((Author's note: This takes place some time after the last post in "Heaven Bound - Kara's New Diary." For even more info on this person, check out "A Quest for Tyr - Diary of Kara Willendt." No, I'm not expecting the reviewer to go read those in addition to this story as part of the review. ))
"This is not acceptable, Kara!"
The Lady of Mysteries was again upset at her. The flame-haired woman who had come under Mystra's wing stood before the goddess, having failed yet again in another task to learn her newfound abilities. The hound archon, Maxis, sighed. This argument was becoming a daily occurance now, and he tired of hearing it even if the goddess and her apprentice did not seem to tire having it.
"Honestly, Kara," the goddess continued, "how do you expect to do what needs to be done if you keep holding yourself back?"
The young woman's green eyes already started forming tears. Maxis supposed that Kara really did tire of this.
"I try," she replied with a shakey voice.
Mystra just frowned and shook her head, "Don't try. Do it. Let go of your mortality. I'm sick of hearing this, 'I try,' excuse. You aren't trying hard enough. You need to shed yourself of your mortality if you are to become-"
"I can't!" Kara cried out.
The goddess gazed at Kara intently. "Why not?"
"I can't let go of him. I've tried, mistress, I truly have. Though I miss my life, my family, and my friends, I have tried to let go of it all. I've tried to let go of the emptiness I feel. But when it comes to him, I just… I can't." Tears began to fall from the woman's eyes.
Mystra paused to regard Kara. The woman was fairly pretty, especially her flame-red hair and green eyes. Her freckled face easily showed that her heart was full of compassion. While Kara did not seem overtly powerful, it was apparent in her eyes that a special fire burned inside her. A look at her true soul would show just how strong, and dangerous, that fire could be. It was Kara's true self that was the sole reason for Mystra training her.
"Let go of whom?" Mystra asked, her voice losing some anger.
"Braeth," she replied with a half-sob. "I love him too much to let go."
The goddess nodded with a furrowed brow and turned away. Kara bowed her head and left. Maxis raised an eyebrow after the scene had played out. It went differently today.
"There's only one way to fix this," Mystra said aloud to Maxis. "I should have realized it before."
The hound archon tilted his head, "Mistress? What do you mean?"
The goddess nodded and sat down in a large chair. At the nod, the archon could sense something happened.
"What did you do to her?" he asked worriedly.
A light suddenly engulfed Kara, who was sitting on her bed crying. She stood up, meaning to find out what was going on. A strange feeling crept over her, as if the very air was thickening so that she could not move. The light intensified, and suddenly vanished, taking the flame-haired woman with it.
"Something I think I should have done a while ago," the goddess replied to her archon servant. "She's not ready. She needs to be whole, but her soul is torn from the bond she shares."
"Bond? With the elf, Braeth? But I thought that was severred by him?"
Mystra shook her head. "She thought so too, but it's there. And deep in her heart, she needs him."
Strange sensations burst across the land of Narfell. It was as if reality was twisting. A wave of deja vu was felt by all. Time almost seemed to pause.
The phenomenon focused on the town of Norwick. There, three stones stood, an old portal from a long lost empire. Three people stood witness to the strange magics that suddenly converged on the portal. The first, Cyrian, a member of the town miltia. The second, Khaya, a priestess to the Binder. The third, Braeth Ma'Fein, the moon elf who had taken the form of drow long ago to rescue a friend from the foul beings.
The wind howled as waves of magic pulsed from the portal stones. A few were strong enough to knock the three witnesses from their feet. As the magic incresed, the image of a silver woman began to appear and disappear. Suddenly, the magic converged on the image and burst one last time, leaving behind the woman who immediately collapsed to the ground.
Cyrian was the first to approach her. The woman's flame red hair was a curly mess. The silvery dress she wore shimmered, it's material something the three had never seen before. Braeth suddenly collapsed, as he began to feel a long lost bond returning. He could scarcely believe his eyes and prayed several times that this was not a joke.
She was back. Kara Willendt was back.
"But what about her true self, her soul?" Masix asked the Lady of Mysteries. "It was almost corrupted before you took her away. If that should happen again..."
"It won't. I've sealed her. The only powers she'll display are those I specifically grant her. Let her live the rest of her life with her love, and then return to me when she is ready."
Maxis nodded. Though his approval was not necessary, he knew it was appreciated.
