Foul weather

"I asked the Grapevine to start rationing their supplies, but it seems someone is eating them out of house and home every evening… all but the peas...

I hope folks in Norwick like peas..."

Telli sighs and goes about her meditating and praying over the field for the evening. Once morning comes Dwin is given a note from one of his gold cloaks with the following inscribed…

    @30e2360720:

    _**"Dear Dwin,

Please join me out by da fields dis mornings… Telli wanna invitedededs yuhs ta takedededs parts in dis mornings rituals in da fields we pickededs outs dis mornings...**

If Dwin does not show Telli goes about her business as normal blessing the next field, however if he does show she goes on as follows…

"Glads yuhs coulds makededs its Dwinnie... Telli wantededs ta invitededes yuhs outs.... since yuh talkedededs abouts da altar and erectings ones... thoughts yuhs shoulds be aparts a dis next rituals...

Know Dwinnie not always tink a da words he says... Telli likedededs dats sometimes toos... buh dose words abouts some'un eatings too much in da Inn... dey hurts... and Telli know yuh juss kiddings... buh stills... would really appreciate it if yuh went through da rituals wid Telli todays so you not only know what Telli going through ta do Chauntea's will dis day....buh so yuh can also keeps any folks off me back if dey starts boderings me's....cause yuh'll undastands juss how gruelings and hard dis jobs is on da mind...and…body."

*Telli motions him along and from seven in the morning till nine the pair lay out a mixture of grain, seeds and herbs. Telli does the majority of the praying although she allows opportunities for him to chime in if his heart so feels led to do so.

From nine to ten in the morning Telli shows Dwin how to sprinkle the oils and incense just right praying specifically for the needs of the farmland. Both in protection to endure the cold but also to endure the negative energy compelling cattle and others to turn into undead abominations against the town.

From eleven to one she shows Dwin how to pick up handfuls and where to toss them just right to help progress the blessing. No hand of grain, seed, herb, incense, and oil mixture is tossed without care. Each is measured out and tossed at specific angles and intervals.

From one to three in the afternoon Telli invites Dwin to waddle from the center in a clockwise direction as she scraps the butt of her scythe into the ground underneath their feet. They continue till they cover fourty feet in diameter.

Telli takes a swing from her canteen and motions it over to offer Dwin before waddling towards the center of the crop field again.

From three to six in the afternoon Telli offers up prayers of thanksgiving and protection to the fields as she's mindful to offer opportunities for Dwin to aid in his prayers as well.

From six to nine Telli and Dwin circle around the perimeter then counterclockwise circle back to the middle of the crop field. Telli uses the butt of her scythe to put in tics near the marks she made before.

From Nine to Twelve midnight Telli prays whispers of productivity and abundance.

From Midnight to three the pair walk the perimeter one final time to complete the markings and etches lefts in the dirt. As Telli gets to the last of the marks circling towards the middle again she contemplates screwing up one of the marks to show Dwin the futility of this blessing if its done on an empty stomach, or fatigued body and messed up. As she hovers her scythe over the ground looking to the nearby farmers she thinks it best to complete the hallowing for the evening so the farmers can continue their progress without any delay. The final mark goes in the dirt as the pair circle around to the middle of the crop section.

And from three to seven Telli offers up the final request for prayers and blessings in this short time of dire need.

Telli yawns looking Dwin over after a full days work is behind them.*

"...If one mark....juss one mark messededs ups....or on grain or seed or herb outta place... da whole durn tings gets messedededs ups....

so if it seem like Telli eatings a lot.... den Telli sorry Dwinnie... buh... Telli ain't gonna let no empty stomach or tired feet or noffings causedededs her ta messedededs ups.....not when yuh…dese farmers…and Chauntea herself is counting on Telli ta gettededs dis rights…."

Telli eyes him over intently looking a little more worn around the edges then normal.

