The town depended heavily upon the water and fish that were prevalent in the river.
The town was a peaceful town that thrived as long as the river kept flowing. Even during the times of drought and famine in the land the depth and strength of the river provided the sustenance the townspeople required. This caused the people to become more and more dependent on the river. In fact so dependant that is the river were to stop flowing famine and death would overtake the town. No one understood this more that old man Kinsley.
Kinsley had tried to warn the town that they should find other sources of food and water or at least create a food store to sustain the town if the river were to run dry. The townspeople ignored old man Kinsley and even began to mock and tease him. This didn’t stop the old man form warning them again and again.
Ember paid the old man no mind, as she was still a child who did not worry of such matters. She would rather play with her friend or practice the incantations he father was teaching her. Her father was a wizard of sorts that had take up residence in the town after Ember was born and her mother was lost in childbirth. The death of Ember’s mother had taken the sense and adventure out of her father and he settled down in the town of Prydin to take care of his daughter. He was a good father and provided everything Ember needed.Like all good things the prosperity and good fortune of the town came to an end when the river began to weaken and dry up. The town assembled a small party to go up river and find what was the source of the river drying up. He father was among those chosen to set forth to find the answer and return the river to it’s full strength. Ember had pleaded with her father not to go but he told her he must go and assist the town or they may all die.
Ember’s care was entrusted to a good friend of the family Miss Lindra. Lindra was a good friend to Ember and her father and Ember had hoped that her father would take her hand in marriage one day. Lindra cared for Ember as best she could as the river continued to dwindle and soon because nothing more than a trickle.
Old man Kinsley’s prophecy had become a reality and the entire town was in distress. Some of the people in town began to harass Kinsley as is it had been his fault the river was drying out. Many of them said he had brought this upon them and cast blame upon him. Kinsley was eventually driven from the town and Ember has not seen him since.
A couple months passed and the party had not returned nor had any word of them reached the town. The river had dried up and most of the townspeople had either left in search of another home or was buried in the cemetery east of town.
Lindra could wait no longer and decided to set off for the town of Jiyyd with the hope of finding shelter and food for Ember and herself. The road was long and hard and Lindra had fallen ill and took on a feaver. Ember did the best she could to care for Lindra but her care was in vain. Lindra died on the road to Jiyyd and Ember was forced to press on alone and scared.
