From the ashes

character name: Butchenroch AnaurielHearing, smelling, tasting, feeling, seeing; Ulutiu granted me these tools. Oddly, it was not until I left the unbearable climates of the High Ice had I come in need of them. Because without talents or tools a merchant in the trade routes of Anauroch is begging to be robbed, beaten, and mercilessly slaughtered.
I began a poor merchant, with only a cart and useless trinkets. From these trinkets I grew wealth, and from my days as a wretched miser I learned to be honorable and to relate with people. My legend grew and gold flowed more freely than water into my life. I was ready to retire my life as a merchant and find other fortunes such as a wife and children. For this, I traveled the oasis’s. I was a proud, young and wealthy bachelor: the perfect husband. Therefore it was not long before I was wed to a beautiful spouse. However, to look even above her beauty, her father was the captain of a Zhentarim garrison – perhaps my days of social commerce were not at an end.
I strongly resisted the man’s attempts but eventually fell through. I would take up the dangers of a traveling merchant. He assured me safety under guard of some of his finest men. And it was this greed that brought my great misfortune.
I could hear the crackling of flames with the horrid screams of intense agony. I could smell the rancid scent of death. I could taste the blood dripping from my forehead. I could feel the broken bones and gashes of separated skin that decorated my body. I could see a masterwork painting of a cruel and merciless artist. My legend was gone. The guards were nowhere in site. Had they died? Had their horses or their own cowardice taken over? Had I been betrayed? And not ten feet away lay my wife…what was left of my wife. What was left of my life?
Never have I lost more. The thieves, scoundrels and murders took most of what I cared about, but they did not take my faith. And my faith is what binds me to these senses that I felt so strongly this day. Therefore my tools will grow and my talents will be better, so that I shall never be wronged again.
