KingCreeper - Diego Mariano
-
The merchant class of Amn, some say that's where all the power is. Mind you - they're probably right; at least if wealth translates to power. With all the bribes and underhanded takings it's not difficult to get at least that impression. Diego's family, the Marianos of Crimmor, were not so high up the ladder of wealth and power, although their strength was rising and new trade agreements had been achieved. His father had become a banker in the city and much of the outsiders' wealth passed through his hands; there was always a large income just from the interest of that enterprise - nevermind the textiles that his mother and sister, and aunts (and so on) sold, and the horses his uncle raised and sold to the passing caravans. It was a good life for young Diego Mariano. He could drink wine, and good ale - and ride a fast horse, and usally what women he chose to lay with. He wanted for little, and he spent much. But that was the way of the Amnian merchant sons, and this particular rake.
It was perhaps on a whim, that he came to leave the city behind. He gave a lavish farewell party and was almost tempted to stay by a very fine young woman. But his mind was made up, and the ale had made him bold! He left an hour before sunrise on his beautiful black steed.
Of course… nobody ever told Diego just how broad the world really is. He laughed a few regions off, his ample wealth paid for fine accomodation - food, company. He had plenty of time for leisure and bathing, but every day he'd ride off again - and to him, this was the very spirit of freedom and adventure; Diego was loving it! At least, until he came to distant places where gold wasn't the price of everything. It became common for him to have to barter his fine things just for the provisions he'd need to continue - or even just for the night. His stylish cloak barely kept the wind off of him, but at least his pack was getting lighter. It took several months of this, trading off things of fine silver - rings, his amulet. Beads of exotic stone. It was the last leg of his journey to nowhere (which would turn out to be Peltarch) when it came down to two choices, he could barter his sword for a week of provisions and leave himself utterly defenseless - or find some other means of paying. The men who were selling the supplies had a good laugh to themselves, but they weren't totally unkind - and gave him a month or so's worth of supplies; in trade of his fine horse.
Diego still had some coin, very little compared to what he'd left home with; but enough in this place of relative civilization for reasonable lodging. And now his adventure for wealth and fame begins in the Narfell regions...
