On the coast of Halruaa lays a small city, hosting a well sheltered harbor at the end of a narrow bay. In this city, Zalasuu, foreign magical artifacts are often examined for safety before being allowed transit to the capital. To foster a neutral environment for the detection of the alignments of the magical energies infused in enchanted objects, the House of Nivel has for generations specialized in balancing background magical and natural forces for an optimal setting for divination, and, occasionally, for novel researches.
Feeling too pressured to maintain his role in the rigid caste system in Halruaa, and wishing to master more martial applications of magic, Derek Nivel, third son of Benerect, has followed the example of his next oldest brother, Orthofer, and taken leave on a ship to faraway lands, new people, and exciting experiences. Derek expects to make a place for himself elsewhere, and that any return to Zalasuu would not be accepted as trustworthy, in that he might be deemed too Chaotic to be entrusted to keep magical balance pure for examinations and experiments.
Nevertheless, though there has surfaced that rebellious streak that can drive one to adventure, Derek remains mostly Lawful, and should make a reliable companion in any endeavor within his range of capabilities. Another outworking of the eccentric streak Derek has is his decision to follow Savras, instead of either Mystra or Azuth, as most Halruaans do. It is a personal quest of his, therefore, to find a shrine or temple dedicated to Savras.
Derek suffers a distrust of elves, expecting the same from them due to mistreatment of their kind at the hands of Halruaans. He also looks upon sorcerers with alarm, having phobia of their chaotic channeling of magic, this being a factor in his rejection of the typical deities of Halruaa, since they are also divine patrons of this distasteful class.
Random hints, hapful events, and coincidental occurences have led Derek to Norwick of Narfell, where he is amazed at seeing snow for the first time. He has committed to citizenship of Norwick, though he is not sure how long that shall last, but not expecting to change at mere whim. He is wondering at the rumors of outbreaks of wild magic, whether this is the result of sorcery, or whether it is a natural artifact of confluence of planes…
