Tricks and Shadow
-
The brilliant golden spires of the city of Silverymoon grew dark as the daylight faded into the dusk. The commons area began to empty, merchants moving about, gathering up their wares and locking their carts, leaving only the shadows to talk about their day.
The merchant known as "Ham" glanced about nervously as he packed in his sweet smoked hams and the smoked pheasant he was peddling that day.
He finished up, looked around again, and chuckled to himself. The click of the lock sounded loudly as he locked it. "Some poor ol' ghost ya be thinkin' of ya ol' salt-dog" he said to himself. "Nothin' 'ere but shadows an' sleep." He wandered off to one of the local taverns for a meal and a drink.
The moon rose in the sky as the cart sat in the darkness of the its stall, shadows its only companions.
One of the shadows stirred, seemingly moving nearer the cart…a form barely visible in it....it was slight of build....and quick. Around the back of the cart the shadow went, scurrying up onto the roof of the small cart, slipping its arms over the backside of the cart to access the lock that had been placed back against the wall of the stall.
A tell-tale "click" was heard as the tumblers were opened.
Silence and Shadows.
"Time for a lil' bit of revenge you old ham-hock.." Elradrith said to herself with a coy smile.
She slid into the space to the back of the cart, opening the door to access the goods that were kept inside. Peering inside, she saw the succulent hams that were so popular this time of year.
"Hmm…smart of him to keep his fat hands about his coin..or else I might actually buy one of these hams from him tomorrow." she whispered under her breath. Reaching into her belt pouch, she removed a small vial and uncorked the stopper to it, shaking the contents over the hams. A fine powder settled upon the meats.
"Annnnd that should do it…." She closed the door to the cart, relocked it and disappeared back into the darkness.Silence and Shadows.
The sun rose up, burning the grey fog back as the city of Silverymoon woke and began to move about their day-to-day business.
After a bit of time, the merchant came out of the tavern he had spent his coins in that night prior. He waddled over ot his cart, and tugged it free of it stall, smiling about another day of selling his wonderful goods and making more coin.
He opened the lock.
He opened the door.
….and he began to place his hams out onto the racks that hung from the stall.Ham lit his pipe, waiting for some customers to finally get their lazy backsides moving along and to purchase his wondrous meats.
The crowds began to form, milling about this way and that, pawing over the cloths, the fine Hin Pipes, all the goods that the common's merchants had to offer them.
"BEST HAMS IN ALL OF TORIL- RIGHT HERE! GET THEM NOW…TASTY HAMS FER GOOD FOLK!!" the merchant barked out.
Some of the people gathered at his stall. and of course there were the usual questions about how much, how long they had been cured, that sort. Ham of course did his best to paint the meats in a wonderful light, telling of how they had been treated and cured in a secret process he had learned from some old wizard.
A young Elven woman spoke up, ordering one of the ready to eat ones he had in the back. She payed him the coin for it, and drew her dagger, slicing a small piece off the succulent ham, revealing the sickly green meat underneath the cured outer layer.
The smell was horrid.A small boy there cried as the scent was caught in his nose, pleading with his mother to not make him eat the "nasty man's ham." He promised he'd clean his room.
The elven woman gasped, dropping the ham in the cobblestones there, and as it hit the ground, it "splattered". "What in the nine hells are you trying to pull merchant?!" Her copper eyes narrowed as she looked at the now shocked merchant.
"I….they..." he stammered.
"You had better be giving me my coin back or the watch will hear about this!" She shouted loudly enough to gather the attention of the others in the commons.
Ham quickly fished up some coins from his pouch, fumbling as he did, dropping a few on the ground, and handed the woman back her coin.
The woman stalked off at a brisk pace, clearly annoyed at the entire ordeal.
Ham was in the throng of what should have been happy customers, and the woman let a pixie grin cross her face. "Next time, you'll be careful who you cheat merchant." Elradrith whispered to herself as she walked down the avenue.
