_"May the Earth continue to Live,
May the Heavens above continue to Live,
May the Rains continue to dampen the Land,
May the Forests continue to Grow.

Then the Flowers shall bloom and we people shall live again."_

It had been hard since Dad died in the war. There’d been talk of me being ‘prenticed away to the libraries or maybe even South to the keep, but all that changed when Dad didn’t come back. Mum needed me to look after my sister, Branwyn, tend the gardens, help dry and crush the herbs, make poultices up, deliver things, fetch things. It wasn’t hard, like soldiering or breaking rocks, but it was a long day, in whatever daylight Lathander sent us.

It was good too, spending more time with Mum. Once she knew I would be around. Teaching me what she’d picked up of plants and people and their ways, writing it down in my own growing herbal. It’s amazing, what she knows, what they do. Like life itself has such vitality in plants that it can share it with us, too.

They complement our nature even as we complement each other, in the city, in life. Blended, they can cure all kinds of ills. Together, we can do anything, if we choose to. All we have to do is reach out and find each other. Just listening to her stories about how she met Dad when they were travelling was amazing. Life outside of these walls. It made her sad sometimes, remembering what was lost, but life never really ends. Somewhere under the snow of the pass where he fell, there’ll be a plant, a tree, something that he’s nourishing.

Balance, pure and simple. Nothing wasted. All of us tied together in teeming, glorious life. We should let that drive us, help us to do good things, even if it’s just to be aware of what we are and how it all works around us. Sometimes in the markets I watched the adventurers, bloodstained, hawking a few trinkets for the price of another ale and I wonder what it is they’re missing, that they spend their time that way.

So we talked, Mum and me, and she could see that it was nearly time for me to go. Branwyn was near big enough to help out now and… Well. They need something, out there, they need to see that we need each other. Life is all around us, it’s what we are.

We all have our strength, our place in the world to find. So I’m going to go and help them find it.
