Dwalin Dáin

  • Dwarven Challenge

In the distant borders of the Frozen North many dwarven clans can be found. In the Ice Mountains, near Adbar Citadel, exists one clan called Frozen North. All dwarves of this community are devoted to Moradim and dedicated to the art of forge, blacksmithing, commerce and mainly the war.
During centuries they had kept their fort impenetrable, due to the fame of the dwarven defenders trained by the oldest. It was during this time of calmness that Dwalin Dáin was born. At this moment when the traditions of war weren’t necessary, and any of the local nobility with money or power could wear a full plate armor and receive the title of dwarf defender, without in the least have ever used an axe in life. It was easy, as wars didn’t exist no one needed to show value in the battlefield. Therefore the defense of the dwarven city was composed of defenders without capacity. Except for some few and the family of Dwalin, that was composed by his father Brognonar and his brother Dkalin, who were true dwarf defenders, trained in the old way by his grandfather Blufur Dáin who then dedicated his life to the ancient council and forge.
But the calmness did not last forever. Dwalin had about 45 years when the change started. While he initiated his training to become a defender, an orc tribe, forgotten by the dwarven patrols, started to grow under the leadership of a king orc called Kurcluc Knife-Tip, distant relative of the famous Obould Many-Arrows.
One day the army of Knife-Tip had became strong enough to besiege the dwarven hold. Ignoring the advice of the ancient council, the noble leaders of the dwarves had decided to go for combat in the open field, taking with them great part of the army of true defenders. The great majority was overthrown in the battle and the ones that had remained joined the family of Dwalin in the efforts to defend their home from the orcs. With great losses they managed to keep the hold safe.
The power of the Clan of the Frozen North was then removed from the noblemen and returned to the ancient council due to the inapt choices of the noblemen and the innumerable decrease in the army. Dwalin’s father, Brognonar Dáin was nominated general and his brother, Dkalin, were enclosed in the army. However, the biggest change occurred for the youngest. From that moment on, the majority of the young dwarves were enlisted to initiate combat training. All would be used in case of a new battle against the orcs. And for those that would like to become a dwarf defender, money and power would not suffice anymore. Nor would birth or beeing from one of the most traditional family of Defenders, whose father was the army´s general, as Dwalin´s case. From that moment on, the condition would be to become a strong and powerful warrior with proven combat expertise before one could apply for dwarf defender’s training. It would be needed to know how defend oneself with the shield and attack with violence using a specific weapon: the dwarven waraxe. To acquire such abilities, the candidates would be sent for distant lands and told to only return when they had became skilled fighters. This was made to revive the lost tradition of training only the most capable and powerful warriors as defenders.
And indeed some accepted the challenge. Amongst them there was Dwalin. All he could remember was the last talk with his family, the bless received from the cleric of Moradim, and when he woke up in the entrance of Norwick.
Since he has arrived in these lands, he has lived of the hunting. Tried to improve his abilities with an old battleaxe he has found, without much success. Tried to find a dwarf who could help him, but haven’t found any. His father and brother always warned him not to trust strangers, mainly of other races. However, he was aided by two elven citizens of Norwick, Thorn Drumheller and Sûldîn Cúthalion, that initiated him in the art of fight and the ways to become an adept warrior. He met other characters in the city as Mrs. Harmony, whom he judges to be very wise and charismatic, and General Lyte with whom he had the honor of fighting along, only for one time, the vilest of creatures that he has ever seen. Another that was with Dwalin in this battle was Moradrim D'iMal, one elven war priest that he knew in Norwick, for whom he feels great friendship.
He has heard about a dwarven cleric of Moradim called Storn Morgar since he arrived in Norwick, but didn’t have opportunity to know him personally.
