María's class

  • Elva jolts awake and listens to Ronan with tired and slightly sad eyes, when he gets up and leaves she straightens herself out…but finds herself slouching and laying on her desk again...

  • While the attending students prepare to inform him of the lessons they've been taught, Ronan casually heads on over to Elva's desk… arms folded in his robes. When he arrives, he kicks the desk to jolt her awake, looking down at her. If she wakes up, he says:

I hope the dream was not pleasant. If so, continue sleeping at home and do not waste your time here if you're not wanting to listen and learn. No one is forcing you to be here, young lady..

He then returns to the front for all to see him..

  • Elva says nothing, still snoozing on her desk

  • In light of Maria's absence, I will substitute for her in the mean time.

    Ronan says

I am a professor at Spellweaver. If that is acceptable to everyone, we can begin as soon as possible. Maria's methods may be different from mine, so I will ask you students what you have gone over so far. Maria may go over this particular lesson again when she returns, though hearing different opinions may benefit you students in the long run.

So then, who would like to catch me up?

  • Faide takes a seat beside the snoozing wizard, placing his bookbag on the table before him. He smiles and nudges Elva to wake her up.

"I don't think we're having class today Elva. Would you like to compare notes and go over what we have learned instead?"

  • Professor Buttergarden shows up for Maria's class, then seems concerned when she doesn't show up.

    Buttergarden:
Where is Maria? We're only on the second circle for goodness sakes, and she's late! Has anyone seen her? Check the library. Check the bath house. Check Hemrod's shop. Where is that woman?

  • Elva stays, even when everyone starts to leave, after a few more hours she falls asleep on her desk

  • Next class everyone is waiting for María, but she doesn't seem to arrive…they wait and wait, some people wait for an hour, but María is nowhere to be seen, and noone seems to be able to tell where did she go.

  • "Um….yes I have....but I dont want to wake anyone up once I reach the beds...."

  • Blinks Have you considewred using a simple countwrip of light to help you in the towewr…?

  • "Darkvision has other um…more practical uses as well....Its helped in the tower...when its dark and I have to walk down lots of stairs....b-but See Invisibility is also useful...

  • Nods quietly at her good spells indeed. But do tell me, what's mowre common, to be able to see in the magical dawrnkess, which you can see and know it's thewre, owr to see invisible cwreatuwres that might be stalking?

  • //Ice Dagger was changed from its original effect

Here it is taken from the build notes.

    @931f3dd14b:

Ice Dagger will now do splash damage (1), but still offers a reflex save. Splash damage will round down to zero if saves are made.

    _Elva raises her hand

Um…Invisibilty....because it makes you unseen....Balagarns Iron Horn...because it can knock down people who are surrounding you...and let you make a get away....Lesser Dispell....so you can strip magic off enemy mages...and um...Ultravison....so you can see in darkness...._

  • _María reaches for her staff and starts walking towards the door, motions the students to follow her. She goes to the spellweaver's yard and then asks his apprentice Kyan to summon a slaad, she summons some elemental herself and makes both summons stay one near the other.

She casts an icedagger spell on the slaad, and it only affects the slaad, not even scratching the elemental, not even by a bit._

I don't know what spell awre you talking about. But I tell you, as I just pwroved, that the ice daggewr does -not- affect mowre than one cwreatuwre.

//So it says the description and so it happens when tested on creatures. So that's how it works…//

After that , she motions Kyan to unsummon the slaad, doing herself the motion to unsumon the elemental, after which she leads the group back inside

Vewry well. This solved, let us move to the next ciwrcle.

Who can tell me which would be the fouwr second ciwrcle spells one should have?

  • Faide looks up from his notes. Blue eyes focused on Maria.

"Miss Maria, the ice dagger spell does in fact effect more than one target. Should you set a chair in the middle of the room incircled by four other chairs. The main chair will be struck by the knife, while the others will be hit by the shards of the knife upon impact."

  • Thing is, the ice daggewr is elemental damage, which is something many cwreatuwres can absowrb, while magical damage caused by magic missile is something that can't be blocked, except maybe by one owr two cwreatuwres. Also, the wrange is fawr mowre lawrge by the second.

I dont know who have you seen using the icedaggewr, but it's effects only affect one single tawrget, just like the magic missile, except the lattewr ones do mowre damage than the fiwrst…

  • Ducking in, the engineer crouches by Elva and does a lame trick with a silver coin behind her ear, a slight chuckle as he looks up and continues to listen quietly to the class. peering over at Elva's books and any notes…

Aye, Color spray is a darned handy spell… though I daresay I'm more fond of ice dagger than magic missile, in the right occasion its lack of range is made up for by its icy shrapnel harming nearby targets.

  • María looks at the merchant for a moment, then shakes her head lightly

I nevewr said thewre's no othewr useful spell in this ciwrcle. This spell selection is based on the assumption that the castewr can cast spells fwrom othewr ciwrcles. The spells you mention awre useful, but let me explain to you why they awre not in the list.

Easiest one to discawrd. Scawre. Scawre will affect only weak cwreatuwres, if you fight, fowr example, a bugbeawr owr gnoll owr even the stwrongewr goblins , it will have no effect whatsoevewr. So it's use is limited, vewry limited. And, thewre's a fouwrth ciwrcle vewrsion of this spell, that not only affects all cwreatuwres regawrdless of powewr, but it affects as an awrea of effect, causing -many- enemies feawr with just one shot.

Colowr spwray is useful, disabling youwr oponent fowr a showrt pewriod of time is always handy, yet it's easy to wresist it's spawrkling stun. Not only that, but the spwray is hawrd to contwrol and it's vewry common and easy fowr mages, specialy untwrained ones, to stun allies and enemies alike, owr in the wowrst scenawrio, stun only allies. And, thewre's many othewr disabling spells in othewr ciwrcles, such as the mentioned feawr, owr confusion, owr hold pewrson, etc…

Gwrease is usualy a good way to go to wretwreat, but as with the othewr spells, thewre's othewr bettewr options in highewr ciwrcles. The pwroblem with gwrease, is also that is a bit wrisky. Not once i've seen cawreless mages use gwrease in a fowrest, aftewr which they tossed a fiwreball, causing huge flames and buwrning half fowrest.

Horizikaul's boom as you suwrely know doesn't even disable. It just deafens youwr enemy temopowrawrily. I find that useless, since anyone can swing a swowrd owr shoot a bow even if deaf.

All in all, in conclusion, the issue with the spells you mention, is that they all have bettewr vewrsions of themselves in highewr levels, owr similawr vewrsions at least. Whewreas thewre's no bettewr spell fwro deflecting attacks than shield, no bettewr spell to enchant othewrs defenses than mage awrmowr, and so on.

  • Faide has been quiet all-through class number two, having taken a seat beside Elva. An ever present smile on his face as the class goes on. He scribbles down notes of each spell in detail as they are said. Flipping over to a new page as needed.

Bright blue eyes look towards the strange merchant curiously, giving his comments thought, before scribbling down the names of these new spells he's mentioned from the first circle.

  • Alexi who has been quiet till now, casually smooths his sleeves raising his hand in a casual manner till he is called upon. Why he is there is up to anyone to guess given he is a merchant after all.

Lady Professor Maria, I might be a bit biased and unschooled on this matter but it would seem to me that, those spells lean themselves to advantages only in the single fighting opportunities and such spells such as color spray, grease, Scare, and Horizikaul's boom would be more robust and useful in more situations as they disable your opponent so more options are available to you in case things turn sour where as the others you mentioned seem to be hinging upon success on the first try. Perhaps you can provide insight into this?
