Unknown background of Caelian Thunderhawke
-
As I understand, this is supposed to be what happened to your character before he reached Narfell. This is my first RP ever, and therefore, my first background story ever… Well, Here goes!
Stalking the deer through the forest... Caelian moves slower than the minute hand of a clock. Inching closer and closer, closing the distance between him, and his soon to be prey. He pulls one of his sharpened kukris from it's sheath on his leg, and the creature raises his head... Caelian stops... lowers himself further towards the ground. Now lying in wait, the hunter pulls the second kukri from it's home on his side, and readies his body for the attack that he is about to launch. The animal scans the area, but the camouflage techniques of our hunter far outsmart the senses of this creature.
Like a bolt of lightning, with the snapping of twigs and the crunching of leaves, Caelian leaps toward the deer, grabbing it by the neck. Before it has a chance to struggle, he lodges his kukri in the base of the neck, severing the spinal cord, killing his prey... instantly... painlessly.
While carrying his family's new meal home, he remembers his father, and the things he taught him about being one with nature. His father was trained in the ways of a fighter, yet always had an affinity for the natural world. Some of his lessons run through Caelian's head:
"Each one of these animals has just as much right to live as you do... IF you plan to take a life, make sure you do it only to prolong your own."
"A hunt is decided by three variables; How well you know your prey. How well you know your land. How well you know yourself."
"Caution, trust, security. These are privileges, not rights. The only right you have, is faith. Have faith that you will survive... and you will be amazed how long you will live without caution, trust, and security."
Caelian thinks on these things on his short trek to his home in the western end of the forest. He remembers how happy his parents made him, His mother, a Cleric of Mielikki, also had a place in the natural world, so his family lived a good life, separate from civilization, in a nice log cottage in the woods.... He misses them so much...
When he was 16, Caelian's father passed away when protecting a sick fawn from a pack of 5 poachers. He told them how wrong it was to prey on an innocent, sickly animal, solely for it's pelt. When they refused to back down, a brutal fight ensued. His father was able to kill 4 of the men, but the fifth got away, and wounds that were left behind from the 5 of them, proved too much for the old man to bare. Caelian's mother was unable to help. She tried healing, but he had been gone for too long, and it was beyond her abilities. As she sit in front of her husband crying, the sickly fawn wobbled over and lay next to him, placing it's head in the lap of it's fallen protector. Caelian's mother realized at this point, that what had happened was a natural process, and however hard it may be, she should not try to change it. Wiping her tears away, she headed home.
About 6 months later, his mother passed away suddenly, for reasons unknown, leaving Caelian alone to fend for himself. He knew she had died of a broken heart, as she missed his father so. Caelian couldn't stand to live in the house that gave him so many memories of things that were no more, So he left, with no distinct destination, just walking west. He stayed out of towns, sleeping in the forests in which he felt so comfortable. Until one day, he saw a beautiful girl playing in a lake, just north of where Caelian had made camp for the time being. Caelian approached her as he would a hunt... quietly, trying to make sure she did not see him until he wanted her to. This would be the first time he had spoken to a human since the death of his mother, almost 2 years ago. Caelian was now 18 years old, and was a bit lonely... He wanted what his father had in his mother... a companion to share his life with.
The girl's name was Marion. She lived in a town just east of the forest that Caelian had been living in for the last 3 or 4 months. He was in love from the moment that he saw her playing with the animals near the lake. He went through a somewhat long, awkward process of courtship...(As Caelian had no idea what he was doing) until eventually, Marion ran off with him to be married. Caelian had met a druid in his travels, by the name of Redwolf. Redwolf performed a ceremony, bonding Caelian and Marion together for life, with the creatures and trees as their witnesses. Caelian finally felt that he was ready to make a return to his home.
For the next year and a half, the two of them lived happier than they could ever imagine. Caelian kept his new family fed with his hunts, and Marion even taught him the importance of social abilities, and gave him the courage to start entering nearby towns, and learning anything he could from anybody. They couldn't be happier.
On this day, the day of Caelian's hunt, the two had been together for exactly a year and a half, and Marion wanted it to be celebrated in a special way, so she sent him to hunt a deer for dinner while she prepared. Walking towards their home, with his prey still dragging behind him. He thought of how happy he was when he noticed something. The front door of their cabin was open... and there was rustling going on inside. He heard Marion scream in pain...
Dropping his prey, Caelian broke into a sprint running at his home, drawing his blades as he entered the door. The first thing he saw were two men, covered in blood, looking for anything of value. Caelian's mind ran red with anger, and before anybody knew what happened, he sliced open the first man, from stem to sternum, spilling his intestines on the floor. The second man was dead before he could react, with one of Caelian's kukris thrusted violently into his face. Standing over two dead men... breathing heavily, he heard voices in the other room.... Marion....
Kicking the door in, Caelian saw something that made him drop his blades. He saw Marion bleeding in the corner... dressed in a beautiful cloth dress she had been making for their dinner tonight... her eyes saw his, and he felt everybit of pain that she felt... and then some. The last and biggest of the men was standing on the other side of the room, brandishing a knife, staring at Caelian, and he yelled, "Who the hell are you!?"
Caelian, still looking at Marion, anger being overcome by hatred, and vengeance, pulled out his hunting knife and hurled it across the room, stabbing the man in the chest and dropping him to the ground. Caelian walks over, pulls the knife out of it's bloody resting place, wipes it on the man's shirt, and places it back in it's home in his boot. The man pleads, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I will leave, I will reform, I am a changed man! Please, I don't want to die!" Caelian stared into the man's eyes... then looked back over at Marion... still bleeding in the corner. Caelian picked up his kukri's and started to slowly slaughter the man. Cutting him in anyway that could cause pain, but not end his life.
When the man lie bleeding in the corner, possibly going into shock due to the immense blood loss, and pain caused, but not yet dead, Caelian walked over to Marion, and held her in his arms... she was bleeding badly... she looks into his eyes and says... "Caelian... this was not your fault... I love you." He responded with, "I love you too... more than anything" and she smiled one last smile, as she passed on.
Caelian stood up, walked over to his prey on the other side of the room, and slit his throat. He remembered his father's advice to him all those years ago...
"Each one of these animals has just as much right to live as you do... IF you plan to take a life, make sure you do it only to prolong your own."
"I guess not everything is as simple as it should be." He said to himself. He then grabbed any supplies he could carry in a pack, and left the house... for good.
I will try to keep adding to this story, up until Caelian reaches Narfell.
