A young boy coomes of age

  • _Raine has grown up knowing city life. He is the son of a widow, recently parted from his late father, a former mercenary turned grave digger who put down his shovel and again took up his sword to help the besieged town of Norwick, and who fell in the defense of the people there. After his fathers death, he and his mother were taken in with his aunt in the city.

He has watched from the ramparts of Peltarch as refugees and orphans have filtered into the city, seeking the safety of the stone walls and the kindness of strangers.

His young eyes linger out over the tops of the trees as he stands upon the southern most battle rampart of Peltarch, surveying the distant landscape and meditating about the war. How many more orphans will this war create, he wonders.

Clutched in his hands is a silver medallion, with the symbol of scales gripped by a boned fist. This holy symbol of Kelemvor and a few gold coins were all that had been left to him by his departed father.

Raine worked a couple odd jobs around the docks of Peltarch, delivering bills and other tasks until he could buy a longsword and medium shield.

Being filled with zeal for battle, and following in the path of his father, Raine set out to visit his fathers grave in the Kelemvor grave yard and speak to the knights there.

Passing the twin towers at the bridge, a bowman gave him a firm warning of the dangers on the road ahead, but Raine steeled his heart and held tight his symbol of Kelemvor, for he knew his journey had balance, and he grimly faced the possibility of death ahead him like a man. "Death is natural", Pah used to say. "You will face it many times in this life, but pray you taste of it not until it is your time to be weighed and judged, and then place your faith in knowing that death is not an end but a beginning, not a punishment but a necessity. There is no deceit in death, nothing concealed, nothing chaotic. Death is an orderly process.." remembering his fathers words to him while he walks the long road.

Up ahead, the gates to the temple open up and the words from one of the knights speaking firmly to Raine, "Welcome.. your mother wrote to us saying we should expect you. Come in. Let us say prayers of remembrance for your father…"

The gates close, and the wisps of smoke from the flames of war in the south blanket the area in a grey haze of forbidding._
