Marty's campaign.

  • A small troupe of rough, burly huntsmen in bright red jackets enter the city with wagons of freshly-slain deer, wild boar, duck, and other game animals. They go to the dock quarter and set up fire pits, roasting the savory meat and seasoning it, and handing out slabs of steaming meat on a trencher of hard, crusty bread to any willing to some and eat with them.

"Leaffall helped bring us prosperity! It's because of her we've extra game to bring to you, and if you elect her you're sure to eat well. She hunts her prey… corruption, waste, tyranny, fraud... and brings it to earth. Why, even the other candidates, like that sensible Fisher fellow, have praised her. If you know who has your interests at heart, you'll vote for Leaffall."

They continue their barbeque until all the meat is gone, and then slouch their way out of the city.

A short speech given in the residential district just after Chadwick Whyte’s rally. She is dressed in one of her nicer green dress. Nice, but not too fancy.

    CITIZENS OF THE JEWEL!

My fellow candidate has called me Naïve for my words spoken against the actions of the Harvest Union, words spoken in defence of Duncan Hertwell, a humble farmer forced off his land.

    Please allow me to retort!

Ongoing Legal proceedings”? “Leave legal affairs out of politics”? I saw no legal proceedings. All I saw was a man being forced out of his home by bullies! I saw a farmer wandering the streets of the city desperate for help! This was no LEGAL AFFAIR! Be sure of one thing – When I see a bully rise up against anyone, I will stand to meet them! Be it N’Jast, the Banites, the hired thugs … And may the gods strike me if I remain silent when I see such things! “Legal affairs out of politics”!? Maybe that’s the whole problem with the current state of politics? – Legal affairs have been left out for far too long! A senator or a guild is not above the law! Our laws exist to protect the people, but the crafty, the sly and the powerful will use them to oppress!

And as I said clearly in my last speech, but perhaps not clearly enough for some, I am not against the guilds! Surely they are the life blood of this city! But I am against bullies! I am against a Baneish oppression of the workers, the farmers, the “little people” oh whose shoulders this city is carried! May the guilds be blessed in all their works! … Provided those works are good and right of course!

And my dear Mister Whyte, I know the history of the Fisher King well, and the history of the guild he founded. I also know well the history of the slave trade in Peltarch, of how Wavebreakers and Senators who opposed the Seafarer’s trade in bodies and souls would mysteriously end up floating face down in the Icelace! .. But this is ancient history of course. The slave trade was long ago outlawed by the senate. But I know of our good Fisher King well enough to be sure that he would never stand for a lot of what goes on in this city!

Mr Whyte asked what can I, Marty leaffall, really offer the city? Let me answer Mister Whyte! With my last breath I will strive to ensure that the sons and daughters of Peltarch are fed, are safe, and are free. I will ensure that our fields are productive, I will ensure that our borders are secure, and I will ensure that all who seek to oppress and bully are beaten back! THAT is what I have to offer Mr Whyte! I cannot be bought! I will always stand against a bully! I will always fight against corruption! I’m not here to tip the senate in favour of my guild! I’m not here to use the political process to achieve my own goals! I’m here, running for a seat, to do my duty as a citizen! To serve the city and her people! To make sure the city remains a Jewel, and is not turned into a lump of coal by greed and corruption!

    **My name is Marty Leaffall.

    I’m on your side!**

  • Well-inked posters go up in the noble and wealthy areas of the residential district.

  • _A number of very well-inked posters go up in those areas of the city that were hit the worst by the food shortages around the war and in the disruption afterwards due to the loss of Jiyyd's trade.

They show, alternately, a smiling farmer under a sunny sky delivering wagons of food through the Market Gate to eager citizens, or a saddened farmer delivering a meager, barren wagon to starving, disappointed mobs.

    Both posters read:

A number of flyers are put about the place, accompanied by bell ringers announcing that the candidate Martoushca Leaffall will be making a speech in the market area the next day..

    The next day:

    CITIZENS OF THE JEWEL!

There are MANY reasons why I love this city. The walls are high, the markets are fair, the folks are tall … But the main thing that I love about Peltarch is what it is built on! Our cities founder, the great Fisher King, built this city on an idea – FREEDOM! Rather than set up a royal dynasty or rule as a tyrant, he gave his crown to the people, so that they would rule themselves through their representatives on the senate. FREEDOM is what made this city GREAT!

