Azatar Rymus

  • The Halfling Defence League

    Account Name: kaokaokao
    Character Name: Azatar Rymus

    Birthplace: Cimbar, Chessenta
    Mother: Melindrassina (Noblewoman, now deceased)
Father: Lord Xander Rymus (Noble, still runs the family)
    Sisters: Dalia and Calli
Brother: Keth Freefall (fathers bastard son)

Azatar's mother and father were an arranged marrige. Lord Xander was getting later in years, an ex-soldier in the war for Unther, who decided to settle down in a small town just outside of Cimbar. His deeds and heroics had given him the respect and earned him the title of Baron. Although fairly weathy, Xander did not live in a large keep, instead his house was to be considered a little larger then a mannor, complete with servants quarters and a small plot of fertile land around it. He ruled over the small town with a kind heart and a generousity unlike most other nobles in the region. Even with his generousity, he was by no means an easy mark, and drove out evil and it's kind with a mighty iron fist. This often caused various conflicts with neighbouring nobles.

Azatar's mother was the daughter of a minor noble house located in Akanax, and his marrige to her was a matter of political tact, and entirely done as a pledge from Xander to King Hippartes, and the service of his armies to the king. Xander was kind to his wife, and always made sure she felt the pampered life of luxury she was used to, but he did not truely love her. His love was for that of a young sorceress, whom was the advisor at the local library. Their love was true, but secret, and her name has since been lost to the history. But their love did provide a son for Xander, an it was his first born, the strong Keth Freefall. Keth was raised by his mother in secret and was never told of his heritage, but was indoctrined into Xander's service as a squire, training to become a knight. (Keth's story is another long tale).

Azatar was born about 4 summers after Keth, and was considered blessed at birth by all in the region. He instantly became heir to the family estate and was immediately cherished by the villagers. Though to much debate among their household, Azatar was to be raised as a soldier like his father, trained in combat and tactics, however his mother would constantly insist that combat without purpose was evil, and one must devote their lives to improving the world around them. So Azatar learned to follow Torm's teachings, and train in combat as instructed by his father. Many years of training and schooling, and Azatar was becoming a strong and handsome young man. Many of the local women would giggle and blush in his presense, and by the age of 15 he had many suitors. On his 16th birthday, the squire Keth Freefall had attained Knighthood, and was instructed to protect his lord Xander and his family. Much of their free time, Keth and Azatar would spend together, discussing battles, tactics, and women, like the best of friends. Keth being a few years older was much more experienced then Azatar, but never looked down upon him, and treated him like a brother. (even not knowing they were)…

Upon Azatar's 18th birthday, his father was summoned to a meeting in the capital, and a grand coup had taken place. While Xander and Keth were gone to the capital, assassin's crept into their estate and sought out to kill Xander's only son. Unfortunately for them, Azatar had snuck out to a barn on the far end of their property to frolick with a local girl, and was not in the home. They murderered many of the servants, as well as Azatar's screaming mother. (who had accidentally come in to check on Azatar when the Assassin's were in the room)... When Azatar had returned in the morning, the devestation was complete, and his house turned inside out. He found his mother laying crumpled on the floor in a pool of her own blood, having been stabbed multiple times. He cried. He cried and cried, until the tears could flow no more, hours he grieved over his mother, and when it was all said and done, his sorrow turned into hatred, and thoughts of revenge. Fire burned in his eyes as he rose and went to his fathers room. Here he picked up his families sword and began to walk out of the room, hatred, revenge and anger burning and fueling him towards the door. As soon as he touched the handle on the door and went to open it, he recieved a shock as a flash of light blinded him and knocked him unconcious. He dreamed.

He dreamed of killing, and dismembering those that had murdered his family, he dreamed of what their screams would sound like, how they would beg him for mercy, and he would not grant it. Then he dreamed of another way, he dreamed of forgiving them for their crimes, and he dreamed of Torm. He dreamed and saw and prayed, making a silent vow to root out evil where it is, where it breeds, and where it seeks to destroy all that is good and right. He awoke.

Azatar awoke to seeing his father and Keth looking down at him, they hugged as they realized Azatar was not dead, and had been spared. Xander although furious at the insult of the assassination, could not grieve for his wife, but proceeded to declare war on a neighbouring noble house, accusing them for the murder. Azatar locked himself away in a room for 3 days, on the 3rd Keth knocked and was let in. Keth sat Azatar down on the bed and began to tell him of wisdom and tried to give him some worldly knowledge, before telling him what was to come. After much debate and discussion, Azatar finally told Keth he was leaving, he had to travel northwest to the High Temple of Torm, in order to say prayers for his sins and attone for failing to save his mother. Keth tried to persuade him out of it, but could not, and Azatar packed his stuff and went to see his father.

His father was angered by his son's decision to leave, but he understood his son's heart. He gave his son a set of armor and a sword as well as a few coins and bid him return to him when he was ready. (knowing in his heart he would never see his son again).

Azatar left town with a local caravan his father had payed the merchant to escort his son as far as the capitol, and Azatar had started on a journey that would last the next 5 years. First to Cimbar, then by boat across into Sembia, and again by caravan to Cormyr. Arriving in Cormyr he was near broke, and was forced to sell his sword in order to pay for food and lodging. Azatar reached the High Temple of Torm, and spent the next 2 months deep in prayer. His devotion and dedication to Torm had shocked the clergy and priests, but they agreed to leave him to his prayers. Something happened to Azatar in that private prayer room, his ideals his sheer personality had changed. When he emerged, the clergy could immediately tell he had been blessed by Torm's Divine Grace. Azatar now had a purpose in life, and pledged his life to Torm's service. The clergy had many servants, and local paladins, and explained they did not currently have the ability to house him there. But they knew he would do great deeds, and wanted him to be given the opportunity. After several days one of the priests came to him, and explained of a far off land in serious need of his services, but would probably not welcome him to easily into their lands. He also explained that there were many great evils in the region that would seek to harm and destroy the local people. Azatar agreed to head north, and was given just enough to get him to Thesk, and he would need to find his own means after which to get him further. So he left.

Azatar caught caravan after caravan back to Sembia, then by boat crossed the sea and arrived in Thesk. Here he used the last of what he owned to barter travel through the hills north and into the Great Dale region. Here he spent some time doing work for a local Helmite church in trade for food and lodging, as well as some regearing. Azatar explained that he was asked to head north into the land of the barbarians and to do what he could to aid the people theer. The Church of Helm explained that they indeed had a presense there, and if he was willing to help where he could they had a way to get him there, but once there there was little they could do to get him back. And so, Azatar was teleported to Narfell.

Although unfortunately for him, the Helmite priest that had last been there, had not been there since the horrific changes to the land had occured, and Azatar was dropped straight into the East River. After a chilly and rather wet arrival, he pulled himself ashore and looked around. The area looked indeed beautiful and mysterious, but scarred by old kingdoms. He began by walking the river south, and eventually happened by a settlement. Norwick.

What happens now, is still to be written...