"...Telli also didn't askedededs fer any pertections on eder a us...so yuh can gets an idear whats its feels likedededs ta do one a dese blessings... Telli askedededs fer blessings cause......wull....dat was one days work Dwinnie…. and all we blessededs was one field….one field ain't gonna helpedededs yuh feed yuhs folks in dis dire times…"

Telli motions around to the dozens of fields around and then to the only handful of ones she's blessed thus far for emphasis.

"So now... if yuh don't mindededs.... Telli's exhausted and hungry as hells... gonna go try ta snags six hours a sleeps or sometings and dens starts ups wid da nexts crops field...."

After a restful sleep Telli waddles back out to the fields to begin a hallowing blessing on the next field down the line as farmers begin to work more unified finally finding a routine to till and plant on the newly hallowed fields. Rumors circulate that Telli continues to use the Inn's baths offered by miss Scuttle. However, the Inn's storeroom is left undisturbed for the days to follow. Those who inquire to Telli's state and provisions quickly find out that she's requested a third Legionnaire to help assist her in the Norwick Hallow Farmlands Project. His sole responsibility is to make sure the Chauntea devote is amply stocked with water, food and snacks to help her keep to her task at hand. The provisions coming from Peltarch and the Legion towers personal storage bins..._

  • _Telli's efforts to encourage Chauntea to bless the crops and livestock are bolstered by the two strangers staying upstairs at the healing house of Kia and Tristina.

For the better part of a tenday, at dawn and dusk each night, the brown-robed pair give each farmer a clay disk with the image of a red rising sun carved into it. They lead the Norwickian farmers in reciting prayers of growth to the Earthmother, and prayers for sunshine and protection to the Morninglord. The clay disks are wrapped with straw and placed in the fields and pastures around Norwick for protection._

  • …at the suggestion of storing food, Dwin smiles and nods...

"I asked the Grapevine to start rationing their supplies, but it seems someone is eating them out of house and home every evening… all but the peas...

I hope folks in Norwick like peas..."

  • *Telli stands admists a field one afternoon whispering as farmers toil in the fields she's blessed so far. Those paying attention and inclined to blessings of divination notice Telli's change in blessings as the days pass. As day in and day out become more routine, she begins asking for blessings of barkskin, stoneskin, and energy buffer to combat the almost mocking cold breezes and harsh bitter snapping of the wind. The two Legionaries whom accompanied Telli to the farm lands seem to shimmer with blessings of elemental protection each day as they begin their task to offer aid to those farmers requiring it.

Any with keen enough eyes will note that the two legionaries sport ornate necklaces from Telli herself. The intricate pattern across the necklaces match Telli's and seem to draw the cold bitter wind into them as ice forms around the edge of the dangling orbs by the end of the day. Farmers are instructed to band together and help with the farming effort to prepare Norwick for this early winter. However, both legionaries are instructed by Telli one morning to be on the look out for farmers pushing themselves too hard and to inspect gloves regularly to avoid rips that might allow frostbite to set in.

Telli looks up one morning as she finishes tossing out her last handful of herbs, seed, incense, and oil mixture as a familiar dwarf strolls up to her to offer aid and encouragement.*

    @bf0d1677b4=Clan:

Lass, I can't thank you enough for this hard work. What can we do to help? Need anything?

I've decided that we'll build a shrine to Chauntea as soon as this has all passed. It will be built to your design, and in any location you choose. Tis the least we can do, and frankly, we shoulda done it long ago.

Telli smiles at the warm words and the thought of building another altar in Chauntea's name. Chauntea's teachings and Jerrick's reminder whisper across her ear as Dwin finishes his expression of gratitude. "Chauntea does not abore destruction outright Telli… but with destruction... there must be rebirth... it is only natural and in balance for something new to take the place of something destroyed... to deny that tenant of Chauntea is perhaps one of the worst follies." Oscura's farms were left to thrive, however thorns began to grow and the city had little need for Chauntea's grace within. Her altar all but collected dust and many neglected it. But in the altars somber fading a new one would be built and one to show Norwicks true nature. A nature to endure hard trials and to come back stronger and more abundant, a nature that showed that despite however mangled and damaged the surface got, its roots stood firm in solid ground. Many of these thoughts fluttered across Telli's vacant stare until she snapped out of it looking at Dwin.

