I just downloaded IRC, but for whatever reason cannot get into the Narfell channel with everyone else. Could someone please post a step by step way I could get onto IRC so I can talk with everyone through that and be able to stay in character better in game? I am not great at these things myself.

The security concern referenced is because the java chat application uses an old version of Java that (if the application were malicious) could do bad things.
Since we know what the application is, not an issue.

I've been using the Java version since I started playing on Narfell, and I've never had a problem with it.
November, don't worry about that "security concern". I set those messages to never show again, and I've never had any security problems. As far as I'm concerned, those messages are just a result of Vista being…Vista. shakes fist

The Java IRC client is REALLY fickle, but it works if you're desperate.

The Java one has a few issues for some people it seems though at times. I personaly get a "The applications digital signiture has an error" then asks if i whant to run it, if i do i get "Java has discoverd application components that could indicate a security concern" Now i do get on if i run anyway and ignore the security concern, though im not sure if i should ignore it…

There is also a chat button at the top of the page here, that launches a java client that may work for you (I am using it now)

Depends on your client… but first and foremost, make sure that the server you're logging into is irc.darkmyst.org.
Then join #Narfell.
