Llach Blackwood. The three gates
-
The Blackwoods have always been distanced. From elves, from the lesser races, even from each other. M'ea Blackwood was an Oracle. She spent her time making warnings, which were ignored. Prophesying disaster, which came anyway. Pointing out truths, which were twisted to fit the listeners perception of reality.
She gave up. Taking her leave of the camps she went out into the woods, to live alone.
Alone, when you are long lived, can become a burden. It is not known who found her. It is not known whether it was love, or not. What is known is that she became 'with child'.
From the start she trained him, to avoid her mistakes. To allow him to make his own new ones. She started with the gates, which became the touchstone for all he did and was.
-A child runs into the shelter tucked beneath a spreading pine tree babbling in elven-
"Ma ma ma ma ma. I sawr a fish and he had a string outa his mouth and was swimmin in circles an he was lookin righ up a me and ma ma ma come come come seee . . . please?"
-She sighs and puts down a dusty old tome.-
"Come, little one, show me the fish."
-They go to the stream where the fish, the victim of a botched fisherman has entangled the line in a branch.-
"See see see ma . See it?"
"I see, love. Now, is it right? Is that a true thing?"
-A small frown-
"It is real ma. See it? See?"
"No, Love. Is it something that should be? Is it a truth?"
-A small hand reaches out towards the fish, feels its pain and fear-
"no"
"Right. And what can we do for the fish?"
"um
um let it go?"
"It is hurt, child. It will not live in the wild for long. No we will take it for our supper. But we will end the pain swiftly, mercifully. But remember. Truth. We act the truth, we speak the truth. It is the first gate."
"gate?"
"A gate all your words must pass, my Love. let no word pass that does not stand the test of truth. It must be so, to be said."
-fade out, fade in to a slighty older child stalking, hunting, with his mother-
"There! There it is!"
-The buck turns at the sound and then vanishes into the undergrowth.-
"oops"
"You should not have yelled out, son. I saw it. Your words should have stopped at the gate."
"it was the truth. It was there!"
"No, not the gate of truth. The second gate, the gate of neccessity. If it does not need to be said, then do not say it."
"i see. you saw it so there was no need for me to say anything."
"Yes, it would have stopped at the second gate."
"ma?"
"Yes son?"
"can i still say i love you?"
-She smiles fondly, her heart warming at the wiftness of his understanding of the gates-
"Do you doubt, my love that I would ever forget that?"
-He smiles and gives her a hug. He never said 'I love you' to her again, but he never ever stopped hugging her.-
-Fade out and fade in to a elf, now full grown smiling at his mother. She hands him a club, lovingly carved from an old tree by the stream. He takes it and slings it to his side. Their eyes meet and the time stretches out. Each smiles in turn, no words being needed. He hugs her and she hugs back.-
"Son. I did not tell you. There are other gates."
"More than two?"
"Many more. But they are different for each person, IF they even have any. You must decide your own gates, as you now must decide your own path. I have given you a love of the wilds, of Fenmarel Mestarine. You have begun to show the signs of becoming even more . . .one with the woods. Follow that path, my son. But know that at the other end of the path . . . I am here."
-He stood a while, in thought. Then he decided, smiled, and hugged his mother goodbye.-
"Your cousins moved to the north, towards the Rawlins forest. The gypsies near there know me. This letter will introduce you."
-He just smiled and put the letter in his pack. Smiling, he whistled. A howl answered from the distance. With quickening strides he disappeared into the wild woods.-
-She watched after him for a long time. In her minds eye she saw him weave in and out of the shadows of the woods, getting further with each passing moment.-
"I love you, Llach." She whispered.
