OOC - Information Needed

  • Ok.

This thread is purely OOC, so for a change, you're welcome to keep it like that 🙂

I've agreed to help out Gobbletom a bit again here in Jiyyd, so here we are. My first off would be the kudos to both him and Belthor and all the other DM's that took time for it (or still are) for keeping this place nice and running. No worries, Gobble's not gone and still pulling the reigns here, he's just having a bit less time these days to keep everything running himself.

Now, I've been out of here for a long time, so currently I'm a bit out of the scoop so to say as to what's the real deal inside Jiyyd. I know the rough lines, current plots, some player positions, but I'd like to know the small details as well.

So… I'd like for our current Jiyyd citizens, to post up a reminder here, if they have any position worth of note inside the town, and what they've been doing with it. Players that have jobs for instance, Council positions, personal plots concerning Jiyyd, etc etc.

Might be a good thing or a bad thing, if you feel you cannot post publicly, then just shoot me a PM instead. If you feel there's anything about your Jiyyd character that us DM's should know: the same counts for you.

    Cheers,

    Shade

  • Major Theaon Thorn can be seen patrolling Jiyyd almost daily. He is usually seen in his Legion-colored full-plate occasionally with a large bastard sword wielded. Other times he can be seen taking Legionares out on patrols, mostly towards the Nars since the Legion is trying to make only planned excursions into the Windy Plains with the recent orc problems. It is obvious to most he does not fully trust the group of Helmites that have recently come into Jiyyd. Theaon believes they may try to take over General Grag's job. He isn't sure why Lens just let them come in and put themselves in charge of denfenses. Theaon is very suspisous of this, and also, when Helmites aren't around, can be heard saying that he wouldn't be surprised if those men had some type of trickery in mind and wern't Helmites at all. Although he is ordered to work to his best with the Helmites guarding town, he still advises Legionares to keep an eye on them, and also suggests that the Helmites not be allowed to use the Legion jail cells.

When not in Jiyyd, Theaon can be seen checking up on the Silver Valley. Sometimes he can be seen knelt down before the Hand of Yondalla, other times he can be seen socializing with his kin.

  • Bitsy Troff, priestess of Moradin and younger sister of Maythor and Belthor, is a member of the Troff Legion and Council of Moradin. Her home is currently the legion headquarters in Jiyyd. She isn't an avid adventurer, but will go travelling occasionally, usually in the company of other dwarves. A lot of her time is spent in the Legion hall and the Kaxanar temple.

Ginger Tealeaf is a resident of the Silver Valley. She is the Captain of the Silver Dragoons, the defence force of the Valley. Her patrols have been quiet, as the Valley has been a peaceful place to live. She sits on the Valley Council. Ginger is also a member of the Crafter's Union, and spends a lot of time working in and around Jiyyd. She is neutral on the Helmite vs. Legion issue, and believes that both groups are well-meaning and have played big roles in Jiyyd's survival/success.

  • Lilly Laer is a common face around Jiyyd, either wearing various outfits she's collected over the years or her legion full plate. A veteran of many confrontations and a few wars, now slowly climbing the Legion ranks. Seldom can she be found "standing guard" but often enough she will be near at hand with ears perked and scimitar loose in her scabbard should trouble show itself.

  • Dentin technically lives in Peltarch, but spends much of his time around Jiyyd, simply because it is under almost constant threat of attack, and because of the happenings in the area lately. The Machinist, the mechanists, the two confirmed Talosians,…

  • Zyphlin is now residing in the Bromley Estate and has been for some time, basically doing much as the old bard did and taking Jiyyd as a summer home (IE, a place that actually has ANYTHING at all going on in it unlike his everyday home 😉 ). He just finished renovating, and spends time in the house in jiyyd generally when he's doing personal experiments, studying, or other such things.

He's no qualms with admitting himself as Advisor to the Legion Generals, primarily Grag. He considers himself openly more as a trusted advisor then a rank and militia member of the group.

  • William Morrison is a Legion Private, who has spent much of his time in the town itself in the four years he has lived in Jiyyd. He defended the town during attacks many times before he was a Legion member, and has done so many times since, falling more than once in the process - so he tends to bristle a bit at those saying the Legion is never there to defend the town, even though he rarely responds.

