Journal Entry #57 – The Lurking in the Deep
Strange reports of possible undead operations have come to me through miss Nalum this day. From her words, I have gathered that a creature of sorts, vampire most likely, has taken refuge in the swamps. She has come to me in fear for her life, as herself and her companions have faced if, and were granted their lives by it in return for a given task to be completed within a month. It would appear that the month is due, yet neither of them are willing to complete the task given, to retrieve a certain gem, out of fear of what they might bring forth.
Miss Nalum is safe within the confinements of our home for now. I will…
[several pages have been carefully torn out of the journal at this point, and the following has been added to the bottom of the page, from the same hand, but apparently hastily scribbled.]
My honor is my life… forfeit now at the mercy of Lord Helm.

Journal Entry #56
Finally I sit at our fire again, out of this armor and close to home and heart. The journey has taken me near to two months in the whole, so to see Jiyyd safe and my husband in good health has been most heartwarming. Yet even as I have barely had the time to refresh myself, the news of the past two months has come to me. And with every word I hear of it, I curse the failed result of my own venture, and the fact that it has diverted me from home for so long.
War has been in Jiyyd. War with the Orcs that had been at the gates at my departure. From what I’ve been told, it has erupted only hours after. Sam and miss Lucia have died, fallen in duel over the fate of Jiyyd, their fate up to now unknown. A paladin by the name of Darian Stalwart has come to these lands to investigate Sam’s demise. From what he has told me, there is more at hand than seems at first. Yet I must learn more before I can draw any valid conclusions.
Furthermore the lands have been beset by the darker races of the deep, and it would seem that the Drow are near, posing a large threat to us all. The assaults on the Temple haven’t stopped. I hear of undead risings, of bone constructs having been called by an unknown force from the well. These lands are no more in mere turmoil, they have lost the control of common sense and have fallen into pure chaos. There is much work to be done, if we are to overcome what may still lie ahead.
Tonight I will try to meet with sir Eram and Kanen for an update on these matters. Atleast some good news has been brought as well, as it would appear that Kanen has been able to overcome the Lich in Minthas Rhelgor. Atleast this menace has been dealt with. May the Watcher grant us insight, and guard us all against the storms ahead.

Journal Entry #50
I have left our home this night, for news has come to my attention on the group calling itself the Black Hand. One of their operatives has been reported in the vicinity, so I must move swiftly. If the news proves valid and I can apprehend him, he could shed more light on them. Speed and silence are required in this, as they have eluded us too many times already.
The Orcs had been at the gates right before I was to depart. They have been stopped for now, but one of their commanders uttered warnings of war. I pray Jiyyd will remain safe while I am gone. May Helm guard them all.
Journal Entry #51
For the first time I can share a hot meal and a warm bed again. A week has passed through rain and cold, as the trail has led me beyond the Nars and the barren lands beyond it, to the small hamlet where I have taken up lodgings for the night. Tomorrow the search continues. Perhaps my informant will be able to shed more light on the situation, and at least provide me with a fitting description of the person I seek. For tonight, I can but think of home, and hope that all is well.
Journal Entry #52
This search has become more troublesome than I had imagined. Yet all evidence points to the fact that I am indeed on the right track. My informant was found dead this morning, a knife in the back having been his fate. Apparently my presence has not come as unnoticed as I had wished it to be. Although he has not been able to speak on the matters at hand, the tracks lead further east, back into the wilds. Two men of this town have been reported missing as well. Perhaps my quarry is amongst them.
I have hired the skills of a decent tracker to assist me in the hunt. He keeps rather to himself, but he is skilled enough in having lead us this far, and at least he can listen to the reason of coin for his efforts.
We leave at once, when the horses are packed and ready. I dare not send word home for now, as it is quite apparent that trust is futile in these parts. The Hand must learn as little as possible of my current search, lest all efforts become in vain.Journal Entry #53
After more than a week of chase, we are finally closing in on our quarry’s trail. The fire we came across a few hours ago was still hot to the touch, and it would seem to have been left in a hurry. The trail still points to two men, so I can but assume that this operative had an affiliate nearby. It would be most pleasing to catch both, as they could perhaps divulge some crucial information towards the whereabouts of the Black Hand quarters. We must be careful now not to make any mistakes. As long as the weather holds, we might be able to catch them by nightfall.
Journal Entry #54
Damnation as fate appears against us in this, for the trail is gone. Our quarry has fled our sights, and no trace of him remains. We discovered their camp for the night quite easily, as the fools had left their fire burning. We decided to wait until they had fallen asleep, to minimize the chances of escape. Yet the weather was once more against us in this. We were forced to move in sooner as mist began settling quickly in these woods. We caught them by surprise initially, and it seemed like the battle would be won sooner than it had begun, when one of the two men evaded my prayers of silence and darkened the area, leaving is disoriented. I heard a muffled cry and tried to lunge out, but found nothing. When the darkness lifted, one of the men lay dead on the ground, the other gone from sight. We tried to catch his trail again, but none was left. It was as if he had vanished into thin air. There is nothing left to do now but return and call off the search, for in these wilds, there is no further hope of regaining the trail within due time. Over a month has passed on this already, and I cannot allow my attention to be diverted from Jiyyd any longer. I can but hope that the man does not alert his superiors towards my presence here, yet I fear that such are idle hopes indeed.
Journal Entry #55
We have returned at the small village from where the search had begun, and here I part ways with my companion. I have paid him handsomely for his skills and his silence. Tonight I will remain here, and make my provisions for the return back home.