And this city is great still, but the freedom that it is built upon is in short supply these days. A man should be free to have his hard work rewarded yes? Then why did I see the good farmer Duncan Hertwell being FORCED from his HOMESTEAD by the hired thugs of the HARVEST UNION!? The Harvest Union – the puppet of the SEAFARERS GUILD, oppressing our farmers and robbing them of their FREEDOM!

People of Peltarch, it may be true that the guilds offer much to this city, but they rob us of much too. The Seafarers Guild have offered to build homes for the homeless, yet we still see people living in tents. Their deeds betray their motive. They care not for your welfare, or your security. They want your blood, sweat and tears in order to build their mountain of gold! DON’T LET THEM STEAL YOUR FREEDOM! Who will end up like poor farmer Duncan next? I urge all of you – I am keen for your vote, but whoever you vote for, don’t give the guilds even more power to oppress by voting them into the senate! Let them do their gob as merchants and business men. Don’t let them become your tyrant masters!

There are candidates that have yet to come under the thumb of the guilds, and if you feel that somehow I am not worthy of your vote, then I beg that you vote for one of them. I AM NOT AGAINST THE GUILDS, but I AM against them becoming tyrants over us!

Good people, vote with your head and your hearts!

Up until this point I have not spoken agaisnt any other candidate, but some things must be told. Should you elect me as your representative on the senate, I will stand against the OPPRESSIVE deeds of any group or individual that attempts to rob the people of this city of their FREEDOM!

    DEEDS NOT BLOOD!

  • A strangely familiar halfer in crimson garb is seen to be wandering the streets of Peltarch with a little "Marty for yoo!" flag waving from his shoulder plate. He is also seen asking about Grak and his complaints about who Marty chooses for friends. It would appear he is quite irate about the comments made.

    speaks up

You know… he's right on one point (and one point only I might add - the rest of what he said was total garbage) - it is odd for us to claim "bosshod" by mere words. Actions will always speak louder than words - and I anyone who knows of my actions will know two very important things about me. First, that this city and the people in her are more precious to me than my own life. And second that I rarely back down from a fight!

So vote for me, and I pledge that together we will get things done!

He is seen nodding and applauding for her as well as starting a chant of "Marty! Marty!" after she is finished. *_A marching band, complete with juggling midgets and busty women handing out flyers, makes it’s way through the poorer areas of the docks district and the residential area, rounding up a crowd as it goes. If finally ends at the stage adjacent to the market place, where stalls handing out oversized white daisies, flyers, cider, mystery-meat-on-o-stick and hin pastries have been set up. A large white banner is strung up across the top of the stage with the word “MARTY” painted on it with bold green letters. Pony rides have been organised for the children, as well as an assortment of other games.

The band plays some numbers on stage as the festivities continue. Eventually the music stops, and a pair of bell ringers ring their bells to get the attention of the crowd. A pair of burly men drag a pair of crates toward the middle of the stage, a smaller one acting as a step up to the larger one. Climbing up onto the larger crate, Marty stands to give her speech. She is dressed in a rather plain green dress._

Are you all having a good time!?

some cheers, mumbles and grunts form people speaking with their mouth full

    **Smashing!

Thank you all so much for turning out!

My name is Marty Leaffall, and I am running to be your representative on the Peltarch senate.

A lot has been promised in the lead up to the election. Promises of security, promises of prosperity….

I would have promises to make too! As a counsellor amongst the druids I could promise to feed the city by increasing the yield of fish from the Icelace, and to multiply the harvest of this city’s crops. As a soldier I could promise to ensure your security and the safety of your families. I could promise to work toward eliminating poverty in our city, to work hardest to ensure it is rebuilt … But you know what? I’ve already been doing all of that, and I’ll keep doing all of those things wether or not I am elected to the senate! You don’t really need to be a senator to do any of the things that most candidates have promised so far.

What is the senate? Peltarch is not ruled over by a king or by nobles or the wealthy. This city is run by people who represent YOU!

    Well - that’s the theory.

When you decide who to vote for come election day, don’t vote for the one who threw you the biggest party, or who made the fanciest speeches! Vote for the one who you know will speak up for you! Vote for the one who, when the senate votes on an issue, will vote on your behalf! Vote for someone who loves this city and the people in it more than their own life!

