Nathan is now dead. DMs should respond faster to these things. I thought the idea was to help out the characters. >:pA short story of Nathan's past.
As a child, Nathan Arniman was well cared for and had the best tutors. His mother and uncle were two of his first teachers while his father was kept busy with the family’s large merchant company. When Nathan showed signs of an interest in magic, his uncle gladly began teaching him the theory and practice of magic. When Nathan’s uncle became busy with his own business, Nathan was sent to a local wizard to continue his magic studies. From the wizard, Nathan studied hard to carefully master the forces of magic and he learned of the goddess, Mystra. At the same time as he studied magic, his family found a leather briefcase of drawings. Wonderfully drawn portraits and landscapes that had been drawn by Nathan in his free time. His mother began spreading the message that her son was a master artist and soon, men and women from all over Peltarch began to commission Nathan to draw for them. Between his magic studies and his portraits, Nathan was kept happily busy.
However, on one occasion, he was drawing a not-so beautiful baroness, who was always vain and was complimented by everyone around her. Knowing this, Nathan tried to follow the example and tried to draw her in a way to compliment her. But, when he was finished, the baroness saw something in the portrait that no other mirror had revealed before. Nathan had drawn her in simpler clothes, but had her in a joyful mood surrounded by her friends with genuine happy expressions on their faces. But being the short-sighted woman that she was, she could only see the simple clothes and the “simple-minded” expressions on herself and her closest friends.
Seething, she refused to pay for the portrait, and demanded some outrageous amount of gold to “ease the emotional pain this portrait has done”. The Arniman trade business had not been doing well recently, and Nathan’s parents could scarcely afford the amount that woman had demanded. The family did manage to pay the amount however, but the woman was not completely satisfied, and she worked continuously to undermine the family’s business.
Fed up with the matter, Nathan declared that he would strike out on his own. Cutting any financial ties with his family, he set out with some money and his belongings on a journey to Norwick, where he planned to go to the Spellweaver academy. Settling down in the local inn, he was greatly relieved to hear that soon after leaving, the baroness had left his family alone, and after a few weeks, died later at the hands of her husband.