Journal Entry #49
Peace has been our part for the last few days, peace wished for and granted at last. Peace enjoyed, even if it is to be but brief. My days have been filled with negotiations, as funds need to be raised for the construction of new watchtowers. Ties with the Red Army are tightening, and such can only prove to be beneficial to the town of Jiyyd.
Yet dark news has come to my attention as well, for one of our own has become the target for murder, and the Temple, however glorious it may stand now, has become grounds for desecration and ill practices. Such can and will not be ignored. We must all be vigilant now, as I am certain more is yet to come.

Journal Entry #48 – A Wedding Party Disrupted
The feast erupted with loud cheers and well-wishings as friends gathered all around to celebrate this memorable day. I was proud to now stand beside the man that I have come to love, to call him husband now, and both the look in his eyes and his loving hold told more truth than any word ever could in that he felt alike. Yet even with so many friends and all the valiant hearts gathered, none could stop the disaster that struck amidst all joy, as pitch black darkness fell over us, and I could feel his warming touch no more.
My heart stopped in fear a moment as realization came to mind, and when the darkness lifted, the truth was shown: he was gone. My husband now, Bottesini, who had been sitting with me and holding my hand but a moment before, was gone from our midst, vanished in thin air. All rushed to arms, scattering around the town to find any trace as Sam handed me armor and sword, standing ready to my defense. Soon, word came that a strange being had been noticed just a moment before the darkness fell, and that a mysterious pillar of light was seen at the ruins of Minthas Rhelgor, and but a moment later a slight gust of wind drew me in that direction. Knowing Helm to be on our side I set out at once, bent on returning him to our midst. Most of those that had come to the feast now followed, weapon at ready, angered to such a sheer sign of defiance as to disrupt a feast of wedding in such a way. We had but reached the gates of the dreaded city when battle already erupted. Men of foul hearts and minds, swearing allegiance to none but darkness, blocked our path as the accursed undead clambered down upon us. Prayers to Lords of both darkness and light clashed as steel met upon steel in such a fierce manner that only harsh anger could bring forth. All our foes were dealt with in cold blood, Helm’s might ever present against the enemy within our sight. Many fell, yet none were allowed the life after, as His will alone allowed them to stand once again. Strike after strike we made our way to the beam of light beyond. Then, one by one, we stepped through.
We found ourselves in unknown surroundings a moment later. Plains were all around, and the lands themselves felt eerie, unwelcoming. Yet there was no time for discovery. The road was ahead, and so we made haste upon it. Suddenly we all came to a stop when a dark figure blocked our path. Those that had witnessed him swore to the fact that the being was the one seen when my love was taken. Uthger and Nails tried to subdue him as I pleaded for an explanation and demanded to know where he was held. Yet the creature merely growled, strongfully eluding both grasps and pushing myself aside with unearthly ease. We followed it’s tracks as it fled, yet it vanished to our eyes at a nearby crossing. Fate directed us away from our true path as we decided to venture on in our set direction, and came upon a ghostly town a few moments after. We searched high and low for any sign or track, but found none but the ghastly remains of the former inhabitants. Finding nothing we set out once again, leaving the town for what it was. We stumbled upon another portal soon after, and when all were gathered we once again passed through.
Portal after portal lead us farther away from the lands we all know so well, until finally one allowed passage to an ancient construct, a temple dedicated to such dark lords that I do not even wish to recount them here. For all that we could think of it we had come to bowels of the earth. Fire raged all around as we valiantly went forward, bent on reaching our final destination, wherever it might be. Once more we came upon portals, a set of two side by side. It was there that fate struck me once again, as the decision was called for to split up and try each of the portals before us…
I stepped through the one in front, and found myself in Norwick but a moment later. The choice had been wrong, and towards this day I can not bear to forgive myself for allowing this mistake to be. I made my way back to Jiyyd and to the very gates of Minthas Rhelgor. Jaroo, Eram and Yurana were waiting there, having stepped through the same portal and failed as well. We tried to learn if the portal still existed as it was our only further lead, while I prayed that the others had not made the same choice.
My prayers were heard soon after as my heart was filled with the knowledge of his safety: I knew he was alive, and home.He stood there, exhausted and weary, along with Bacelar and Uthger. Fate had dealt it’s hand, and they had succeeded where I had been able to but watch in the shadow. I hold my utmost gratitude towards their valiancy, for they have returned what was denied. May Helm shield them from any dangers from this day forth.

