The Journal of Ono Ryuken

  • Master Toshin's last act before I left the monastary was to formally adopt me into his family. I am still learning to be Ono Ryuken as opposed to just Ryuken. It is a great honor for one abondoned at the monastary door.

I have arrived by boat at a village. The locals call it Norwick. Unfortunately, it was night when I got here. Everything is closed, and no one is to be seen on the roads.

The ship's master had nothing to say to me, and did not seem concerned with my lack of knowledge.

I met some tall folk, humans I believe, but the light was bad. They advised against going out in the dark alone. I would find this to be sound advice later.

At dawn, we left to patrol the woods. They were very kind in pointing out places to be careful of.

Unfortunately, that seems to include all of the local goblin tribes. Master Toshin would be saddened by the conditions here. The goblins attack on sight. I never had a chance to find out why.

That there is a conflict between the village and the tribes, no one doubts, but no one I have met seems to know why. It will be a great test of my training to try to mediate this, but Tyr never promised an easy life, and honor demands that I try to end the conflict.

  • I have learned several things recently.

First moving to a new land exposes you to its sickness. I had a cold for two days. It kept me confined to the Inn, but one of the barmaids took care of me, and the soup was rather good.

I have found a hole in my learning. Having lived so long at the monastary, I find that I have trouble remembering the names of people that I meet.

The human I met the other day, Brendell, I think his name is, has continued to show me around and improve my knowledge of the area.

More importantly, there is a place called Silver Valley that is mostly Hin and Gnomes. Unfortunately, by the time I got there, escorted by Brendell, it was late in the evening, and no one was about except the local militia. I was left to explore it, and will eventually get a chance to talk to some of the folk there.

The goblins continue to weigh on my mind. They are hostile on sight and will not even parlay. They just attack immediately. It reminds me too much of father's parting comments about fighting as a last resort.
