Duncan Hulond, a Knight in training
-
His first test, at age 6, was to walk the through the serf fields and heal an injured peasant. This test was to prove that Lathander was with him, and that his kindness extended further than those of Noble blood. His tests continued for two years. His father, a nobel of the Dale Lands, was a priest of Lathander. He dreamed that his son would follow in his footsteps and preach in Lathanders name for several years. Duncan however, could never fulfill this dream. At age 8, he was sent to live with a Lord Folilir, a Human Knight of Lathander, and was then given the title of Page. He spent the next 6 years or so Training with combat dummies, wrestling and taming horses, while learning to ride them with skill. When not in battle training, Duncan would spend all his hours learning. He was taught by several instructors on the topics of reading, scribing. The lady of the castle would teach the page to sing and dance and mostly important, how to behave in a Kings court. His manners and charming charisma had made even the hardiest of battle maidens blush. His Lord would oversee his training and give his advise and tips on how be be smart in battle. Duncan followed every word of his Lord, as he saw him as an Immortal being sent by Lathander himself. At age 16, he was given a sword by his Lord, and very sturdy, polished, well crafted Longsword. His duties to his Lord offered many physically testing tasks. He would dress him in his armor, dress his horse for battle, as the years progressed, he eventually would train against his Lord in nobel games. They would fight with wooden swords, learning the quickness and strategy in close ranged combat. They would also fight on there horses, to learn the balance needed when swinging at a grounded opponent. Days after Duncan's 21st birthday, he and his Lord set out for travel. They'd thought to be gone only 6 months. They traveled North , Duncan would walk and carry camp supplies, while his Lord sat atop his traveling horse. As they passed through Cormanthor, they fought many bandits and roming tribes of primitive men. They reached The Moonsea, and paid a man who owned a rather large boat to carry on east, passed the Earthspur Mountains…Into Narfell.
His Lord had spoken of the great land of Narfell for many years of Duncans life. The Light of Lathander would lead him there, he would tell his squire. Duncan had known better than to ever question the motive of his Lord, so he followed blindly with his faith in Lolilir greatly outnumbering his doubts. The Great city of Peltarch had harbored a Knightly order that his lord so vigorously wished to meet. This information however, had never met Duncans ears. They sailed on the river east towards Narfell for a week straight. The horse began to act wreckless, and the squire too had begun to lose his sealegs. The boat carried on untill it hit a fork, the captain had asked Folilir which path to take. Folilir looks up at the bright sky, and responded: "North". As the ship sailed north, it passed into the boaders of Damara. The sailor ported at a small town known as Trail's End and told the two travelers that they had to walk to Narfell, the northern pass leads to The great glacier, and the boat they sailed on was rather large, however not a seafaring ship. The Knight had given a look, that the squire hadn't seen in his 12 years of apprecticeship, a look of uncertainty. The two resupplied and traveled South East along the road that left the town. After days of walking, Duncan had started to lose faith in the quest. He asked his Lord, Why is it we travel to Narfell? You've a home, land, peasant farmers, what could be there that is so desire by such a nobel man. The Knight steadied his horse to a halt. He turned to Duncan as spoke: "My dear boy, Lathander has given you such gifts, and still you cannot see the radiance of his grace. We go to Narfell to find an order of Knights who accept Lathander's faithful. I have recieved a scroll with the Orders name, and I hope we can make a new life for you there, as a Knight." These words were spoken, followed by silence as the walking continued. It was a day later, back on the road that would eventually lead them to their destination. The two traveled in silence as usual. Keeping a keen eye on the surrounding woods, tall grass, large puddles, anything that could be used against them in an attack. They made their way into a clearing. The surrounding fields were tilled, and dirt flooded the farthest point. They kept to the road and continued their path when stopped by a turned wagon. The broken chassi littered the road, disabling it's use. Duncan had examined the wagon, finding no survivors or anything of practical use. They continued around the wreckage having to cross a large hill to end up on the other side of the road. They climbed the hill, an exhausting feat for the squire loaded with equipment. He asked his Lord if they could rest for a moment, the Lord being a kind nobel, allowed Duncan to sit and rest. The squire unloaded, and fell fast asleep under a large oak. He awoke some time later, the sun had set and his Lords horse tied the tree. Folilir was nowhere to be seen. Duncan snapped up, lit his torch, and began calling out for Folilir. He walked few steps, the range of the torches light had brought forth the image of a dead man. The man, laying cold and still was armored from head to toe, his wooden large shield lay a couple yards away. Duncan ran to the body, looking around for signs of what could have killed such a might warrior. Duncan stripped the body, and ran back to the horse to drop off the armor, before going back to retrieve the body. When he returned to the scene, the body was gone. No traces again of the Knights malevolent enemy. Panicked, Duncan loaded the horse, and rode off southeast as fast as the horse would ride. Two days later...the knightless squire arrived in Norwick, no friends, no mentors, and only the gold and equipment his Lord had carried. He hopes to recieve his Knighthood, and find the ones his Lord was searching for.