Journal Entry #47 – The Wedding
Tonight the long awaited moment has finally come to pass. Through all that has been and all that is yet to be, the bond we share has been forged under Helm’s Watchful Eye, sealed by the love that we both hold deeply. From now on, I call him husband, and he calls me wife. Yet with all that has been against us, even this night was not granted in peace. It is a whimsical path that fate leads us on, yet for all I know to be right, it cannot hold us apart. Once more the bridge has been conquered, and with all that our foes would lay in our way, it but brings us closer once again. The Gods have watched over this union, and they have smiled upon it and on the hearts that it would bind. I feel him closer than ever now, a bond forged beyond the boundaries of what mortality could bear. Even when our roads do part - as they too often do - I know he is well, I feel it in my heart, and that feeling alone brings the joy and peace that both of us have so long craved for.
The road from the Helm’s Hold had been long and tiring, yet fate and good fortune had speeded my safe return, as it remained uneventful until the gates of Jiyyd once more loomed in the distance. The summons had been welcomed when I left, but the month away from home and heart had been long and tiring. As such, it was to my joy when I pushed open the wooden gates that sealed Jiyyd from the outside, only to see my love foremost already standing there, awaiting my return in both smile and anxiety for what was to pass when darkness would come. The day itself was filled with many a thing as the final preparations neededto be made, yet even as both good and bad wishes came our way, and when near to anything that could go wrong seemed to happen, all was set in time for the ceremony at hand.
As the time drew near and the temple, finally being in the glory that it deserves, was gradually filling with friends, loved ones and brothers both in arms and faith, I took to myself in final prayer. It was then that I knew for sure that the choice had been right, that even the Gods this day smiled upon this union, as I felt His presence near once again, casting away whatever fears or doubts I might still have had with but a slight breeze. ”He is watching, always…” It was faint, yet I heard, and knew it to be more truth than anything else, for but a moment later His grace filled my heart once more with pride and strength, as the voices softly whispered His blessings towards this day. A few moments later, the rumors in the temple halls beyond fell silent, as Kanen opened the door in sign that the ceremony was about to begin. It was with a sense of pride and dignity that I took my steps into the shining halls, and laid eyes once more upon my love, the look in his own granting me all the strength I needed to take the final steps towards the altar, sir Eram, and him. All turned to silence when Eram looked upon the crowd and then us both in warm smile, his calm voice glamoring through the hall…
“We are now gathered to celebrate the wedding between Bottesini Lichmar and Lady Shane Andryl” . The words came gently, yet brought us all to attention as they marked the beginning of the ceremony that would bind us under Helm’s grace. In recognition, he spoke a few words of thanks to all that contributed to towards the Temple’s renovation, as surely without them we would not have been blessed with our presence within it’s walls this day. After a silent prayer was called for in gratitude, Eram continued.
”Through the teachings of Helm, the bond that we celebrate is one of protection, trust and watchfulness. Thus, the couple will anticipate each other's needs. Moreover, they will be dedicated and loyal. They will protect one another. Finally, they will share their joys, pains, hardships and friendships. Through these teachings, they will know, experience, receive and give love under Helm's Watchful Eye. Let it be known, if you wish to stop this union to take place, talk now or be silent forever…” With a gentle, loving look we awaited the silence, and the look in his eyes told me more than I needed to know. Not a single word would be raised, for we knew it to be right. Yet the moment of silence, however short, seemed to last a lifetime, before Eram’s voice broke it once more.
”Bottesini Lichmar, do you wish to be with Lady Shane Andryl, to laugh and cry with her, to cherish her and finally love her until death and beyond ?” He looked upon me with a gentle smile, his voice soft in reply as he stated his own wish to do so. “And nothing more”. It was but a moment later that the same question was posed once more, this time directed to my own. ”Lady Shane Andryl, do you wish to be with Bottesini Lichmar, to laugh and cry with him, to cherish him and finally love him until death and beyond ?” The words came sooner than I would even think them, and with pride I stated my own. ”I do so wish it.” Eram smiled as he called Zak - one of my truest friends since I came to these lands - to bring forth the rings, offering his blessings to them on the altar before handing them to us. After we both fulfilled our part in exchanging the rings to one another, it was with joy that Eram spoke his final words, allowing us to seal the union with that gentle kiss that has been lying in want for all this time. ”With the powers invested in me through Helm, the Vigilant One, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You can now kiss the bride….”
[OOC:I wanted to write this up as it was, just because of the great efforts that Fishel has made towards all of this in playing the role of Eram. Thanks for that!]

