Boigan the Clanless
-
Character name - Boigan
Player name - hiram
This is the history of how Boigan, bereft of a last, or Clan name by virtue of his parentage, came to leave the fellowship of his own kind. Boigan is the bastard son of a rape victim, his mother having been enslaved by a family of black dwarves, treated like a plaything by the sons of the clan elder and only escaping by the judicious use of herbs to feign her own death after a particularly brutal encounter. Later, when left to rot or be eaten by scavengers, she managed to keep herself alive until able to make her way back to her home settlement. Unfortunately, the lovely young Dwarven woman who had been taken while gathering herbs (she was an apprentice Herbal Healer by profession) was gone, and a wild haired, slightly mad woman was what returned. It is a testimony to her tenacity that she was able to not only live through the ordeal, but to bear the child that resulted.
Unfortunately, her home settlement was not inclined to be liberal in their acceptance of a mad hag and her spawn of the hated black clans, and were less than gracious when she delivered Boigan into the world. In the dialect of her home settlement, "Boigan" translates into "Tenacious", and is one of the attributes of what is considered to be a "good" Dwarf. She and her black son were given a log hut up the mountain slope from the settlement, some starter seeds and a few goats to live on, and though not totally excluded from society, were thereafter treated by the settlement elders as barely tolerated reminders of their own iniquities.
Thus Boigan grew up without a sense of belonging, learned to fight for his dignity and to defend the honor of his mother's loss and sacrifices, and when his mother left this veil of tears soon after his coming of age, he conveyed her to the gods with grace by cremating her in the burning cabin, took what little provisions were available and walked away, vowing to find folk of any race who were able to see past his skin and accept him for the worthy person he tried to be.
Trained by his mother in the attitudes of honesty, trustworthiness and social tolerance, but infused with an intolerance of bigotry, abuse of innocence and dishonesty it fell to him to make his way in the world as a wandering arm-for-hire. With no other skills beside some basic healing techniques, he worked at providing labor and eventually mercenary protection for traveling traders until he was able to acquire his own axe and armor, then he set out to find some kindly folk to satisfy his need for community and acceptance. Thus he arrived in and became a citizen of Norwick and, unaware of it himself at first, began his career as champion of the weak and the spiritually noble in the world.
