I've ne'er had children before, but aye, I've given life.
Maybe not the kind that breathes, no. But life nonetheless has been forged from this mind.
I am a creator. I have built with mah own two hands things that would bewilder even the most dazzling o’ mages. I’ve never been mistaken for the most brilliant man. In fact, I would say I be rather average at most forms of learnin’, be they math, tactics, readin’ or speakin’ languages and the sort. But somehow… when I’m given a pile o’ metal and stone, and a hammer and chisel to forge the gears of life with, it all just comes together in mah mind… and therefore on mah anvil.
I am the son of a blacksmith. Spent years workin’ mah fingers to the bone on mah dad’s forge, burnin’ away layer after layer of skin, pounding metal splinters into my bones, but I loved e’ry goddamned minute of it. When a traveling priest of Gond come to mah little village on the outskirts of Waterdeep, and I found out I were old enough to apprentice at the High Holy Crafthouse o’ Inspiration, under the watchful eyes and hands of the Lord o’ the Smith’s himself… Ah thought I were gonna faint. But mah dad raised a tougher man ‘an ‘at, an’ I ain’t about to let ‘im down.
I spent the years of my life from 13 to 28 workin’ as an apprentice under one of the Wonderbringer’s most talented clergy, a fella by the name of Clayton Hammerstone. Clay treated me well ‘nough, and taught me damned near everything he knew. There ain’t a thing that can be said against the man, far as ah’m concerned, he’s a damned saint. Clay were commissioned to build the guardians o’ the temple. Huge mechanized stone constructs, the size of 4 or 5 men. And I were the one who got the privilege of helpin’. 15 years I spent given life to metal and stone. 15 years I watched mah children come to life under the hammer, and serve their purpose for a year or two afore they were scrapped for the next set of improved guardians. Watchin’ somethin’ you put so much time into be thrown to the wayside like that just ain’t easy to do, friend. Ah’ll tell ya that right now.
On the side, I learned mah fair share of alchemical recipes durin’ me studies. Became able to use substances that frightened other people just to touch. Alchemist’s Fire, Flasks of Acid, Tanglefoot Bags… not only did I know how ta use these things, I knew how to create ‘em. Though this ain’t sayin’ much. Those are all simple crafts, that are simple ta create, and simple ta use. It were only recently that I began delvin’ into the dangerous stuff. Smokepowder-powered explosions and the such. And it were recently I began learning of a man named Strauss. Said to have had breakthrough after farkin’ breakthrough in Alchemy in a land called Narfell.
Needless to say, Ah decided it were time for me to go on a bit of a trip, learn what I could about and from this Dentin Strauss fella.