Journal Entry #46
The White Wraith, Mel’hrus, Jubei: three names that sound distant, yet I know the meaning all too well. Kanen has spoken on them before, and I know of the ill that they mean not only to himself directly, but to the Order and the lands of Narfell. Yet from this day on, they will sound closer than ever before.
Much has passed in so few days, and there still is much to learn. Sam has shed some light on the matters concerning the orb which has been entrusted to Kanen by Roubanes. I have been told of by him of a plan that might root these assassins of the White Wraith out. But to all that I hold dear, it does not bode well. It matters not to me whether or not this plan would involve my husband to be, although I do fear for his life should it spring into action. It just does not feel right, the course of action is not one that I would ever consider taking, not in my wildest dreams, as it involves too much chance and too little certainty to success. Yet somehow, I know that it may be the only way. We must gather a meeting with Kanen soon, and discuss the options that lie ahead. Although the burden is theirs, they cannot stand alone in this no more. For this, these vile beasts have caused too much already. Their intrusion into Kanen’s house just this night proves once more what a threat they pose. And if what Sam says is true, if they truly hold the Crystallis Draco, then we cannot afford to wait any longer.

Journal Entry #45 – Riddles in the Dark
Amidst all that seems important off late, what occurred this day may indeed seem but trivial. Yet even the smallest things can sometimes prove to be the largest in manner or mind.
It was a simple “Well met” that turned the head of the joyful hin. I had seen him often in town already, always running from here to there and back again. It was calm, the Orcs were even keeping their peace near the East road for a change, so the casual conversation was a fine change indeed. Johan he said his name was, and he eagerly told me of his reputation as being the finest errand-runner in these parts. The proud look on his face told me enough truth to his words. It soon became quite apparent though that the hin was plagued with problems, as the proud look vanished as quickly as it had come as well. He told me of 2 errands he had needed to do earlier, and of the problems he had encountered. He had been asked to bring a ring to the Head of Council here in Jiyyd, as a gift from the mayor of Norwick, to ensure good relations between the two towns.
Instead of delivering the ring directly, he had decided to finish a second errand first, which had involved cleaning the house of the deceased bard, Adam Bromley. He had lost the ring there to rats that had scurried to the upper rooms. As I wondered what a few rats would pose as threat against the young hin, he pleaded my help in retrieving the ring. There was, as he said, a security measure of sorts that was posing a bit of a problem.
More curious than anything else, I decided to help the little one, and followed him to the house in question. I soon saw the nature of this means of defense: a mechanical monster of steel blocked the entire stairway. Instantly I knew what this creature was, as I had seen it before with the mage of Ormphur: a golem! I could understand all too well why the hin was so afraid of attempting to pass it. As I drew near, the golem turned, as if a spell of sorts set it in motion, and with a cold clattering voice it echoed a request for an answer to three riddles, were I to gain passage beyond it. As common sense dictated that my sword, however fine and sharp it might be, would not be able to even scratch the surface of this massive steel giant, and as I had no wish to feel the metal fist pounding in to me, I decided to try my luck in riddle first.
The answer to the first question posed came faster than the voice had been able to die away. It was obvious, and I but hoped that the rest would prove as such as well. The second question though brought such wavering to my mind that I needed to reflect on it. Perhaps it was the hin’s shuffling and scurrying about that distracted me to the matter, but I nearly feared that steel would need to meet steel when the answer came through the fog that clouded it’s true meaning. After this, the third question posed was but a final obstacle to take, the answer clear as water as my mind had awakened once more to the matters that lay beyond. Without further notion, the massive steel giant moved aside, allowing us passage. The ring was swiftly recovered, the rats dealt with to the hin’s great joy.
However trivial this might have been, I can but reflect on what would have happened had this ring not been returned. If word of it had come out, either the hin would have been marked a thief, or Jiyyd been branded a liar… and only the Gods know what could have come from that. Towards this end, it might not have been so trivial after all. The question still remains though what to do with the golem itself. Though it’s task is done, it still stands quietly in the house. Perhaps the Ormphur mage will know an answer.
After all, he holds such a warden as well.

Journal Entry #44
Helm is with me this day. I know it and feel it as never before. I am strong within His grace as His warmth even now fills my heart and soul. I know once more the path that I must take. With all the darkness that looms before, and all the dark tidings that have come, many of which I cannot even as such speak of yet, I know there is light beyond. In the end, we will overcome. And into that knowledge I continue upon the path that He has laid down before me.

Journal Entry #42
Juno… we have never been friends, such can be said in the least. I had hoped beyond all hopes that during the last few months he had gained some sense, and calmed down. Yet I believe the happenings off late, with Adela having part in them as well for sure, have finally driven him over the edge. He walks around raving, his hatred clear enough. Yet now, he has gone too far.
The paladin Alia, fellow knight of both faith and the Order, has been in his grasp, and from what I’ve learned from her, he has clearly gone insane. I feel that confrontation is soon to be. His words have become more spiteful, meant for nothing else but to lure me into battle. I can only pray that when the day comes, Helm shall grant the victory.
Journal Entry #43
The temple is nearing completion, the final preparations are well under way. And with it, the bond between man and wife shall soon be forged. The time has come to plan ahead for the day to come. Soon, all that was will be left behind, leaving the path clear for what the future might hold instead. I have sent word to my father’s home. Even in this time, when I have declined all that was rightfully mine, they have the right to know.

