the woods on the east side, but no spiders.

It seems likely spiders will continue to invade this area unless the gnolls that are summoning them are supressed. This will require a really strong party. Until then, travelers on the road south from Peltarch should use extra caution.

  • A bold party of adventurers from Peltarch headed to the gnoll woods. Near the entrance, they met an elven hunter who warned them (in an odd and cryptic sort of way) that giant spiders had been seen in these woods. The party (Victoria, Arlan, Corwin, Romulus, and Kalem) proceeded cautiously and encountered both the spiders and the usual gang of gnoll warriors and younglings.

The sound of drums echoing from the southwest drew them deeper. A gnoll youngling appeared to be trying to draw them into the narrow pass beyond the chasm that winds to the west and the deeper gnoll woods. There an ambush of gnolls was waiting, but Victoria's summoned earth elementals, Corwin's spells, and the volleys of arrows by the others took the gnolls down. In the midst of the battle, giant spiders rushed from behind. These too were beaten.

The drums grew louder and Corwin, the mage, detected a gathering of magic forces ahead of them: some kind of summoning. Getting low on spells and fearing they would be overmatched, the party remained in the narrow cleft guarding while Arlan went ahead invisibly to scout. A few more gnolls and spiders attacked but were beaten off. When Arlan returned, the party retreated back to the entrance to the woods, where a host of spiders jumped them from above. All the spiders were killed and the party escaped back to the road, where the elf told them that he had warned them.

Whatever is in there is still there. But some powerful magic users and some even more powerful fighters will be needed to take them on.
