Dormius "The Black" Grey

  • Hailing from the regions to the east of Narfell, Dormius Grey is of Thayan origin from the city of Delhumide. Being raised in regions ruled by the Zulkirs and the ever-feared Szass Tamm, Dormius has witnessed at a very young age to how ruthless the Wizards of Thay can be. At the tender age of 9 living with his father, a slave for a local low-level wizard, saw his father disintegrated by flames from his masters hand for misplacing a very pricey scroll. The wizard then went to torch the young boy but Dormius swiftly snatched a scroll known to him to be an invisibility scroll and nimbly lept behind a large casket full assorted items. Much to the surprise of the wizard, Dormius successfully cast the spell upon himself. The wizard would not be fooled so easily though as have himself casted a see invisibility and an invisibility spell upon himself, silently watched young Dormius move about the large scroll room as he made his way to the open doorway. Much to the surprise of Dormius as he went to move through the doorway, his invisibility vanished. A long, bony hand with long yellow fingernails was layed upon young Dormius's shoulder and the words "If you run, You shall die" were muttered almost with a snake-like hiss. Almost with titan-like strength, young Dormius fought off his urge to run even though it was too his doom and instead turned to face the wizard who just killed his father. The wizard, surprised by the bravery of this boy and the ease of which he was able to cast that mid-level spell decided that if he could have the boy become his student, over the years young Dormius would indeed be a strong and faithful ally. He then told Dormius to choose. You will continue to serve me but instead of a slave, you will become my apprentice (That is nearly unheard of in Thay) or suffer the same fate as your father (The fate which fell his father is neither rare nor uncommon in Thay). Suffice to say Dormius chose to serve the wizard but has never relinquished the memories of that night and his father from his mind. He vowed to avenge his father.

Over the next few years Dormius was beaten, starved, ridiculed and even forced to kill other slaves just to satisfy his master. This is where he received the nickname "The Black" from his master for only a person with a black soul could kill that easily. This surprisingly did not bother Dormius as much as the wizard hoped. Those years were few though as the wizard decidingly grew impatient with himself for delaying Dormius's growth as an Apprentice. The wizard figured he has toyed with the boy long enough and the promises of power, fortune and fame were growing thin. Of course they were lies in the beginning, both Dormius and the wizard knew this but as time went on the words grew purpose and both started to believe. This is when Dormius's apprenticeship started.

The next many years the wizard taught Dormius the basics of wizardry, which in itself is not an easy thing to learn. The only thing Dormius refused was the tattooing of his body. The wizard decided that he should let the boy demand something in return for killing his father. So the wizard agreed. The wizard also taught Dormius to control a familiar. The many years in Thay, the merciless killings of others by his own hand, the witness of his fathers death, all tainted that once young boys good nature and turned it into a pitiless, greedy, murdering soul. With that, Dormius chose a beholder. Long ago Dormius's thirst for revenge was pushed aside in his thirst for power but then as the wizards teachings slowed his mind started to wander.

One night while the wizard was away doing something with other local wizards, Dormius packed a bag with breads, meats, and other assorted items including his heavily worn scroll case which held not scrolls but all his gold which he has acquired over the years and decided to leave his cruel but accustomed ways and head west. He traveled for a great time only stopping in nearby towns for lodging when the weather was unbearable, not speaking to anyone except the innkeeper nor taking part in any of the towns activities. He wanted to not draw any attention to himself so if the wizard sent word to anyone to find him, nobody would remember him.

With his coin running low and growing very tired of running, Dormius came across the small settlement named Jiyyd and decided if there was any place good enough to stop running, this would be it. He knows he is a long way from home and not having any tattoos helps to not draw attention to himself but he still shaves his head and facial hair including his eyebrows.
The hooded cloak which he wears almost always while in public makes his shaven head and eyebrows very hard to see even if it is the brightest of days. The hood on his cloak comes forward from his ears and droops a little bit in front of his face sufficiently hiding it from view to all but those directly in front of him. If you are able to see Dormius's face, let it be known that he knows you are looking at him and will return the gaze.