Journal Entry #41
Defilement!
My hands tremble with the anger that comes to mind even as I put this to writing. A curse upon the damned for such an act of heresy, praise to Helm for the punishment that was dealt through my hand. To find His Altar defiled, especially now when reconstructions have finally begun, has pained me more than the chill of death could ever do. The culprit has found his death, we tracked him down straight into the ruins of what once was Minthas Rhelgor. Towards that end, I have a good idea of what motivations had lead that heretic - I can not think of any word that would be more suited in description of such a despicable mind - towards his final act. The damage has been undone, the filth around cleaned, I have made certain of it myself. Yet I know the message to be clear.
The task had but just finished, and I had but barely taken a rest at the well to calm the moods, when Ragrin came rushing towards for aid, screaming out of foul abominations that had come from the swamps. Bottesini and I rushed towards the scene, followed by Validus, Rick and Luna, to find the devil hounds that had scared poor Ragrin so much. Creatures of shadow, black as night, their eyes flaring with the fiendish taint that drove them. They were dealt with swiftly, but we knew what was to come. A portal had appeared in the swamps, or these creatures would not have found their way from the Netherworlds to here. We were with but a handful, and although we knew that whatever lurked beyond could mean death to us all, we could not allow the portal to remain. I prayed to Helm for His guard, and we ventured on…
The battle was hard and painful. The fiends had come a plenty, and creatures that I can only refer to as stalkers as they are so oblivious that they easily elude any sight dealt harsh blows. Yet even as the tides turned darker than we could handle, all remained but Luna. I thank Helm unto this day that she had the strength of fear to guide her away from the horrors that we endured. I only wish that the others had been so fearfullas well. But I must respect them, for even when death and defeat drew near they remained standing alongside, and even well no more prayers could be called out and when sting upon sting weakened us to the point where we could no longer stand, they found the courage to fight on. We prevailed in the end, Bottesini’s mastery of the Arcane closed the portal that had allowed these abominations entry, but even as we tried to fall back with the last strengths that we could muster, defeat drew near. I heard Rick’s cries first, and even when I tried to muster all strength that Helm would still allow in saviour of his life, I saw my love fall down as well, his foe too strong for even him to overcome. Validus still stood, his armor thick in blood, and side by side we tried to fend off what remained. Yet even as my blade cut deep once again, I felt the icy sting of death as the pain seared through my back. With my last look on what around, I saw Validus fall onto his knees. In victory, we had failed.
I saw the light of life again under Tyr’s grace in Peltarch, lost for coin and a bit worse for wear, but alive and well. The others, and the one I have come to love… they were amongst us soon enough again. Luna had been able to find help in the guise of both Zora and Equinox amongst others, and through the help of good friends death has been avoided once more. At least we succeeded in closing the portal. I can but fear what might have been had we not remained for the sake of the town. It has shown the valiancy that even the weakest heart can hold in times of need.

Journal Entry #40
I have seen Validus today, and I thank Helm, for reason has come to his senses. For hours we have spoken on what was his heart’s desire, and in time he has seen the truth in what he had accomplished. Yet I have seen today how far a burdened heart can drive a man into acts of near insanity. When I left him to think on what he had done, he decided for himself to make peace with his brother’s passing in the only way that he saw fit: he took his own life.
I found his body in the swamps of Jiyyd, face down in the water. It had been the only way he could have seen to bid his brother farewell. He had gone himself to that distant place where none but the torment of death can be found. I took his remains to Vroka, and Helm be thanked that she was still able to bring life to his body once more. His will was strong enough to see what life might still offer him.
I know he is at peace now. His task accomplished, his farewell granted. Through the sorrow that has been his part, Glaeken can now finally rest. But the cost was high, too much for any mortal man to bear alone.

Journal Entry #39
Sam’s Hill is widely known as a beacon of strength and determination all over Narfell, as it has been the place where so long ago, many a valiant soul has stood in defense against the bandits that scour the Nars. It was the place where Sam defied their presence, and where battle after battle was fought until finally the bandits had given in. Many a tale has come to my ears on how bravely all fought and finally overcame.
But now, so many years after these events, the bandits have become all the more aggressive again. Several times now they have laid siege to the Hill once more, having claimed it their own in defiance of those that oppose them. Tonight their claims have been thwarted once more. I have stood there, amongst many a brave heart and strong arm, together with Sam to hold this point of defense. Wave after wave of these outlaws tried to root us from our post, yet we remained standing. For hours on, well into the dawning of the new day, the battle raged on, and while many fell, the prayers of faith kept us standing. Blow after blow was dealt towards outlaw and heretic alike, rain after rain of archery fire endured, while the skies soared with the crackling of the Arcane, and our hearts were bolstered by the cries of faith all around. Helm was strong amongst us, and with His aid, victory has come.
The Hill remains as it is, a beacon for the wary traveller as he knows that safety is once more near.

