Shadows, dance with me…
Memories of a small, ginger-haired girl writing on the side of the road filled the mind of a full-grown woman, who crouched, smiling to herself as she read over a weathered piece of parchment by the side of the road. She recognised it as her own writing and began to recite it to herself in her head:
'Dear grubby little piece of parchment,
You are going to serve me as a historical document this windy eve. I write on you the story of a girl who is destined for something more than…" The writing overlapped and the woman narrowed her eyes, trying to make out the next few lines. '…pickles, bread, do the washing, clean the cellar...' "Wait," she thought. "I remember now - this was someone's ex-"to do" list."
'I am no longer the mangy street rat that is kicked around like a child's toy. I am a dancer; I dance in time with the heartbeats of regular men, stepping lightly, twisting, turning...slicing. My ginger curls will be but a blur in the corner of one's eye.
'Don't tell anyone, parchment...I think the rats are listening. The rats know most of my dirty little secrets already, but know this: I am not alone anymore. Brother and I have friends.'
_Brushing the mud from her clothing, she rose gracefully from her crouching position, taking the parchment off of the cobble road and walked over to the torch mounted on the wall, holding it up to the fire and letting the flames lick the corner of the parchment, watching the ashes fall to the ground and become swept up in the wind with a girlish grin.
Her parents washed away at sea, she had only her brother to lean on. Lost and alone, they soon found their way again through the…"kindness"...of strangers. Here she is, a grown woman, flowing curls and a blade in each hand, she moves with the grace of a dancer and the skill of a fencer._