Folks please give me your ear for a moment longer. I’d not want your vote through bribe. Unlike some others I don’t see your vote as something that you are selling! I’d have your vote not for what I can give you but for who I am.

Orcs destroyed our family caravan and killed my parents when I was very young. As an orphan I grew up in this city, growing to love it and every one in it as my own family. Like many of you I have survived on a wage from a guild. I know what it is like to have no coal to burn in my stove on a winter night. Like many of you I have struggled to make a living in this city. For this city I have gone to war. Yes snicker if you will … I am short … and just a lass … but how could I not fight against those seeking to destroy the city that has been my home and my family! And so I fought. I fought against their agents, their sinister clerics and their foul undead. I went toe to toe with N’jast’s gigantic Armatures. Were it not for a miracle from the hands of the gods of nature my crushed remains would be out there still! But by the grace of the gods I am here today.

That’s who I am folks. No flashy mage here. No grand general. No shiny paladin. Just a woman. Just one of you. Your daughter. Your servant. And, I pray, your representative on the senate.

May a blessing be on Peltarch, and on all who build her up!

    DEEDS NOT BLOOD!

Thankyou and bless you all, every one!

And please keep eating! Don’t let any of this food go to waste!**

    @245ee719e4:

Perhaps you should reconsider, join the military instead where you will be just as much an asset to the city as you would as a senator, and leave the politics to poloticians?

Of course Im not trying to convince you to drop your campaign, as it is every citizens right to run; But perhaps your skills may be put to greater use in the service of the Jewel. Just something to think about.

Times a dire indeed if our military cannot survive without the aid of a Halfling lass!

Oh I have been "thinking about" this for many years now. Long before N’jast began their march toward the jewel I was taking stock of my life and considering carefully how I may best serve the city I love.

Isn’t asking me to stick with being a soldier just like asking Lavindo to remain at his post, or like asking Whyte to stick to his trade? I actually think that someone with as wide experience of life as I would make a better candidate for the senate than any professional politician who has lost contact with the people he is supposed to be representing.

“Leave politics to the politicians”? Goodness! Peltarch’s “politics” is based on the idea that its people are free. That freedom is maintained by our election process, where the people vote candidates onto the senate who they believe will speak and vote on their behalf. At the end of the day it is the people, not I, who will decide how I will serve them best, either as a gardener, soldier or senator. I have given that choice over to the people of the Jewel. Come what may I will remain a servant to the people of this city.

As for my “weeds” comment, the invasion of N’jast revealed traitors on our senate. During this time of rebuilding we can ill afford for this city to be lead by the selfish, the greedy, or by people who will betray us to foreign powers. That is why, if I become senator, I will propose that divine measures be taken to determine the motivation and allegiance of all who take office. Those whose successful election is found to be based on a facade should be expelled and punished as enemies of the people.

  • @7fba4ae654=Kayleb:

**Well I guess the senate is like a garden. In any garden you need to make sure there is a good balance. A corum of senators who represent all walks of life in Peltarch would be best. As a senator I would put great effort into keeping a balance, and ensuring that things don’t tip too far toward the favour of any one group. And of course there will be weeds that need to be taken out every now and then.

But to be honest my skills as a gardener are not the primary skills I would be bringing to the senate. I am also a soldier. Like all good soldiers I have learnt to value the lives of the people I defend above my own. I think that would be my primary gift to the senate, my self sacrificial passion for the Jewel and its people.**

What do you mean by "There will be weeds that need to be taken out every now and then." Are you still referring to the senate as a garden?

The peltarch military is in need of soldiers, are you ready to waist your soldiering skills in a position focussed on pushing paper and sitting through a quorum?

_Symone yet again approaches a candidate with a few questions.

You seem to have made your main point of focus that you will represent the common people. I ask though will you then ignore the voices of the wealthy, nobles, merchants, military or otherwise?_

    **Not at all!

It is the wealthy, the merchants and the military who provide employment and protection for the people! I feel that a senator needs to listen to all citizens. We can only prosper together.

But when the senators gather to vote on any issue, the folks of Peltarch should know that my vote will be made on behalf of the common people. It’s not that I am opposed to nobles, or the guilds, it’s just that I am not one of them. I am a commoner. I feel that I can represent the commoners.**

Also, how do you feel your long standing gardening skill, will best translate to your senatorial duties? Have you any experience that can be used to improve how well you do your job as a senator?
