    Character: Beric Tallin

    Beric Tallin. Human. Aged 22 years. 170 lbs. Shaven head and multiple tattoos over the whole body, including his face.

    The child, Beric, never knew his parents. As an infant he was found upon the doorsteps of Ilmater’s Temple in the city of Neverwinter. The residing clerics took the child and raised him. Growing up in the temple, Beric was a happy child and brought many a smile due to his gentle ways.

    Not long after, he began his clerical studies. Watching his mentor and father-figure, Boaz the Poison Drinker, he learned how to heal the sick through herb lore and the blessings of the Broken God. By the examples of his elders, he was taught compassion and self-sacrifice. Daily he would wander the city and provide aid for those he found in need, be it providing a meal or healing an illness.

    At age 20, as a tribute to Ilmater and his Elders, Beric undertook a ritual of endurance through suffering. His entire body was to be tattooed with holy symbols and depictions of the greatest of Imateri Martyrs. The patterns were literally carved into his skin with a bone chisel much the way designs are carved into wood. Various inks were placed in the cuts to create the tattoos. The process was to take an entire week of continuous work. Beric was neither allowed to eat or sleep. Only could he drink pure water and pray to the Broken God for strength to endure the trial. Throughout his week-long test of endurance and suffering his groaning could be heard throughout the temple, but to the amazement of his Brothers, Beric uttered no word of complaint.

    The ritual was brutal for Beric and it caused much swelling in his face. So much swelling occurred that the he could not eat normally. So the clerics fashioned a funnel-like feeding tube to allow him to be nourished with some liquid food. After slowly healing from the tattooing ritual, Boaz, charged him with one final task – leave the Temple and find a new home to spread the comfort and mercies of Ilmater.

    So now Beric Tallin has come to the region of Narfell. He seeks to offer words of comfort and calming to those in pain, oppressed, or in great need. And he will offer healing to those who are sick or injured. This he does in the name of the One Who Suffers.
