"There's something in there, Lauris, we have to find out." His voice was overwhelmed with curiosity, smiling exitedly. Lauris chuckled, shaking her head and smiling. Her blond hair streaking down her wood elf ears, eyes sparkling with interest. The hooded man chuckled a moment. "Come on, the others want to see just as much as we do…"
…
The fire cackled and cracked on the stone cliff, the eight sitting around it. On logs, stones, or on the ground, the eight conversed silently.
"We shouldn't of gone inside..." Lauris' empty, low, infantile voice hushed around the fire. The hooded man frowned, gritting his teeth and gripping the shortsword hilt on his belt. "...Lauris... Remember when we thought I was the only one who hadn't lost anything?" The rest around the camp fire turned to face the hooded man and the wood elf.
A cackle was heard in the campfire, crickets sounded in the forest around the stone cliff which they all sat.
"...I do." Her deathly, lifeless face turned towards him. He exhaled slowly, lowering his face downward and continuing lowly. "My past... I don't remember anything." His voice was dark, low, grim, slow.
Peider, Trion, Chrace, Memnoch, Lauris, Dreil and Xenar all turned to face him, eyes widening slightly. Except for Lauris, who was the one stripped of her emotion, and Peider, who's white, lidless, blind eyes couldn't focus properly. He was the one removed of his sight.
Hooded figure had lost his memory. "...I see." Lauris' infantile, slow, voice peirced the silence. "...Do...You...Remember your name? ...Because I do not." Her empty gaze focusing itself onto the hooded man. He shook his head angrily. Lauris slowly turned towards the six others.
The campfire cackled.
The human of the group, Trion, shook his shaven head. He moved his lips - only to curl them back and look down. He started to sob. Trion was the one who had lost his ability to speak.
Lauris slowly looked to the next, awaiting the answere to her question about the Hooded Man's name and past. Did any of them remember?
Xenar sat beside Trion, the half-orc's beedy brown eyes narrowing curiously. "Why is Trion crying?" His voice was blunt. "He... lost his ability to speak... Xenar." Lauris' hollow voice replied. Xenar furrowed his thin half-orc eyebrows upward, not understanding. This was normal. Xenar was the one who was stripped of any fear whatsoever.
She turned towards the other four, each shook there head in turn, then back to the Hooded man who was holding his head in his hands, staring into the fire.
It cackled and burned.
...
Four years pass. A hooded wood elf walks into Norwick's northern gates. She looks down, finds dirty citizenship papers. Slowly, she leans and picks them up. Carefully, she places them in her pack. She continues, knowing he had to be here. Knowing this was the last place she would ever look. "It's about time." He appeared before her, his hooded visage covered in darkness. "...Shadowstrider... Hello." Her voice hadn't changed. Her voice, her expression, was still as lifeless and empty as ever since the accident. "...Have you... Found out more about your past... Or your real name, Shadowstrider?"
The visage inclines his hooded head. "No. Shadowstrider will do for now anyway. What about the others, are they with you?" Slowly, carelessly she shakes her head. "...But they have been looking for you. ...We... All were when you left." The deathly undertone in her voice easily mistakable for softness.
"Very well. We will all be together again soon enough. How goes your training?" The visage circles the wood elf, she doesn't budge an inch. She keeps looking forward as the dark visage circles her. "He watches over me." As if by instinct she adjustes the faceless mask attached to her belt. "Good enough. Your demeanor suggests you still havent found your emotions yet." Slowly, she nods at his words. He continues, "Look around. Familiarise with the envirenment. If you need me, wish it, I am watching. I do not let the people of these lands see me fully." Slowly, he repeats himself. "If you need me, or if you find the others, I will be around."
Slowly, carelessly, she nods.
"Now do as I suggested and familiarise yourself with the area."
Her empty face nods.
The visage then slips back into darkness.
