Against All Odds

  • “No….No…No…No…No!”

Ridush tightened his muscles in anticipation to what was to come.

Whackkk… The bamboo stick smacked across his knuckles and he gritted his teeth with the pain. He sat at small table across from Master Roe in a room with a few candles that cast shadows to all corners, while providing a minimal amount of light.

He had come to the monastery a year before to learn the discipline his father felt he needed. His father, Grimdahl was a half orc, as was his father. Both had married human women so the orc blood was very thin in Ridush. Even so, Grimdahl knew the kind of challenges Ridush would face in his life, and he wanted him to be prepared both in mind and body. The monastery of the Old Order was a series of small structures, barely fortified, but well hidden in the Bloodstone Pass of Damara. Grimdahl knew Ridush would be safe there.

Master Roe looked at Ridush with a mixture of compassion and frustration. “ We will say it again and again. You must think, Ridush. Allow your mind to work before your tongue.”

Ridush started reciting his lesson again. “My name is Ridush. I am very pleased to meet youse….”

Whackkk… “Uhh…I mean I am very pleased to meet you. Please allow Ridush…

Whackkk… “Please allow me to be of assistance.”

Ridush’s training lasted 6 years, and as his father wished, his mind and body grew stronger. His mastery of the common trade language surpassed his Master’s expectations but he still struggled with numbers. His natural strength enabled him to excel in the physical arts as he endeavored to take command of his body and improve his dexterity and reflexes.

One morning as he opened his eyes and rolled over in his bed, he was surprised to see Master Roe sitting cross-legged on the floor in the corner of the room. He sat up quickly and slipped on his robe. “Master, is there something wrong?”

Master Roe looked at him with a stone-faced expression. His feelings were unreadable. “Ridush, it is time for you to leave this place. I have taught you all I can, but your training is far from complete.”

“Who will be my new Master?” asked the half-orc.

“You will be your master. You will be a student of life but will guide your own destiny. Go forth in the world and learn. Learn from the land and from the beasts. Learn from those you encounter, friend and foe. Always remember, you are a part of the whole, of everything around you. What part you will play is yours to determine. Use the tools of mind and body to determine your path. Go in peace.

With that, he rose and walked out. Ridush stood stunned for a few moments, then started gathering his belongings and headed out into the world.
