The great city of Skuld is one of the oldest cities in Faerun, the shining jewel in the old and mighty realm of Mulhorand, the so-called "City of Eternity". A teeming, bustling metropolis, a fair majority of the people born there go on to live out their lives scarcely going beyond the City's great walls, and in a society of strict divisions between the lesser merchant and peasant classes, and the upper clergy and noble classes, for a child to be born impoverished almost always means they will surely die impoverished.
Remarkably however, this was not the fate in store for the urchin-born Kama Webber. Once every year, in the palace of the great Vizier who governs Skuld by the grace of Horus-Re and his noble priests, one hundred babes are taken into the palace grounds in their mangers, where they sleep in the starlight and warmth of the palace garden for the night. The child whose manger is shared by the sacred cat that shares the Vizier's home is taken away by the clergy of the great goddess Bast to be raised in their Temple, to live the privilegded life of a priestess.
These one hundred children come from the nobility of Skuld, their having the chance to even stay the night in the house of the Vizier is an honour to their parents, even if they are not chosen by the Goddess Bast. On the year Kama was born however, perhaps by accident, or perhaps simply because the Goddess tired of her Temple only choosing from among a select few, her manger somehow ended up among the others. This tiny twist of fate was to alter her life completely, for she was found the next morning with the sacred cat lounging comfortably alongside her in her manger, and the priestesses dutifully took her away to their Temple.
When it emerged that there seemed to be no family to be honoured for having their daughter chosen, questions were raised, but nobody could deny the choice of the great Bast. And so while Kama's life in the temple was undoubtably a comfortable one filled with providence and luxeries, it was also a clouded one, her uncertain birth and her presumed-common blood casting a shadow over her life there.
Despite this, she persevered to strive to please both the High Priestesses and her goddess, whose choice she was determined to vindicate for all to see. As she reached her adulthood however, she felt unprepared to take the final rites to cross the gap from acolyte into the sacred domain of the priestesses, fearing her youth would combine with her birth to undermine her work in the strict class-minded city of Skuld. She pleaded with the High Priestesses to grant her leave to take a holy pilgramage into the wild lands beyond the glory of Mulhorand, as the great goddess once did in her aspect of Sharess, that she might one day return with experience and confidence.
They granted her the request gladly, whether in sympathy or simply to remove the problem she posed to their Temple's reputation, and she left her homelands, vowing in the name of her pride and her goddess to return a better person, and rejoin the Temple as a priestess capable of bringing shame upon any who would call her into question in the future.
And so she travelled north…eventually coming to the strange and magical land of Narfell...