Until recently, he was known for patrolling the Central Plains alone every morning (since he was L1), keeping tabs on orc strength and numbers, and reporting any unusual variations in either. When the Fortress orcs began drifting west onto the Central Plains, Will scouted for them as well, bringing reinforcements back to kill them if any were found.

Since the new orders came down to leave the orcs alone, he has done so, with misgivings. He believes that doing so is a mistake, as the Legion will be blamed for future orc attacks regardless, and leaving the orcs alone only allows them to build strength unchecked.

He tries to be friendly with most people, and at the very least polite, but he has little tolerance for those who insult his friends, and no tolerance at all for people who are overtly evil.

That said, he judges people on what they do - not what others say they are. As a result, he numbers among his friends many people that others do not like or trust based on their reputations.

With regard to the Helmites, he is neutral. Given the recent attacks on Jiyyd, he feels every sword raised in its defense is welcome, but he has concerns that the Helmites may be out to do more than just defend the town.

  • Mariston is seeking to make safe and re-establish the Tormish temple in Jiyyd…while not hiding in Peltarch that is.

  • With a home on the southern hill overlooking the long road , Kara has called Jiyyd home for a long, long time. Involved with the helmite temple on a semi-regular basis, she likes to keep informed of the goings on around Jiyyd and help promote an anti-undead feeling through the town and a general mistrust of Velsharoonites.

Though holding no official position in the town after a brief stint as trade minister, she has been involved in leading the defense against quite a few assaults at Jiyyd's gates. She takes great delight in proving that all the talk about the paladins of peltarch isn't true at all.

  • Keira is a Guardian Sister of the Sisterhood and as such spends a lot of time in and around Jiyyd. She has no official position in the Jiyyd hierarchy and previously, she's been briefly banned for worship of an evil deity (Auril). When present during threats to Jiyyd she helps in the defence, alongside whoever. She's unlikely to seek (or be granted) official positions in the militia or Legion because many suspect her motivation.

Jurgen is a young half-orc Tormish priest who has recently joined the Legion and seeks to join the Jiyyd Militia. He suspects he can do more good trying to raise the morality and honour of these southern folks than hide up north with the Paladins of Peltarch.

  • Thank you for the update KB 🙂

I'll make sure to check how things are going concerning those Legion NPC's Grag.

This reminds me as well… I'll make sure not to forget logging back into the Jiyyd IRC channel ^^.

And no... this thread was not just meant for high-profile PC's or PC's with specific duties in the town, though of course, yes, all information there is welcomed. This thread is meant for all players that have characters living in Jiyyd.

  • Nyda is currently a Sgt. in the Legion and is one of the Guardian Sisters of the Sisterhood. She is at the moment spending more time in Peltarch than in Jiyyd however, though she visits frequently. She is wary of the Helmites choosing to "guard" the sisterhood House, but as long as the guard is female has chosen as yet to not object.

  • @9918c50413=Sterling:

However, to make an argument when people know ooc that Legion members were not logged on is(…)

In summary: That line of argument is extremely unfair.

I fail to see where an IC response to in game events DM'ed by 2-3 DM's, and witnessed by DM's with targetted parties present, is unfair.

The fact that some here immediately start to think that this is nothing else than just an OOC punch, is very demeaning tbh, both towards the players involved and DM's, who have already for a long time worked behind the scenes to set a series of events in motion, for your enjoyment.

If you have further ooc issues with the thread regarding Legion/Helmites, take it up with me personally, or in the Legion's forums, not here. Anyone not belonging to the Legion, can keep that situation IC in these forums, please.

    @9918c50413=Kuker:

I dont think the last 6 posts were what Shade had in mind for this thread…..well 7 including mine now.

Nope. But well, it does show a bit. I'll trust that from here on this thread is used for what it's meant to be.

  • Raryldor uses Jiyyd more as a place to find someplace quiet than anything; he is, at heart, a wanderer. He's been shiftless of late. His elven lover is long gone. He is trying to make enough sense of his surroundings, now, to actually do something about them, like he has in years before, but things are coming apart in his grasp after his unwilling tenure as a champion of Myrkul. He's fallen back on a strong moral compass and faith, but little is as crystal clear to him as it was before.

I dont think the last 6 posts were what Shade had in mind for this thread…..well 7 including mine now.