Journal Entry #38
Glaeken Triskanglikus.
The name sounds far and distant to me, a mere pointer to a face briefly seen and long forgotten, the name of a man long dead. Yet now it brings more questions than any answer can provide, for it is the source to the voices that have come to me in the dark of night when all else was quiet, a distant cry of help for reasons as of yet unknown. Today those voices have come again, stronger than any time before, and they have lead me to Helm’s sanctuary. It was there that once more the knowledge of what lies beyond has revealed itself in a most strange manner.
It was well night when I arrived there, and neither did I have time to see what might be, when the reason to my questions appeared before me, the shadow of the young man that I had but briefly seen before, yet somehow quaintly familiar. Helm’s grace did allow him to be there, the calling of His name did not bid him to leave, and towards that reason I awaited to learn what has been, and what might be still. He spoke to me, the voice faint and distant, as if it took him more strength than he could muster to even allow all this be. I learned his name then, Glaeken, and learned the story of his demise. I learned that he had been brother to Validus, a young man whom I have come to know well over the last few weeks. He told me how he had spent his life in service of Tyr, and I learned of his downfall, as he had fallen in the lair that the goblin witch Skara calls her home. His body had never been recovered, and it was for certain that his bones would now lie amongst the many other, gnawed upon by those foul creatures. Yet it was not the reason for his appearance.
He told me of his brother Validus, and of the pain that a brother would feel towards the passing of his kin. Validus had been striving for a long time now to try and recover his brother’s life, and had sent his prayers high so that the Gods themselves might know. His pain had denied Glaeken the life beyond under Tyr’s grace, as time and again this lost soul found himself trapped in the realms between, where life or death is decided by the whims of Gods and demons alike. For months now Glaeken had been waning, and soon, he would loose all strength that he could still muster, lost in oblivion for all times. He pleaded me there to reason with Validus, to show him the error of his way, to allow his brother his final peace.
I do not know if my words will be enough to bring reason to a heart filled with the pain of loss. Most probably, he will not even believe me, for his mind would be set on only this. Validus would surely perish should he try to recover the bones of what was once his brother. He lacks the strength and the will for it, yet determination can drive a man to foolish acts. For all I know, I must try. The dead should be granted their final peace.

Journal Entry #37
Between all that looms in the darkness, a shed of light comes at times as well, spreading joy to one’s heart as quickly as it would drive away the troubles within.
The last few months have driven us more closely than I could ever have dared to even think off. Yet today, all fear off the past is gone, all doubts as to where fate might lead us wiped away with but a few words. This day, he has overcome what ever fears he holds inside, for amongst the two of us and under Helm, he has asked my hand in marriage. By all that I know to be right and true, I cannot refuse this any longer. When reconstruction of the Temple has completed, I will allow the vows of marriage to seal the bond that already holds us so close. I shall then be Bottesini’s wife.