"Dat'd be greats Dwinnie… an altar out here woulds be greats! We shoulds builds its nows... rader den laters... Not whens tings is goings goods... ands folks'll fergits da wonderfuls tings Chauntea dones... buh now... in da midst a hard times when da folks a Norwick need reminding dats ders someone outs ders dats cares whens der crops is dyings, witherings, and hurtings. Mebbe we cans gets Mr Z ta comes outs ta buildededs its while Telli prepares dese fields. He gots a fountain in his house wid blessededs water froms Chauntea herself. Would be a wonderfuls ting ta havedededs flowings in and throughs da altar ta da earth moder. Will yuh lookededs fer Mr Z... ain't seens hims around in a bits... sures coulds see's hims arounds here fer somes morals supports and a strongs back ta helpededs somes a dese weaker backed fellers dats comedededs ta helps.

Oh yuh... and ders anoder ting yuh can starts plannings... Telli ain't knows no numbers a how many folks yuhs gotta feed and how much dey normally eatededs... yuh should runs da numbers and starts organizing how much we needededs ta stores a dis harvests comings ups ta helps feed da entire town. Da worst case scenerio we don'ts killededs dis Hungry One we gonna needededs ta makedededs dis food lass fer a good long times... bestests case scenerios... we kills hims fer good... and... den we smacks dab inta winta wid a few harvests missedededs dis year....eder way.... it gonna be hardededs ta feed everyone if we don't starts plannings nows."

With that Telli begins her stroll around the field making her way around the border then circling into the center where she perches for some time whispering prayers of thanksgiving and kneeling until another friend waddles up to give her warm gratitude.

    @bf0d1677b4=Grivel:

"Telli, I applaud your efforts to aid these farmers. You do your Goddess proud. If there is anything you need from the Circle, please ask. Our main focus now is to end this problem of the Hungry One, which in itself will be a help to you."

Telli scraps some accumulated ice from her eyes as she squints watching the girl approach…

"Hey ders miss Malika... yuhs doing all yuhs can ta helpededs. Keep gaderings dats informations as ta da weaknesses and whereabouts a dat hungry'un... Mr Grag and I and a bunch a oders saws hims in Jiyyd da oders day... he's a big fark. Telli gonna keep on keepings ons out in dese fields till deys ready fer her ta movedededs ons... yuh keep doings whatcha doings and when da day comes ta strikedededs... lemme know and Telli'll offer her Scythe ta puts da cold bitter heartedededs bear ta his final chilly slumba...."

With a stern nod Telli goes back to whispering in the middle of the field as snow and ice begin to accumulate around her feet. Her necklace glowing bright as its taxed heavily by the early winter weather.

  • Malika watches from a distance the work being done by the tireless dwarf woman. Then she approches.
"Telli, I applaud your efforts to aid these farmers. You do your Goddess proud. If there is anything you need from the Circle, please ask. Our main focus now is to end this problem of the Hungry One, which in itself will be a help to you."

  • For the following weeks Telli sticks to a rigorous routine… In the morning she starts her day off with some whole grains and plenty of juice. She waddles the perimeter of her next farm objective as Norwick farmers are busy tending to the fields that were previously blessed. She sits in the middle of the crop field sprinkling circles of grain and seed around her before pulling out some vials of incense and oils sprinkling them atop the circles around her. Next she takes handfuls of the mixture tossing them out at different ranges whispering psalms of thanksgiving and hymns of fortitude on the blessed field. Finally she waddles the perimeter of the fields circling in till she's back where she began. With a thrust of her scythe handle into the soil she begins a soft chant until each Hallow blessing is complete. Though the task isn't physically demanding from what Telli's used to… the mental toll on her demeanor daunting. Those with enough divine knowledge can see that she prepares her mind for the task at hand each morning. Seeking blessings of strength, endurance, wisdom, and intelligence as she asks for blessings and aid. When the process grows past the point of exhaustion she whispers blessings of prayer and clarity as she continues along. Each night is spent enjoying a large steak and a pile of potatoes. Soon the Grapevine Inn servers know not to bother with the portions of peas Telli seems to always shove to the side of her plate at the end of the night. Audible sighs of relief fill the air within the bathing room as Telli amply takes up miss Scuttles offer for nightly baths.

