    Character: Elegant Edward

"Sir Merquise! The labor is finished, your son is born!" shouts an elven attendant to his master, Daniel "The Dashing" Merquise [mare-key]. Daniel smiles hearing the news. Immediately he grabs his son from his mothers arms. He gazes into his first borns eyes with dreams of how his son will spread the family name.

"Edward. Edward Merquise." He says with a proud smile on his face.

"Edward, what a beautiful name darling." Squeaks the tired birth mother on the extravagant bed. Daniel quickly leers at the woman, then snaps his fingers for an attendant. Two young elves immediately come to his side. Daniel leans close to one and whispers into his ear. The elvish attendant stares at him confused and hesitates.

    "Now!" Daniel shouts emphatically.

The two elves run to the sides of the bed, and grab the woman laying on it. With some trouble, they lift her up and carry her out of the room in a hurry. As she is being carried over the threshold, she cries out to her love Daniel, "but my darling! No, wait! Please, my child!"

Daniel laughs with obvious glee, "I have what I need from you woman! Be gone!" He looks back to his son. Pride beams off him like the sun off a mirror. "My wealth, my empire, my … no, OUR family name will spread with your help someday Edward! Our blood is better than ANY other. Let no one make you think otherwise."

During the years Edward saw and learned much through his infancy. More than the average child anyway. He saw one woman a year move into his house, fall in love with his father, give birth to a child and then be removed from the building. He saw his father buy his way into title, council and nobility in the city. Most did in Athkatla however, the city of coin. How his father came about his mass fortune, Edward never knew. Since he had never seen his father without coin, it was just a fact of life to him.

On Edwards thirteenth birthday, his father approached after the celebration. "It is time Edward. You shall now begin your journey to spread our empire. First, you will attend the finest school my coin will get you into. You will become a fine swordsmen, a great mind and a brilliant business man! ah ha ha!" Edward looked up to his father, and this was the first time he had shown Edward any bit of attention since his birth. He gladly shared a laugh with his father.

"Now, as I was graced with my name by my father, Grant the Graceful. I shall now give you a name. You are Edward the Elegant! Do that name proud my son. You are the best of the best. There is no one to match your wits and your .... smiles Elegance!"

"Father ... thank you!" Edward leans in and hugs his father. This moment remains the happiest of his life. Edward quickly ran to pack his things, and off to school he went after two days time.

Edward thrived at his schooling. His swordplay, though perceived as cowardly, showed impressive results. Having grown up in an extravagant household, he was very familiar with precious and expensive items and materials. His time spent at the school was enjoyable .. for him.

the following is a progress report from the headmaster at "The School for the Refined Swordsmen" in Athkatla

    Dear Sir Daniel Merquise:

You're son, Edward, has been nothing but trouble ever since he began classes at this school 4 years ago. Had your most recent donation not just arrived, I would have kicked him out before graduation. His behavior towards the other students is unacceptable! He constantly believes him above them all. He even refers to my staff as "unintelligent, uncivlized commoners."

Even with all of these problems, he is one of the better students in nearly all classes … except ethics. Though it is irritating to see him in each class. In swordplay, he hides behind the largest shield he can find then swipes at the toes of his sparring partner when they become tired. This is hardly the type of behavior we endorse here! Seeing his progress in business classes made me believe there was hope. However this only gave him motivation to scam other students from their lunch money and other valuables.

I honestly cannot wait to be rid of your son. If I must graduate him to have him leave, so be it. Dirty tactics, scam artists and snobs are not the type of children we hope to raise here in our school. I ask that you please teach him some discipline at home. For your family names sake, and for the sake of anyone who will ever meet Edward.

    end of progress report

Edward returned home, a graduate. He knew what needed to be done now. His father wanted nothing else but for their family name to spread throughout all the lands. So he asked his father where he should begin.

"I know of a place Edward. It will be easy for me to get you housing and some backing there. We only need to flash some coin. ah ha ha!" In two weeks time after that, Edward set off for Peltarch.