Journal Entry #36 – The Staff of Gendebar
I was in Jiyyd, taking some time to finally catch up on my reading near the well, when message came to me that the good Doctor of Ormphur requested my presence. The vague tone of his writings alarmed me, and I prepared to set out at once when both Jaroo and Master Lao found me, having been summoned to the Doctor as well. We discussed the matter a moment, fearing that perhaps the Black Hand had dealings once more in Ormphur, when the wise Scutum entered Jiyyd to check up on the construction of the Monastery. When she heard of the summons, she immediately decided to come as well, having had dealings with the Black Hand before in her own time. Without further ado, the four of us set out to learn of what dangers might lie in wait this time.
There was no sign of trouble whatsoever when we arrived near the peaceful town. To our surprise, the gates were unbarred, and we were allowed to enter freely. When we came to the Doctor’s stead, he was quite happy to see us once more, not indicating any trouble at all. This left us most intrigued as we wondered what it would be that he called us for. After a joyful exchange of welcomes and hospitalities, we learned from him that an Elven mage that had guarded Ormphur for years, had returned to his home after a long voyage. The tower where we had dealt the final blow to the Black Hand had been his home, and he wished to see us, thankful for our aid in dealing with these thugs. Honored by such a summons we set off to learn what the Arcanist could possibly want from us. We soon learned that, as is the case with most that dabble in arcane matters, there was more to the summons than merely thanks for our efforts in securing his home.
He told us the tale of Gendebar’s Staff, a powerful weapon that could shake the very earth itself and open up the ground to swallow armies whole. It had been destroyed ages ago by the proud Featherlights, the staff itself being kept as their relic in memory of the battle. The Arcanist told us about 3 gems that had been the Staff’s power, distributed amongst the greater powers of Narfell for safekeeping, so that the Staff may never be used again. He himself had done a lot of research on the matter, and he feared that it was this research that had brought the Black Hand to his home. His papers had been seen through, his home well-searched. If the Black Hand were to get hold of such a weapon of power, all would be lost.
The task that lay before us was simple: retrieve the gems from wherever they might lay hidden now, and see to their safety once more. We learned that the gems had once been given to 3 groups of power, capable of ensuring their safety: a diamond had been the guard of the Dwarves that once lived near Peltarch. Their stronghold now lay in ruins, the Dwarves all gone, but it was unknown whether or not the gem still lay there, hidden underneath the earth. An emerald had been given to the Mages of old in the Rawlins Wood, the Mages of the Three Towers. Though they too had long perished, the ruins of their towers still remain to this day, deep in Bugbear territory. The third, a ruby, was lost in time, having been sent to the Swordcoast and never heard from since. It had been the reason for the mage’s long absence, as he had travelled there to find any trace of it’s existence. I understood that the ruby I had found amongst the Black Hand’s belongings must be this gem he spoke off, and the realization struck us with dire need. We had to set out at once, for if the Hand had already retrieved this gem, they would surely know of the others as well. They could not be allowed to fall in their hands.
I could not place myself to trust the Elf fully at that time, for too many lies and treachery had already been our part in our dealings with the Black Hand. He might as well we wanting to gain the power of the Staff to himself. Yet his heart was pure on the matter, so, wary of treachery, we set out to try the task at hand. Jaroo and the Elf shared some ill-words regarding the placement of the Arcanist’s tower in an ancient grove, which made the Arcanist decide to not join us on this venture. We were offered a map of where the ancient ruins might be located, and left for Peltarch at once.
After a long search that had taken us deep into the Giant Territories, we stumbled upon a cave that was very near to where the Dwarven Stronghold had been according to the man. We fought our way through the creatures that had made their lair within it’s depths, until we finally came upon the remains of Dwarves, apparently having made their last stand stand there. We prayed for their souls, lost in the fragments of time, and searched for a clue that would lead us on. We found the diamond instead. The Dwarves had given their lives to protect it. Thankful for the fortune, we made certain the gem was safe, and set out to leave for the Rawlins. Before we could leave the cave, we were however beset by agents of the Black Hand. We had been just in time. Our enemy provided a tough battle, but with our combined efforts we prevailed, and set out with haste to try and recover the last of the gems, fearing the Black Hand would gain hold of it first.
The trip to the Rawlins Wood was quick and uneventful. It was as if Lady Luck herself was with us, for no foe came across our path to slow us down. Without pausing, we followed the little clues we had once more, and soon found ourselves in the lands that were prowled by the Bugbears. The towers were not difficult to find, yet they had not been discovered by us alone, all around, the clamor of spell and battle was heard as agents of the Black Hand fought for their lives against the Bugbear guards. We fended off what we could, being beset at all times by both parties, and searched the three towers carefully. It was a hard search, halted more than once by a Black Hand in our way, or the dodge from a Bugbear axe, but in the end we once more prevailed. The last gem found it’s way into our hands. Weary from the many battles that had led us to this victory, with all prayers cast and our armors thick in blood, both of our enemies as our own, we gathered what little strength we had left, and rushed back to Jiyyd. There, we made certain that the gems were safe, wary of any more dangers that might lay ahead. Then, we set out once more for Ormphur to report on our success.
The Arcanist was most pleased by our success, and to our relief he showed no anger when he learned that the gems had been secured. His thoughts on the matter were now clear, his intentions most noble in seeing the threat secured. Once more, the plans of the Black Hand have been thwarted. Another grudge for them to hold against us. As of the location of the gems, we have sworn secrecy, and to that cause I shall not record their whereabouts. They may never again fall into the wrong hands. The only thing that needs be known is that they are safe.

Journal Entry #35
The Orcs are planning more than we can possibly imagine. We rushed to the call of aid when a young Half-Orc came running towards us, scared to death by something he described as a “vicious hell-bound man-dog” that lurked near the eastern gates of Jiyyd. We set out at once with a few of us, believing it to be one of the lycanthropes that hunt the lands between Jiyyd and Ormphur. We had not taken but a few steps outside of the gates when we were beset by the creature, and dealt it swift freedom from it’s lycanthropic bounds. We remained in the area for a while, making sure that no others of it’s kind still preyed in the vicinity.
Suddenly, a small Orc patrol of veteraned warriors stumbled into us. We made sure they did not get away, and fearing that they might have been scouting for an attack, we gathered what help we could and searched out the area for more traces of these Orcs. Besides a few raiders, Orcs had normally not been reported near the road by any of the guards.
We came once more to the lycanthrope’s lair, where Tera and I had once discovered maps and odd journals in writings we could not comprehend. The Orcish guard that stood in front was dealt with swiftly, before he could call out the alarm. Knowing that the Orcs had seemingly made an advance post of the cave, we rushed in at once, only to find more veteraned Orcs near the entrance. It was a tough battle, but in the end, we prevailed. Now we know why those maps had been there. The Orcs had most probably been using the cave as a scouting post, so they could spy freely on Jiyyd and Ormphur. They have been dealt with, but we have to keep an open eye there now, for they could return and make use of it once more.