  • Telli grins taking the pouch and grinning impishly

    "Danks der miss Scuttle..."

Telli dusts her thighs off as she waddles towards the promised bath one days worth of blessings finished. Those near the bathing area will note a loud groan and plenty of splashing heard until a comfortable position is found within the tub.

  • Marie comes out to the fields and passes a coin pouch to Telli with a smile before setting to work helping the farmers with the seeding process.

You know that you don't need to pay for things at the Grapevine Telli, you're already doing more than enough to pay your room and board.

Oh, and I've organised a nice warm bath for you tonight, as well as a big hearty meal for any who need it from the work here today.

  • The Chancellor is seen openly thanking Telli for her help, and even assisting with some of the heavier work that needs to be done.

'Telli, the Realm thanks ya… and to prove our thanks, we're all gonna show you how strong and resilient we Norwick-folk are! Your plans all make sense, and we're gona stick to 'em!

Anyone has any questions, you come to me, or go straight to telli here... but don't interrupt her hard work!

When this is all done, we'll have a feast in honor of both Chauntea and Telli! And I certainly hope that feast will offer lots of home-grown food!"

  • Sunlight creeps across the Grapevine Inn taunting Telli's eyelashes as she turns pulling a sheet over her head grumbling

    "Five more minutes...Oi..."

Just then a leg post snaps on the bed sending a corner crashing to the ground and our mass of a dwarf rolling across the wooden floor. Telli hops to her feet startled and clutching a slobbered on ragdoll.

    "...I'm up... I'M UP!...."

*muttering Telli dusts her thighs off and attempt to fix the bed only to discover it beyond her ability to repair. Rumors circulate that a generous donation for bettering bedding was left for the barkeep that morning.

Exiting the Inn Telli heads north digging in her side satchel looking for a chocolate pick me up only to find her bag with a hole in it. Whimpering to herself she becomes quite aware that this might in fact be the worst week of her life....

She greets some of the farmers and workers who have been working for the past few hours while she slept in. She stretches briskly before settling into one of the farming fields spending her first day trying to perfect the most comfortable position to endure a weeks worth of blessings.*

"...Dear Chauntea... please bless dis field.... makes its strongs... keeps its safe wid a hedge of pertections dat only yuh can offers... keeps dese deaders dead and don'ts lettededs anymores a dems nasty undeader cows shows ups... Dank yuh fer da grass and da trees and da veggies..."

Telli continues murmouring similar prayers of thanksgiving and pleads for aid as she strengthens the first farming field preparing it for the farmers diligent work the following morning.

  • *Telli smiles as she watches some of the more dire dispositions turn in the light of her plan. More somber though she whispers a prayer of thanksgiving to Chauntea as she waddles off to the Grapevine Inn for a bitter-sweet rest knowing tomorrows certain to bring a toll on her stout shoulders and countenance.

Telli sits down at one of the inns tables ordering a earthy meal filled with vegetables and pork. Smacking sounds trickle through the establishment until nothing is left where the stout dwarf sat but an empty plate with peas shoved to a corner of the plate and a large stack of coins to thank the waiter in question.

Snoring fills the halls outside Telli's room as she attempts to get the best nights rest she can. Despite her efforts she can't help but toss and turn well into the evening until she finally passes out dreaming of chasing pigs within some farmers stalls.*

  • The farmers seem to be greatly cheered by this, murmur their agreement, and go to work with the air of gloom and worry noticeably less.

  • ((Sorry for the delay, thanks for those being patient in this part of the storyline…))

Telli arrives in Norwick in the farming fields one afternoon. Two Legionnaire soldiers flank her sides dragging wheelbarrows of items behind them. As the bitter cold fights to slink down the back of her neck she stands there in her four foot by four foot stature and motions farmers, workers, laypeople and anyone generally worried by Norwicks recent weather shift over for warm words.

