A Hound's Tale

  • "So, you want to know why I am here in Narfell? Alright, well if you have the time to sit for a tale, then maybe mine will entertain you…"

Nadi shifts a bit, lowering the hood of her cloak to her shoulders, letting her hair fall loosely.

"It all began I guess in the the Cormyrian capital, Suzail. Ya see, I'm what ya be callin' a Hound…given orders and contracts by tha Merchants of Suzail to return "certain individuals of ill repute"...at least tha's what my official job is fer them.
"Well, anyhow...one day, while I was checking over some of my writs, I get a summons to go see the current head of some guild I 'ad never heard of 'afore.
When I get there, there's this little Halfling, or Hin if you prefer, sitting all right pretty in some furs and whatnots, an' he goes on to tell me about how this piece o' work named Malrik has taken somethin' a his."

Nadi orders a glass of red from the wench in the tavern, and sits back a bit, kicking her boots up onto the table.

"So, since mine is not to question o' those of purple blood, I take his little writ, thinkin' tha' it'd be a simple retrieval job. Well, I suppose ya can figure it wasn't if I am here, an' not there, eh?"

She grins and accepts the wine from the wench, tipping her.

"Well, it turns out, tha' this character ain't no thief….he's an assassin. What he "took" from the little Hin happened ta be his wife. Apparently, the little lady was some sort of courtier or some such... Once I hear a this, I'm thinkin' it'd be best ta not be involved ya know, being Crown business an' all."
"So I head back ta where I met the little merchant....ta tell him I can't be takin' his writ. Can't find him...in fact, no one can, not the Watch, nobody. They look fer a bit, maybe a week, thinking tha' he'd been tha victim of foulness or some such. Nobody finds any sign of the Hin."

Nadi takes a sip of the wine, making a slightly sour face.

"I figure, tha' since we can't find this lil Hin, tha' I might as well go ahead and act like I am looking fer this Malrik fool. So, I do some sniffin' about the city. Nothin'."
"After a few weeks o' not finding anything, I decide to let the writ cool, so, I'm off doing this other bit o' work when this man, all hairy an' obviously not a Cormyrian, comes up to me an' hands me a small parcel…not much bigger 'an a scrollcase. He looks rather intimidatin' ta anyone around, so I soon find myself alone, in tha middle of a city square, me, him, an' the scrollcase. I open it, read what is written there, and simply walk off...heading back to my inn to get my things."

Her face falls a bit sad a moment, then goes back to a calm look.

"What tha' note said, was that two of my pups…tha's what we call young Hounds tha' aint been away from trainin' long, well, they'd been found slain in the town of Icelace, way to tha north...in Damara. Killed by a skilled blade it was said."
"So, I make my way north an' east, to investigate this...its no easy feat to take two Hound's unawares, Pups or not."
"I find that apparently, there 'ad been a string of murders through the way there too...the suspect matching tha' piece o' dung's description. Whether or not he meant ta make this personal, I don't know, nor do I care. So, I start trackin' him again....an' I got as far as this little town a yers before his trail went cold. So...if ya see a man lookin' tan an' outta place fer this area....likely with a beard...come an' find me. Ya can even tell him tha' an "old friend" is lookin' fer him."

Nadi finishes the wine, sets the glass on the table, drops a few coins, and leaves.
