Horses, Riding, Mounted Combat, and Jousting

  • Horses
There are horse traders in Peltarch and Norwick. You will find significant price differences in these locations. Peltarch sells War Horses. Norwick sells regular. You select a horse on display by talking to it, then talking to the seller. This will spawn a horse. This is your horse. You may only ride your own horse. - Buying a new horse when you already have one will overwrite your current horse (the shop will warn you). Paladins gain a summonable mount at level 5. They can have a purchased horse in addition to their paladin steed.

    Riding
In order for a PC to ride a horse, the horse menu must be used. The horse menu is located under "special abilities" in the radial menu for your PC. (This is the leftmost submenu.) The lower three options of this submenu are for the three classes a character can have, in order from left to right. If you don’t see a horse icon in one of these slots you will be able to access it from your class menus. You may ‘individual mount’ or ‘individual dismount’ from here. Target the command on your horse.

You will find many areas that your horse won’t be willing to go with you. You will generally get a message telling you this/be automatically dismounted. You will need to manually remove the horse from your party to proceed. To do this you use the horse’s radial menu. “More actions” at the top left, then ‘remove from party’ at the bottom right. You can re-add your horse to your party simply be talking to it.

    Hitching Posts
After removing it from your party, the horse will stay where you leave it. Horses are fragile and very likely to get killed if they enter combat. Try and keep them safe. Hitching posts allow you to "store" your horse and can be found throughout Narfell. You must be dismounted to use a hitching post. Your horse will not hang around the hitching post visually (or actually) for sake of sanity and safety. Keep in mind, once a horse is "hitched" it can be retrieved from ANY hitching post regardless of where you hitched it. On server reset, you may pick up your horse at any hitching post.

    Paladins
In order to unsummon your mount, simply use the summon mount feat again. There is no duration for the summon, but you may only summon it once per day (meaning if you unsummon it, you'll need to rest to see it again).

    Mounted Combat Feat
Mounted combat feat is used to determine what items you can equip while mounted. Without the feat you cannot equip a shield or offhand weapon. There are some visual errors in the game that might allow you to keep a two-handed weapon equipped on the sheet, but you will not actually be using the weapon. They are too unwieldly to use from horseback.

Mounted combat feat reduces spell-casting penalty (while mounted) by 10.

Characters with the "Mounted Combat" feat are able to roam far and wide with their horses. Characters without the feat will find that there are a great many areas they can’t entice their horses to go with them to.

    Ride Skill
Ride skill grants you +1 Dodge AC bonus for every 5 points of ride on your character sheet while mounted. If you do not have the mounted combat feat, you get no AC bonus from the ride skill whatsoever.

    Jousting
Narfell has jousting lists in Peltarch. You may use your own horse, your paladin mount, or a specially provided jousting horse. To play firstly mount and take a lance from the Jousting Lance Rack. Then you and your opponent should each click one of the Jousting Registers. Once you're both ready the engine will take care of the pass. Your jousting skill depends on Mounted Combat Feat, Ride Skill, and Base Attack Bonus. The result will be announced automatically to the crowd. If your lance breaks get a new one. If you wish to resign from or cancel a joust please click the 'Jousting Info' board.

If you're encumbered do not joust - it breaks the system.