“Sorries Telli ain’ts been arounds da lass few weeks… many a yuhs come ta depend on Telli… Chauntea more… and Telli wanna be honests wid yuhs… fer da first times eva….”

The cold wind sends Telli’s pigtails flapping into her face as she pauses to brush the stalks of hair from her dirty features.

“…fer once Telli’s not juss jumpedededs inta sometings… Telli’s usedededs ta seeings danger and jumpings inta its… not dis times… I tooks yuhs worries folks ta Chauntea herself…and… she’s as worried as yuhs guys is…

Dis cold snaps… a results a dat Hungry One… dat farkings big polars bear of a demon fark… buh all he knows is cold and destructions… he nots stronga dens us… not stronga dens Norwicks… especially whens we all works togeders…

Here’s whats we gotta do’s…. Telli’s gonna be busy as hecks… and yuhs all farmers… Telli know yuhs hard workers too… buh we need ta works smarters… nots neccesarriles harders…

First ting first Telli gonna come by each one a yers farms and bless ems… gonna askedededs Chauntea fer blessings a ”Hallow” fer each farmers land…

    Hallow
    Evocation [Good]
    Level: Clr 5, Drd 5
    Components: V, S, M, DF
    Casting Time: 24 hours
    Range: Touch
Area: 40-ft. radius emanating from the touched point
    Duration: Instantaneous
    Saving Throw: See text
    Spell Resistance: See text

Hallow makes a particular site, building, or structure a holy site. This has four major effects.

First, the site or structure is guarded by a magic circle against evil effect.

Second, all Charisma checks made to turn undead gain a +4 sacred bonus, and Charisma checks to command undead take a -4 penalty. Spell resistance does not apply to this effect. (This provision does not apply to the druid version of the spell.)

Third, any dead body interred in a hallowed site cannot be turned into an undead creature.

Finally, you may choose to fix a single spell effect to the hallowed site. The spell effect lasts for one year and functions throughout the entire site, regardless of the normal duration and area or effect. You may designate whether the effect applies to all creatures, creatures who share your faith or alignment, or creatures who adhere to another faith or alignment. At the end of the year, the chosen effect lapses, but it can be renewed or replaced simply by casting hallow again.

Spell effects that may be tied to a hallowed site include aid, bane, bless, cause fear, darkness, daylight, death ward, deeper darkness, detect evil, detect magic, dimensional anchor, discern lies, dispel magic, endure elements, freedom of movement, invisibility purge, protection from energy, remove fear, resist energy@410bc4298b:

    Resist Energy
    Abjuration
    Level: Clr 2, Drd 2, Fire 3, Pal 2, Rgr 1, Sor/Wiz 2
    Components: V, S, DF
    Casting Time: 1 standard action
    Range: Touch
    Target: Creature touched
    Duration: 10 min./level
    Saving Throw: Fortitude negates (harmless)
    Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

This abjuration grants a creature limited protection from damage of whichever one of five energy types you select: acid, cold, electricity, fire, or sonic. The subject gains energy resistance 10 against the energy type chosen, meaning that each time the creature is subjected to such damage (whether from a natural or magical source), that damage is reduced by 10 points before being applied to the creature’s hit points. The value of the energy resistance granted increases to 20 points at 7th level and to a maximum of 30 points at 11th level. The spell protects the recipient’s equipment as well.

Resist energy absorbs only damage. The subject could still suffer unfortunate side effects.

Note: Resist energy overlaps (and does not stack with) protection from energy. If a character is warded by protection from energy and resist energy, the protection spell absorbs damage until its power is exhausted.

, silence, tongues, and zone of truth. Saving throws and spell resistance might apply to these spells’ effects. (See the individual spell descriptions for details.)

An area can receive only one hallow spell (and its associated spell effect) at a time. Hallow counters but does not dispel unhallow.

