Unsung Ballad of Porty de Waals (because it doesn't rhyme)

  • Here follows a brief history of young noble Porty de Waals. Harken!

'twas a fine day when young Porty did think to put his plan into action. The young noble's son had been sent forth by his father, the Lord de Waals (who owned a small keep in the middle of the Western Heartlands) to study under the tutelage of a mage, for the usage of magicks was a respectable practice, and Lord de Waals did not wish his son to become as those of common stock, such as the soldiery and farmers that were his vassals.

The young de Waals had studied most astutely for three years, learning the minor magics that his master deigned to teach him, before boredom got the best of the young wizard, and he thought to bring a little more spice into his life. Studying intently through the older mage's books of geography and legend, he found many references to the mystical Lost Isle of Hoolu, a small island said to be populated only by delicious fruit trees, tame herdbeasts, and a tribe of women who had not yet discovered the secrets of crafting clothing.

Thinking to travel to the mystical isle, he tried to discreetly arrange ship transportation, only to discover that no sailor in this day and age had charts that showed his location, and even if they did, it would cost him more than he had to get there. But young Porty applied his intellect to the problem, and quickly discovered a far more efficient solution.

Poring over the books, he pieced together a perfect description of the island, one so vivid in his mind he felt he could paint it in a picture and then jump through and touch it. Stealing up to his master's study in the dead of night, when sane men were asleep, he stole from him a scroll of Teleportation, that he might transport himself to the Isle and while away his days in perpetual happiness evermore.

However, the young and impetuous noble, in his haste to travel as soon as possible, forget to check every detail of the spell, and despite his great intellect, he miscast the spell in a significant fashion. Intending to arrive with his feet on warm beach sand and welcoming ladies waiting to bring him to their tents, he instead found himself suspended in the air several metres above a snow bank in the middle of a blizzard.

After crawling to civilisation, he discovered that he was a very long way off course - he had transported himself to the frozen lands of Narfell…