Journal Entry #34 – The Black Hand’s Revenge
The Black Hand has struck more quickly than we had hoped for. The blow we have dealt them must have been greater than we had imagined. Jaroo and I were having pleasant conversation at the well, himself being a most caring friend in keeping me company now that Bottesini has left for travel. Suddenly, darkness came upon, the calling card for the Black Hand, and as we drew steel expecting ambush, I heard a rustle behind his. I swung my blade, yet it was only air that I touched. When the blasted darkness lifted, all that remained was their mark, and a message demanding reimbursement for their losses: 6500 Gold for the worthless tin, and 10000 for having duped them with it. Strangely enough, the note did not mention the attack. Are they then that oblivious? It is clear that they have been hard-pressed, seeking bluff over action. To make matters worse they set fire to the local store a moment later. We could barely get the owner out alive and douse the flames before the whole town roared in flames. If by terror they wish to gain their way, they can have it. They know of me, and as such they must know as well that I cannot stand by idly as they try to gain hold in Jiyyd. I am only glad that Bottesini is away, for at least he is safe from them for now.
The fire had drawn enough attention, and when it became clear to those around that the Black Hand was behind it, many shouted to head out after them. Jaroo and I were already bent on going, and all help was appreciated, yet many of the calls came from boys that had hardly even held a blade before, let alone seen battle. I tried to reason with them while Jaroo went out for aid. After a few hours of planning and debate, we finally set off to the east.
We never went far before we once more saw the Black Hand’s dealings. Another caravan, headed towards Jiyyd, had been robbed by them, burnt to the ground and their guards pierced with spears. Yet this time they were still near, and battle erupted soon enough. When it became clear how fierce our opponent was, many fled the fight and ran for safety within Jiyyd’s walls once more. When the battle was over, only myself, Jaroo, Jirka, Lao Mei, Keleng and the lowly Shadowstrider remained. We barely took the time to tend to our wounds and bury the dead, before we pressed on to where the Black Hand was hidden.
This time we knew what to expect, and most of us were already well-known in close quarter battle. We took a moment to agree on tactics as Keleng and Shadowstrider scouted out the cave unseen. They returned with the news of traps and powderkegs that had been placed near the entrance, and archers behind them. This news worried us, as the powderkegs would surely kill all within if they would be set off. For a moment we pondered on destroying the entrance to the cave, trapping the Hand within, but as we didn’t know if there was another way out, the decision was made that 2 of us would go inside under the cover shielding magics, invisible to the archer’s eyes, and rush towards them. We would charge in behind them to take care of any that remained. Shadow had taken care of the traps in front, so that at least was one worry less. Obvious to the fact that it was a death trap, we said praise to our Lords, and charged inside.
The battle was swift and fierce. One by one the archers fell, unable to set fire to the kegs around. While Master Lao and Jirka brought them swift death, we rushed on to deal with the remainders of their force. It was over within a few breaths, yet of their leader we found no trace…
And then, the trap sprung. While we were in the back of the cave, an explosion shook the surroundings, and dust rose up as boulder after boulder blocked our only way out. Our fears had come true. They had expected us all too well, and had sacrificed some of their hands to lure us inside. Now we were trapped, and to make matters worse, we soon after noted oil seeping down the boulders, being set to fire a moment after. They wished to deal us a swift death for sure. Their tactics all the more prove the fear they harnish for our possibilities.
There was a pool of water in the back, so we quickly dove in, catching as little fresh air as we could. Keleng found a way through, and after some trouble, we all pressed our way through it. We gasped for fresh air a few moments later, finding us in another cavern, while fire roared at the spot where we had been a few moments before. We had barely managed to escape, but we lived! Angered by their treachery, and strengthened in the knowledge that they would now consider us dead, we donned armors again and set out to find where they had gone to. Keleng’s excellent tracking skills led us to an old tower near Omphur. Taking no time for rest, we rushed in, knowing that this time surprise was on our side. The fierceness of our assault struck the remainders of the Black Hand with terror, and one by one they fell to our blades and bows.
We charged the tower under cries of battle, until in the end only one remained: the one who had before demanded our taxes, the one who had mocked us at our previous efforts, their leader. He stood there, apparently unimpressed by our actions. We knew it to be bluff, yet we allowed him speech before his life would come to an end. Yet he kept his taunts, ensuring us that the Black Hand was still strong, that he had been but a local authority to their cause, and that they would surely retaliate. The battle that followed was the fiercest yet. I must admit that I have not yet faced an opponent this skilled. Not even the Orcish Destroyers were match to his skill. Both Jaroo and Strider fell, and I myself was saved by healing graces just in time, but in the end we all prevailed, many thanks to the courage of both Master Lao and Jirka. The lowlife’s lifeless corpse was all that remained.
The healer in Ormphur was most thankful when he heard of our actions. At least for Ormphur, the Black Hand’s reign has been stopped. He gladly saved both fallen’s souls, and returned life to their bodies once more. Now, we must warn Jiyyd. I will call for council, for while the Hand has been dealt a terrible blow, they are still around. We have learned that they hide to the west of Jiyyd as well, yet their exact location is as of yet unknown. Now that Ormphur is lost to them, they will surely try to gain a hold in Jiyyd. Such cannot be allowed. They must be sought out and rooted from the face of this earth.