Well technically Shade asked for reports from people with IC ranks or positions, we just took some liberties by assuming the purpose of that was to get a sense of what is going on in town in general. And when, if and how Legionnaires are involved in defending the town is part of that, isn't it? 😉

    EDIT:
I'd like to point out again and in more detail that Spellweaver owns the Emerald Tower located in the Silver Valley and all SWK members can use it as a start location (just request an Emerald Circle token from a DM). There isn't any particular activity that I'm aware of going on there, but I think we can safely assume that some SWK members spend a good portion of their time there, or have offices or living quarters there. Genzir divides his time between the tower, where he has a lot of books stashed, and the main Keep outside of Norwick.

  • Legion

oh that reminds me Legion NPC's have already been made and sent to the SDM… just yet to go ig... 🙂

  • Of course you shouldn't pretend like the Legion was there for an attack when they weren't, but that's different from saying the Legion is generally, consistently negligent about guarding the town. Not that there's anything wrong with your IC comment, it's just not something the majority of townsfolk, etc. ought to be expressing.

Incidentally, it is also true that the Legion does not have any formal guard or militia duties in Jiyyd. That said…

    @e2cd9a6d8f=Lagermane:

if the Legion is serious about standing guard on Jiyyd, pay a certain sum of gold every year for an NPC 'Troff Legion Soldier' at each gate. They can be there round the clock, which is what the players are saying is ICly the case, which will settle this. It doesn't have to be someone as formidable as the Norwick guards, just a visible presence.

    -Lagermane

… I think this idea is also worth considering.

  • @fd7846dbcd=Sterling:

In summary: That line of argument is extremely unfair.

Speaking as someone with no characters with Helmite ties or sympathies, and nothing against the Legion, here is an opposing view.

Granted people cannot be logged in 24/7. Granted the Legion is largely composed of PCs. Granted some Legion characters (Lyte comes to mind, I've seen her do this many times) do stand watch when on.

However, when my character is at the gates alone and orcs or whatever unpleasantness of the moment is charging them… I cannot go, "Hey, wait, ICly Grag and ten Legionfolk should be here to help me, can you please kill all the guys charging me to reflect this?" The DM would laugh their head off.

And when I live through that attack with three HP, and tell people about it afterwards, I am not going to go 'Oh, and the Legion was there, and saved my life!' when they did no such thing.

This certainly isn't the Legion's fault. It is a reflection of the fact that this is a recreation and not a job. But you're asking us to seriously edit our character's memories of what actually happened, who was actually there, and what conclusions we draw from it.

What I would suggest -- and I don't know if this is possible or not, just throwing this out -- if the Legion is serious about standing guard on Jiyyd, pay a certain sum of gold every year for an NPC 'Troff Legion Soldier' at each gate. They can be there round the clock, which is what the players are saying is ICly the case, which will settle this. It doesn't have to be someone as formidable as the Norwick guards, just a visible presence.

  • ICC

I like the polymorph idea… it has potential.

  • I'm going to have to go with Sterling and Green on this one. Accusing the Legion of leaving the gates undefended is making IC hay out of an OOC necessity. The players can't be logged in 24/7. Many Legionnaires live in Jiyyd, and the ones that don't have guild offices in Jiyyd. Not only the Legion Hall but also the Emerald Tower, for Spellweaver members. If they were logged in, they would go rushing out of their homes to defend the town. Nobody should ICly accuse the Legion of leaving the gates undefended unless they are either deliberately lying or exaggerating, or IC-ly ignorant.

If we want to give the Legion a proper IC chance to defend the town, why don't we work on ICly setting up a better reconnaissance and warning system.

This could include mages who take turns polymorphing into hawks or other birds with keen eyesight that can see for miles (much farther than the range of Detect Magic or Dispel Magic). These scouts could look over the walls of the orc fortress to check for a build-up of their forces. I know of 4 mages in the Legion that can do this. Druids could do this as well. Depending on how long it takes the orcs to build up an attack force, periodic scans of the fortress would be enough to give us some advance warning before an attack. Building a very tall watchtower on the southern hill would help as well (of course you couldn't see into the fortress, but maybe you could tell if lots of orcs are coming out of the gates).

OOCly we could either schedule gate attacks in advance or just send out a shout like we do with Norwick gate attacks.
