A Hin woman, little older than a girl, slinks away from the monastary gates, tears streaming down her face. Behind her in the night, a discontented yowl is heard from what looks like a bread basket, causing her to flinch and run into the rainy gloom.

"Master Toshin, I do not understand. Are not law and justice synonomous?"

The old halfling looked at his student in silence, causing the youngster to fidget.

"Tell me, young Ryuken, is it just to kill a man for stealing from you?"

The disciple's prompt answer was full of the surety of youth. "If the law allows it, how can it be unjust?"

A small smile crept across the master's face, gone almost before it was seen. "What if he is stealing because he is desparate to feed his starving family?"

The cockily opened mouth shut on a pat answer, and Toshin's only student thought for a moment. "Master, are you saying that the law is not always right?"

Toshin sighed, then spoke. "The law is made by mortals, Ryu. They are as fallible as me or you. Justice speaks more from ethics. It is doing what is right. Sometimes, that agrees with the law, but not always."

The student sat, deep in thought, and did not realize that his mentor had left him to it. Later, he would meditate on Tyr's teachings with new insights.

Ono Ryukin stood in his cell in the monastary. No, that was not right, it was no longer his. His thoughts broke with the disconcerting thought that his… father had told him to go out into the world to learn of life.

"Ryu, I have given you all that you can yet hold. To learn now, you need experience. You cannot gain that here.

Go, find those that need help and give it. Teach those you can. Defend those that are worthy of your defense, and fight them that cannot be turned aisde from violence, but it should be your last choice."

Meager possessions packed, Ryuken left with the dawn, a passage booked to some place called Norwick. His formal adoption by his master played in his mind, but the new things he would see and do were foremost in his thoughts.