    Level: Drd 3, Plant 3, Rgr 3
    Components: V, S, DF
    Casting Time: 1 standard action
    Range: See text
    Target or Area: See text
    Duration: Instantaneous
    Saving Throw: None
    Spell Resistance: No

Plant growth has different effects depending on the version chosen.
    Overgrowth

This effect causes normal vegetation (grasses, briars, bushes, creepers, thistles, trees, vines) within long range (400 feet + 40 feet per caster level) to become thick and overgrown. The plants entwine to form a thicket or jungle that creatures must hack or force a way through. Speed drops to 5 feet, or 10 feet for Large or larger creatures. The area must have brush and trees in it for this spell to take effect.

At your option, the area can be a 100-foot-radius circle, a 150-foot-radius semicircle, or a 200-foot-radius quarter circle.

You may designate places within the area that are not affected.
    Enrichment

This effect targets plants within a range of one-half mile, raising their potential productivity over the course of the next year to one-third above normal.

    Plant growth counters diminish plants.

This spell has no effect on plant creatures.

Telli sighs audibly out her nostrils before resting her scythe into the dirt as fresh carvings of grain adorn her staff handle.

“Dis not gonna be easy folks… buh Chauntea herself gave Telli peace in her heart abouts dis plans… and if we all work togeder… no plan a destructions will reach anymore a dese crops afore nature intendededs…

Every’un gets whats equipment yuh needs nows…and wull starts bright and early tomorrow. Any questions?”

Telli leans on the scythe looking out among those gathered to make sure the plan hatched out is clear and concise. A certain air of leadership sparkling in her dopey lopsided eyes only reached by the guiding and direction of Chauntea herself..

  • _The weather gets still worse, and now strange attacks begin… undead animals attacking travelers in the wood and on the roads, and dead, frozen guards being hurled into town only to rise as zombies.

The local farmers are getting noticeably anxious._

  • _After staying in the office of the Chancellor for some hours, Meye has seen to come out escorted by dwarven guard.

The dwarf escorts Meye to the north gate of the town.

With faint, comfortable or even a bit arrogant, smile on her face she lays icy gaze of her cold blue eyes to those who look at her on her way to the north gate._

  • Danika has become an even rarer sight in town since the snows began. She's seen only on the paths between the south gate, the infirmary, the barracks, and back south again. When she returns to town a few days later, she is always weary-eyed from exhaustion and often injured.

Whenever she hears word of the woman speaking for the Frostmaiden, Danika absently clutches her necklace of ice-like glass shards.

  • _Another dwarf watches the armored dwarf and the female walk away. Reacting to some sign that was meant only for him, the dwarf puts down his ale and gets up slowly.

Nodding to the guards and the commoners he passes, he follows them, keeping a safe distance from the two._

  • Dwarf finds Meye talking to local people. Meye turns gaze of her sapphire eyes to the dwarf. Then a faint smile flashes in her face as she talks to dwarf

I see that even the wall of the greateste leaders cannot keep out the cold whispers that northern nights carry. Chancellor has heard the whispers, has he not?

She turns to people she was talking to and gives them slow nod

Thy have heard the warnings of the Icedawn I bringeth thee. I suggest thee to fall in thy prayers, before thy be praying them by coldened bodies of thy own children.

    she turns to dwarf again

    Now we may go.

Those nearby can hear Meye talking to dwarf all the way to the office with soft tone of voice. It seems like discussion considers about how cold such a fine armor can get in freezing blizzard and how ice cold armor can burn it's way through flesh severing limbs like a warm knife cuts the butter.

  • *a dwarf in a gold cloak and full armor asks Meye to accompany him to the Chancellor's office immediately. He makes it pretty clear that the only acceptable answer is "yes". *

  • _Perhaps as a macabre joke, a squad of tainted goblinoids sets up a catapult south of Norwick and for some time bombards the town with the frozen corpses of Norwick cattle killed in the blizzards. The cows, after landing with the sickening thud of dead meat, proceeded to rise as zombies and attack the citizenry.

Finally a group of adventurers sallied out the gates and destroyed the cow-hurling trebucket._
