An argument at the South Gates of Norwick…
This is a conversation that took place at the South Gates of Norwick between my character, Camella, and Kylie Traverns. I thought it was an exceptional dialog, demonstrating our contrasting moralities. Honestly, I had not given my character's moral stance for following Loviatar much thought until this conversation. I want to thank Kylie's player for helping me further the dimensions of my character.
–---------------------------------------
To understand the context, you should know that Kylie previously inquired Camella about her religion and instead of telling Kylie about it, Camella decided a first-hand approach would be more informative.
The demonstration went poorly and Camella has just caught up to Kylie, to apologize, when this conversation begins.
Camella: There you are, I wanted to apologize.
Kylie: freezes
Camella: I’m sorry for hurting you, I’ve practiced the ways of my goddess for so long I have forgotten what it was first like.
Kylie: licks her lips um…
Camella: Blinks, assessing your reaction to the apology.
Kylie: I um… just wanted to know who it was you followed, not convert or anything.
Camella: I thought it would be easier to demonstrate it, such actions please my mistress… but if you only wish to understand her name, she is called Loviatar.
Kylie: You can understand something intellectually without having to actually experience it.
Camella: laughs
Kylie: It’s true!
Camella: For wizards, yes, for Priestesses of Pain, never.
Kylie: Well, I don’t need to go burning perfectly good hands to feel good about myself, somehow.
Camella: Yet it represents the life everyone leads, we feel pain and sorrow, which allows us to know enjoyment.
Kylie: Yes, we feel them, but most people try to avoid it. Only those who follow dark powers actually seek it out!
Camella: Dark powers… giggles Do not mistake me for that necromancer [Zedath]. The power of my Mistress is firm but caring, it turned me from a weak girl, not so dissimilar from yourself, into the woman I am today.
Kylie: … your mistress revels in the agony of others. That isn’t caring, that is a Dark Power. The suffering of others fueling its source.
Camella: Suffering of others, yes, but for whose sake? Not hers nor mine, for theirs.
Kylie: For what purpose?
Camella: To make them stronger, I believe, but I do not pretend to fathom all the aims of the Willing Whip I serve.
Kylie: …..
Kylie: To make them stronger? You honestly believe that to be an admirable goal?
Kylie: At what cost!?
Kylie: Decency, morality, virtue, even humanity itself?
Camella: In pain and misery, you find yourself, who you really are… and when you emerge, no obstacle is too great. You learn to appreciate humanity even more, she is not like some deities that revel in destruction.
Kylie: Only the destruction of what is enjoyable, the destruction of all that makes life worth living.
Camella: I do not see how pain destroys those things. If you learn to revel in pain itself, it becomes an admirable goal.
Kylie: How can you argue that pain is not inherently harmful? That the choice to seek it out in place of pleasure shouldn’t be reserved for the mentally ill?
Camella: Is the prince who has his entire life handed to him on a platter truly happy? Will he know the joy that someone who toils for their sustenance and pleasure, truly knows?
Kylie: Yes, things that are earned are valued more than things that are given, but you are misrepresenting the point.
Camella: To earn something is to sacrifice, pain is one form of sacrifice. She smiles kindly. Many will never understand this… that’s why I insisted on showing you.
Kylie: You’re just a madwoman… burning my hand only shows that hands may burn.
Kylie: Pain is inevitable, everyone knows this, and pain is often the measure of value of a reward, but that does not justify that more pain increases the value of the reward.
Kylie: It is like going to the market and paying fifty coin for an apple worth three.
Camella: Perhaps I am mad, but if so, I prefer it to a girl who cowers at the flickering of a candle on her skin… a weak, meager existence is not for me.
Kylie: What would you have had me do? Wait until it consumed my hand?
Camella: Wait until you surrendered to the experience, and then… Well, you do not care to know the intricacies of my religion.
Kylie: Because it is absurd!
Camella: Less absurd than others, and more rewarding than many.
Kylie: Rewarded with another lash of the whip, no doubt.
Camella: A lash of the whip and a kiss, both of which are one in the same.
Kylie: shakes her head
Camella: But I came here to apologize, not argue with you… I do not expect all to understand my mistress.
Kylie: I wish to never speak with you again.
Camella: Very well. she bows her head slightly and walks off
